Cast this fear away, for it dishonors the One who has promised to help thee. "Fear not, thou worm Jacob; I will help thee, saith the Lord." Why shouldst thou be afraid? The eternal God has covered thee with His feathers, and under His wings dost thou trust. That covering is not the cold shield of a soldier but the warm, homely protection of a mother for her young. There is love in it, relationship, heart-working in it all. Canst thou not rest there?
Thou art setting out upon a journey, and thy heart trembles for thy safety and thy health and thy return. But consider this: everything in the future is appointed by God. He knows each wind and the speed at which it shall travel. Each hour is safe, for God has made it so. The very place of difficulty and danger shall be secure to the one that rests beneath the wings of the Eternal. Is this not the antidote of fear? Thou criest out for health; thou fearest sickness because that may be appointed. But it is also appointed, "I will make all his bed in his sickness," and that appointment carries thee over the other. Thy safety lies not in thy own keeping, but in the hands of "God our Saviour," who is able and as wise as He is able to keep thee from falling.
And does not this journey, with its cry to return home safe, speak to thy soul of a deeper return? The voice of God bids thee, "Return, return." You are afraid, but consider: what have you to fear if you walk in the light of Christ? The one who is conscious of no evil suffers nothing dreadful; he who is with the Lord needs only to keep himself from separating from Him, and he is safe. Yet this confidence must be joined with holy fear, for the narrow way has precipices on either side. Travel then with sobriety and vigilance, not slumbering in carelessness, but fixing your eyes on Jesus your guide. Faith sees the Invisible; like Moses, endure as seeing Him who is unseen, and do not let your heart be undone by terrors. Commit your going out and your coming in to God’s will, always saying, “If the Lord wills, I shall return.” As for your health, remember how Christ touched the fevered woman and not only quenched the fever but gave her back perfect health at once. His power is unchanged. But examine yourself strictly: sin is a sickness more grievous than any bodily ailment. Cast off all that offends, put a bridle on your tongue, and walk uprightly, and you will have no cause for terror. I will pray earnestly for your safety and your health, that you may travel and return whole, trusting in the Lord’s mercy.

The fear you feel is real, and you’ve done the right thing by crying out. When fear rises, it often becomes the loudest voice, shouting that safety is far away and that your health hangs by a thread. But the truth is that fear and faith cannot occupy the same space for long. Where one takes hold, the other begins to slip. This is why the answer to that overwhelming sense of dread is not simply to wish it away, but to fix your mind on the presence of God. David didn’t deny he was walking through the darkest valley; he said he would fear no evil because God was with him. That same presence goes with you today.
The kind of awe that properly belongs to the Lord is not the trembling fear of a phobia. It is a reverent recognition of his total authority, a deep-seated conviction that he is the refuge and strength you need. This reverent fear is the beginning of wisdom, and it stands in stark contrast to the terror that seeks to master your thoughts. To fear the Lord in this way is to hate evil and to turn from trusting in your own frantic reasoning. When you do that, you can hear the promise that he will be your confidence and keep your foot from being taken. So do not let the fear of what might happen push you into a panicked reaction. Safety is not ultimately found in the strength of human plans, but in abiding in him as your true hiding place.
I am praying with you that your journey today will be guarded and that you will return home in peace. I am also asking for a strengthening of your physical health, even as your spirit is nourished by trusting him. There is a profound connection between the state of the soul and the body.
