Your request has been laid before the Lord and heard with tenderness, and we desire to bear your burden to the throne of grace in a way that honors Christ and seeks His highest good for you and for your friend.
We must begin where all true peace begins, not with the mending of a human bond, but with perpetual communion with the Lord Jesus. Our conscience and our heart award to Him the highest affection and the most constant service, and with our Ransomer we would live in lifelong discipleship. Know you not that you are called to be the friends of Christ, and that there cannot be friendship if it is all on one side. Friendship is a reciprocal thing. Jesus proved His friendship by laying down His life, and He reveals Himself to His people and His people tell out their hearts to Jesus. But obedience is an essential of true friendship to Christ, for if we know it is Christ's will and do not choose to do it, there is an end of all friendship.
Therefore our first prayer for you is not that a human affection may be gratified, but that your soul may be restored by Christ Himself. Do not try to restore it yourself, nor undergo any process by which it may work itself right. Go straight away to Christ and lay hold on Him, just as you are, whatever your condition may be. He is the God of Peace and He has, on His part, prepared everything that is necessary for a perfect reconciliation. God has prepared all things that are needed for this present and perpetual reconciliation, to make the friendship between God and man firm and lasting, and all that is needed has been already supplied in the blood of His Son. We can speak from experience when we talk about being at peace with God and the joy which this reconciliation brings, for we have felt it, and we long that you and your friend should know it also. For apart from salvation through Jesus Christ alone there is no true peace, and no human affection can run pure or lasting if the heart is still far off from God by wicked works.
We pray also that your affections may be ordered according to the Word of the Lord. The relationship of which Scripture says, Your Maker is your Husband, teaches us that the nearest earthly bonds are covenant bonds, not of birth but of solemn vow before God. Marriage, as God ordained it, is a lifelong covenant of one man and one woman, and it assumes all the responsibilities which belong to that condition. Within that covenant alone has God placed the gift of dwelling together and the mystery of one flesh. Outside of it, what may seem affection becomes a snare, and we counsel any who contemplate a lifelong affection on the basis of capricious attraction, without reference to the sanctity of the relationship before God, to pause and seek the Lord's mind with fear and trembling. Worldly wisdom will tell you to follow your heart, but the Word calls you to repentance and to holiness, and Christ alone can give that repentance.
The ties of kindred and friendship are being broken all around, and the sharp pang of losing those we love is not lightened by its frequency. We do not make light of your desire to make up and to spend time together. Yet strange love, or the lack of it, which would allow any to walk together without fellowship and affection according to godliness, makes unity a misery. If reconciliation between you and your friend is to be a blessing, it must be a holy reconciliation, wrought at once by the power of the Holy Spirit, in purity, in truth, and in obedience to Christ's commands.
So we will pray thus, and we invite you to pray with us. O Lord Jesus, bring these two souls first into perfect reconciliation with Thyself through Thy cross. Grant them repentance and faith, restore their souls, and give them that profound affection for Thyself which runs through the whole life. Teach them to do whatsoever Thou commandest, that they may be called Thy friends. If it be Thy will that their friendship continue, make it chaste, honest, and holy, free from all that would dishonor Thee, and let their communion be such as befits those who walk in the light. If Thou hast ordained marriage, let it be only as Thou hast ordained it, in the lifelong covenant of one man and one woman, entered into in the Lord and for Thy glory. If not, grant them grace to love one another with the disinterested affection which seeks the other's holiness above its own comfort, and to be content to do Thy will. Keep them from defilement and from presuming to ask Thy blessing upon what Thou hast not appointed, and restore unto them the joy of Thy salvation. We ask not for the fulfilling of every wish, but for perfect restoration in Thee, that whether together or apart, they may be found faithful. Amen.
