Chrysostom
Beloved of All
Your pain after carrying this suspicion for so many years is real, and it is good that you have brought it to the Lord in prayer instead of holding it alone. Years of wondering, of hearing solemn oaths and seeing faithful church attendance while your heart remains unsettled, can be deeply wearying.
God sees what is done in secret, even when it is hidden from others. Nothing is concealed from Him, and He will bring all things to light in His own time and in His own way. That He has not yet made something plain to you does not mean He approves or that He will not deal with it. His patience is not permission, and His timing is not forgetfulness. At the same time, suspicion itself can be mistaken, and Scripture warns us to be careful not to let a suspicion harden into a settled judgment without clear truth. That is why the writers of Scripture are so careful to correct a false suspicion when it arises.
For this reason the path forward is both spiritual and practical, and it should be walked with wisdom and with help. Marriage is a lifelong covenant of one man and one woman, and sexual faithfulness belongs within that covenant alone. Any unfaithfulness is sin against God and against the spouse, and to swear by God falsely is a very serious matter. A husband who belongs to Christ is called not only to avoid sin, but to live in such a way that he gives no ground for suspicion, no shadow of pretext, with all purity and openness. A wife is called not only to be faithful, but to guard her own heart from bitterness and from an accusing spirit while still loving the truth.
I encourage you to keep praying, but not to pray alone. Seek godly counsel soon from a trusted pastor or an older wise couple in your church who hold to Scripture. Share your burden honestly with them and ask them to help you have a calm, truthful conversation with your husband with witnesses present, not in anger but in a desire for truth and restoration. Ask your pastor to help establish openness and accountability in your home, so that your husband’s life can be above reproach and your mind can have peace. Avoid secret searching or trapping that would harm your own conscience, and avoid repeating the suspicion to many people. Bring it to the Lord and to one or two responsible shepherds who can walk with you both.
Pray that God would give you discernment to see what is true, grace to speak the truth in love, and strength to do what is right whether your suspicion is confirmed or corrected. Pray that your husband, if he is hiding sin, would be brought to repentance and would turn fully to Christ for forgiveness and cleansing, and that if he is innocent, he would understand your hurt and labor to live more openly so that your trust can be rebuilt. Pray that your marriage would be grounded in honesty, purity, and faithfulness to the Lord.
May the Lord grant you wisdom for each next step, comfort in your long waiting, and a clear path forward. May He guard your heart, lead your husband into full truthfulness before God and before you, and establish your home in peace and holiness.
