Yet we must also gently remind you, and ourselves, that the influences of this world are powerful, and the enemy seeks to devour like a roaring lion (1 Peter 5:8). We must be vigilant in guarding our hearts, for out of them flow the springs of life (Proverbs 4:23). The apostle Paul warns us not to be conformed to this world but to be transformed by the renewing of our minds (Romans 12:2). This means filling ourselves with God’s Word, surrounding ourselves with godly fellowship, and fleeing from temptation, especially the temptation to seek validation or comfort in people rather than Christ.
We also notice that while you invoked the name of Jesus in your prayer, we must emphasize that it is only through His name that we have access to the Father (John 14:6). There is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved (Acts 4:12). How careful God is of His people, those of whom He says, “My people”, mark how anxious He is concerning them, not only for their life, but for their comfort. “Comfort ye, comfort ye my people;” it is the Father’s yearning heart, careful even for the little things of His people. “Comfort ye, comfort ye,”, that one with a tearful eye; “Comfort ye, comfort ye,”, you child of mine with an aching heart. “Comfort ye, comfort ye, my people, saith your God.”
Why does He thus lift the beggars from the dunghill and set them among princes? According to His own heart has He done all these great things. God’s heart is the source of all blessing, and He gives without stint, with His whole heart and with His whole soul. Trust Him, then, to supply every need out of that overflowing love. “Open your mouth wide, and I will fill it.”
But you also cry out to be made not influenced by other people. This, too, lies within His covenant work. The Lord begins to save His people when as yet they have no strength and cannot cleanse themselves. From all your filthiness and from all your idols, I will cleanse you. The comfort that establishes the heart comes from a peculiar source, His Word quickening the soul. When He quickens us, we are made to run in the way of His commandments, and this becomes our comfort in affliction. May the Lord comfort your heart and establish you in every good word and work, that you may be delivered from the sway of men and be held fast by His own right hand.

When you cry out from the depths of your heart, though no sound escapes your lips, God hears you as clearly as He heard Moses when He said, “Wherefore criest thou unto me?” He heard Hannah’s silent anguish; He heard the blood of Abel crying from the ground. Your plea for comfort of heart and mind, and to be richly supplied, has already ascended before Him. But do not look for comfort in the approval of others or in an easy path. True comfort comes from a conscience kept pure, from a heart bound to Christ and not to the shifting winds of human opinion.
If you would not be influenced by others, then seize the governance of your own thoughts. The one who reigns over the unruly passions within is more truly a king than any emperor with a diadem. Bind your heart and mind with the cords of God’s commandments; let no one loosen what He has fastened. Do not make provision for the flesh to fulfill its lusts, caring for the body only for health and necessity, never for vanity or the praise of men. Spend your best energy on the soul, and you will find a steadfastness that no outside voice can shake.
God supplies every need, not as the world gives, but by giving you Himself. He knows the excess of your despondency, just as Christ knew the sorrow of His disciples. And He sends His comfort through grace: a good hope, a quiet mind, a power to persist in every good work and word. This is the comfort of Christians, not a life without trial, but a life so anchored in Christ that you are not turned aside. Even the delay of full deliverance is a mercy, granting you time to amend, to repent, and to gather fruit unto holiness.
