We hear the heaviness in your heart and we join with you in bringing your marriage before the Lord, for we know that marriage is holy and precious in His sight. What therefore God has joined together, let no man separate, Mark 10:9, and we believe that marriage is a lifelong covenant between a man and a woman designed to reflect Christ's love for His people. We understand how weary you feel when your home is filled with cursing and complaining instead of peace, and we do not take lightly the pain of feeling alone in prayer for your wife.
The Word shows us that corrupt speech and continual complaining grieve the Holy Spirit and wound a marriage. It is written, Let no corrupt speech proceed out of your mouth, but only what is good for building others up as the need may be, that it may give grace to those who hear, Eph 4:29, and Do all things without complaining and arguing, Phil 2:14. A mouth that curses and complains does not build up but tears down, and we gently rebuke that pattern in your wife's life because it is not pleasing to God. We also see that pride and unthankfulness are dangerous to the soul. Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall, Prov 16:18, and God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble, James 4:6. When God in His mercy answers prayer, His purpose is to draw us into greater humility and thankfulness, not pride or bossiness. In everything give thanks, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus toward you, 1 Thess 5:18. A thankful heart honors God, while a proud and complaining spirit dishonors Him and brings strife into the home.
We also want to encourage you in your role as a husband. We know you are tired, but we urge you not to grow bitter or to return harsh words for harsh words. Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the assembly, and gave himself up for it, Eph 5:25, and Husbands, love your wives, and don't be bitter against them, Col 3:19. We are called to love as Christ loves, with patience and forgiveness, even when we are not loved in return. Let us not be weary in doing good, for we will reap in due season, if we don't give up, Gal 6:9. Your faithful prayers for your wife are seen by God and they matter greatly, even when she does not yet pray for you. We pray that she will learn to respect and honor you as her husband, for the Word says let the wife see that she respects her husband, Eph 5:33, and that you both will dwell together with understanding and honor, 1 Pet 3:7.
We notice that you spoke of God but did not mention the name of Jesus, and we want to lovingly remind you that it is only through Jesus that we have access to the Father. Jesus said to him, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me, John 14:6, and There is salvation in none other, for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, by which we must be saved, Acts 4:12. If we confess with our mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in our heart that God raised him from the dead, we will be saved, Rom 10:9. It is by the name of Jesus that our prayers are heard and our marriages can be healed, so we come to God only through Him.
We pray together for you and for your wife now. Father in heaven, we come before You in the name of Jesus Christ, asking for Your mercy and healing upon this marriage. Lord, we ask You to soften our sister's heart, to convict her where there has been cursing, complaining, pride and unthankfulness, and to replace it with a gentle and quiet spirit that is precious in Your sight. Teach her to give thanks in everything and to walk in humility, remembering that every good answer to prayer comes from Your grace. Give her a desire to pray for her husband and to speak words that build him up. Father, strengthen our brother who is weary. Fill him with Your love, patience and wisdom, help him to love his wife as Christ loves the church, not with bitterness but with grace and forgiveness. Restore peace to their home, help them to pray together and to seek You together, and let their marriage honor You and be a testimony of Your redeeming power. We ask this in the name of Jesus, our only hope and Savior, amen.
