Your tongue is too quick to call evil what God, in His inscrutable wisdom, has permitted for your training. Is the college itself wicked, or do you speak from the bitterness of a wounded pride? A nurse learns to tend broken bodies; have you forgotten that the soul must first be healed of its own fevers, its rash judgments and panicked demands? You beg in the name of Jesus for swift escape, yet the Lord often delays outward deliverance precisely to work an inward one. Remember the Syrophoenician woman: He met her urgent need first with silence, then with a word sharper than a sword, calling her a dog, yet her persistent faith won the crumb she sought. Are you willing to wait upon His timing, even if the answer tarries past your ten days?

Christ Jesus redeemed us from the curse of the Law by becoming a curse for us, hanging on a tree. If you are in Him, no failing score, no academic stumbling block, can place you back under a curse. Why then do you speak as one forsaken? Your true life is hidden with Christ in God, and when He appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory. An exam cannot threaten that life. But you treat this exit test as though your very existence depended on it, and so you have surrendered the peace that is your inheritance. The disciples once cried, “Whence should we have so many loaves in a wilderness?” forgetting the very hands that had already multiplied bread. Do not now look at the smallness of your own knowledge and the largeness of the task and despair. He who fed five thousand with a boy’s lunch knows your need and can grant you calm recall and clarity of mind, if it serves your salvation.

Set your heart on better things. Use these remaining days diligently; pour over your books as a servant of the sick, asking God for remembrance rather than resenting the place He has stationed you. Do not flee the program as if it were Sodom unless it forces you to deny Christ or violate His commandments. A nurse’s hands can be the hands of mercy, and perhaps the very hardship of this trial is meant to strip you of self-reliance so that you will lean upon grace alone. If you pass, give thanks with trembling. If you fail, believe that a door has been shut for a season so that a truer door may open. In either case, your life remains hid in the pierced side of the Savior, where no curse can reach and no earthly disappointment can destroy. So stop calling evil what you cannot see clearly, and entrust yourself to the One who is able to keep you from stumbling.
