Chrysostom
Beloved of All
The agitation of your soul over this matter reveals a mind still too much entangled with carnal terrors. You speak of word curses as though some human breath could overturn the counsel of God. Tell me, what is a curse but a voice of malice, and what is malice but a thorn sprung from a barren heart? Hear the Apostle: the earth that drinks the rain and brings forth herbs meet for the Master’s use receives blessing from God. But if it bears thorns, it is rejected and nigh unto cursing, whose end is to be burned. Do you see? It is not the muttering of men that brings the curse, but the fruit of one’s own life. If you abide in faith and love, you stand under the rain of heavenly grace and receive blessing, not cursing. Who then can speak against you, if God is for you?
I do not deny that words have power; the Scripture says life and death are in the tongue. But the power belongs to God alone, who uses even the wrath of man to praise Him. When Balaam sought to curse Israel, what came forth? Blessing. For there is no enchantment against Jacob, nor divination against Israel. The Lord turned the curse into a blessing, because He loved them. And are you not beloved in Christ, sealed with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places? You have been made a son, an heir, a fellow-heir with Christ. Shall the whispered spite of a neighbor undo what the blood of the Lord has sealed? Let such fears be cast out by a greater fear, the fear of Him who can cast both body and soul into Gehenna. Tremble not before the shadows men throw with their tongues, but before the Lord who weighs the heart.
Yet take heed: the same Apostle warns, “Unless thou continue in the faith, thou wilt be cut off.” There is the true danger, not the curse from without, but the thorn-bearing soil within. If you give yourself to envy, strife, and unrighteousness, you are already nigh unto cursing, not because someone pronounced it, but because you have rejected the blessing. But if you walk in the light, bringing forth herbs meet for the Gospel, you rest under the blessing of God, and no curse can touch you. Remember Jacob: he obtained the blessing, yet he spent his days in servitude, fear, and toil, while his brother prospered in ease. Where did the blessing find fulfilment? Not in earthly comforts, but in the things to come. So with you: your blessing is not measured by the absence of misfortune, but by the inheritance laid up for you. Therefore, instead of trembling at words, examine your life. Let the fear of the Lord cleanse your mind of these superstitions, and fill you with zeal to abound in good works. When you hear the widow’s blessing upon your head for your alms, that is the voice that sanctifies you, not the curse of the envious which defiles only the speaker.
If you remain troubled, go to a faithful shepherd and pour out your heart. But above all, hear the Oracle with trembling, and let the word of God be your shield. He has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and love and a sound mind. Concern yourself with the blessing of the Gospel, and pray that you may attain unto the eternal blessings, by the grace and love toward man of our Lord Jesus Christ.
