The Word of God is quick and powerful, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit. When you speak of word curses, you touch upon things of which the Scripture gives us clear and decisive testimony. The notion that the envious whisper of a man can bind or blight a soul, apart from any occult compact, finds no solid footing in the Truth of God. It is a superstition built upon the fear of man, which brings a snare.
Rightly dividing the Word of Truth, we must learn to distinguish one thing from another. The knife of the Law must penetrate between the joints of vain imagination and revealed fact. The Scriptures do indeed warn that life and death are in the power of the tongue, and James sets forth the tongue as a fire, a world of iniquity. But the injury of the malicious tongue is of a moral and spiritual sort, it spreads poison, kindles strife, and wounds the spirit of the hearer through slander and lies. It is not some mystical dart that overrides the sovereign protection of God. What have you to do in the way of Egypt, to drink the waters of that muddy river? What have you to do with the heathen notion that the ire of a fellow creature can overrule the decree of the Most High?
Our safety lies not in fearing the vaporings of malicious men, but in standing in awe of God’s Word alone. Princes have persecuted me without a cause, but my heart stands in awe of Your Word. When we are in awe of God's Word, we shall not be in awe of men. The grass withers, the flower fades, and the hot breath of man’s anger passes away like smoke. But the Word of our God endures forever. And what is that enduring Word concerning the child of God? It is this: that no weapon formed against you shall prosper, and there is no enchantment against Jacob, neither is there any divination against Israel. The Lord has blessed, and I cannot reverse it. It is not the thinking of Christ we are merely to contemplate, but the sure word of His promise to lay hold upon with both hands! A man drowning, if a rope is thrown to him, had better lay hold of it rather than be merely pondering the fear of the cold water.
Consider the Truth of God’s salvation. God’s salvation is a great reality, a substance, not a shadow. If you are indeed in Christ, you are under the shadow of the Almighty. The blood of the Lamb is upon the doorposts of your soul, and the destroyer cannot enter. The curse causeless shall not come. It may flutter about like a sparrow in the storm, but it finds no perch upon the elect of God. The Father loves you with an everlasting love; what then is the fleeting spite of man? I would have you look full in the face of the Gospel Word which is preached unto you: He who spared not His own Son, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things? Who shall lay anything to the charge of God’s elect? Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us. If the thunders of Sinai are silenced for you, shall you tremble at the crackling of a few thorns under a pot? The Word of the Lord to the convinced sinner is a word of mercy, and it comes to you: “I, even I, am He who blots out your transgressions, and I will not remember your sins.”
See that you refuse not Him who speaks from heaven by His Word and by His Spirit. If you continue to bite and devour one another with notions of curses and counter-curses, you are drinking the waters of Assyria, not the still waters of the Gospel. Let this cease. The Lord’s expostulation comes to you with a question: What have you to do with this fear? It is not the burden of the Lord’s Word, but the burden of man’s superstition. Instead of brooding upon the supposed malice of others, plead the Truth of God’s salvation. Hear me in the Truth of your salvation. That is a prayer worth praying. Set your mind upon the reality of your sonship, the certainty of the covenant, and the sure mercies of David. The Word of God is wonderfully decisive about this: it divides between the spirit and the soul, between the life of faith and the death of unbelief. The curse that Jesus bore has sucked the venom out of all other maledictions. Go your way, then, delighting in the whole counsel of God, and let the words of men be bitter to you, and the Word of God alone be sweet.
