We have heard your cry of weariness, and the Lord Himself marks the frame that He has made and knows how readily it tires. Physically and emotionally exhausted, you are just the one whom the Saviour invites, for He says, Come unto Me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
There is a perfect peace which God keeps for those whose mind is stayed upon Him, because they trust in Him. It is not a peace that depends upon outward ease, but a peace within, whispered by the blood of Jesus. Even when thronging duties press and sorrows surge around, to do the will of Jesus is rest, and to trust His keeping is to find that you and all your concerns are safe in His hands. May that peace, which passeth all understanding, keep your heart and mind through Christ Jesus. It is a peace which God the Father gives, which Jesus Christ bought with His own blood, and which the Holy Spirit works in the soul, and therefore it is calm and profound as the bosom of God Himself.
And concerning sleep, we are told in the Scriptures, So He giveth His beloved sleep. This is not only the sleep of the body, but the sleep of contentment and of security which the Lord bestows upon His own. The world tosses and frets, unsatisfied and afraid, but the beloved of the Lord may lie down in quietness, for a quiet conscience through the atoning blood makes the pillow soft, and the everlasting arms make the resting place secure. Tired nature's sweet restorer is itself a gift from your Father's hand, and He who watches over you neither slumbers nor sleeps, that you may sleep under His watchful eye.
Let us pray with you and for you.
O gracious Father, Thou seest this weary one, spent in body and cast down in spirit. Surround Thy child with Thy manifest presence, and let Thy peace, even perfect peace, settle upon the heart that now trusts in Thee. Forgive all sin through the blood of Thy dear Son, and speak peace within. Grant this night, we beseech Thee, peaceful and restorative sleep, the sleep of Thy beloved, that the body may be renewed and the mind quieted. Lay Thy hand upon the throbbing brain and the tired limbs, and command refreshing rest. And in the morning, give strength sufficient for the day, that with renewed power this dear one may rise to do Thy will with cheerfulness and to find rest therein. Keep this soul abiding in Christ Jesus, in whose name we ask it, Amen.
