We can begin to think that if God is truly pleased with us, the door will swing wide open, and if it closes, it must be proof of some hidden failure. It is a line of reasoning as old as the book of Job. When catastrophe fell upon him, his friends sat down and spoke with absolute certainty that his suffering was the direct result of his own sin. They were convinced that a clean life always leads to a comfortable life. But they were wrong, because they did not know what was happening behind the scenes, where God was bragging on His servant’s integrity even when Satan challenged it.
Your worth before God is not measured by the outcome of an interview or the status of a job. You are not a mercenary who is only serving God for the benefits He provides. Your true security rests in the fact that you are held by a Mediator who stands between you and God, laying His hand on both. Jesus Christ is the answer to our deepest cry for a bridge across the gap, and His evaluation of you is the only one that carries any eternal weight.
That does not mean the waiting is easy. Job’s grief was heavier than the sand of the sea, and the silence of heaven during a time of need can feel unbearable. His friends, though they meant to help, were miserable comforters because they tried to explain what they did not understand, and they misrepresented God by presenting Him as fair in a simple, transactional sense. We must be careful not to do the same. Try not to listen to the inner voice, or even the voices of other believers, that suggests this job is a reward for being good or that losing it is a punishment for being bad. That is a false evaluation of your life.
There is a hope that runs deeper than the immediate result. The Scriptures speak of a tree that is cut down, yet at the scent of water it will bud and bring forth new life. Even if this particular opportunity dries up like a dead branch, there is a future growth God has prepared that you cannot see right now. When God finally spoke to Job, He did not explain the controversy in heaven; He simply revealed Himself. In the same way, your peace will not come from understanding every step, but from acquainting yourself with the God who is already at peace with you. You have asked for this job, and that is a natural request, but lean now into the unshakable truth that your life is not hanging on this one answer.
