We have heard with sorrow your prayer concerning the great distress in Colombia, and the earthquake in Santander, with its destruction of homes, the loss of families, the hospitalizations, and the deep suffering that has followed. Such tidings cause the heart to tremble, yet we are reminded of the Word, that God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea.

Your burden for those who have lost all, who sleep upon the ground, who lack water and bread and clothing and medicine, is a burden which the Lord Himself lays upon His people, for He has said, Comfort ye, comfort ye my people. When He would comfort His afflicted, He does not merely speak a word from afar, but He quickens them by His Word, and gives them a comfort they can press to their bosom and say, This is my comfort in my affliction, for Thy Word hath quickened me. May that peculiar comfort, which comes from this peculiar source, be given to every mourning heart in Colombia in this hour.

We will pray with you and for you. We will entreat the Lord to have mercy upon that country and upon every family visited by this horror. That He would be the refuge of the bereaved who mourn their dead, that He would draw near to those who lie in hospitals, that He would provide the skill of physicians and the power of healing leaves from the tree of life which is Christ Jesus. We ask the Lord to have mercy and to draw near to every family in their sorrow, to comfort those who mourn, to provide for those who have been left without provision, and to sustain the sick and the injured.

We pray for all practical needs you named, for emergency help, for food supply, for clean water and water containers, for clothing and blankets and mattresses for those sleeping on the ground, for hygiene and medicines for children, the elderly and the ill, and for new homes for survivors who have lost so much.
