Silas
Beloved of All
Thank you for sharing so honestly about what you are going through. Hearing that you have lost your job, your family, and feel trapped in addiction is heartbreaking, and wanting your life back is an honest and good desire. God sees where you are and He hears you when you cry out to Him.
The Bible talks about a curse in a deeper way than we often think. When Adam sinned, God pronounced a curse that affected man, woman, and the earth itself, bringing hard labor, pain, thorns and thistles. The law then shows us that curse more clearly. It says cursed is everyone who does not continue to do everything written in the law. James reminds us that to break the law at even one point makes us guilty of all. That means all of us stand under that curse, condemned to death, and no one can keep the law perfectly on his own.
That is why what Jesus did is such good news. He became a curse for us. It is written, cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree, and Jesus hung on the cross to bear the curse that was ours. The crown of thorns placed on His brow was a fitting sign of this, because thorns came as part of the curse on the earth, and He wore them to show He was carrying the curse of God against sin for you and for me. He who was rich became poor for our sakes, so that through His poverty we might receive the riches of God, the forgiveness of sins and the promise of the Holy Spirit through faith. He has redeemed us from the curse of the law so that the blessing promised to Abraham might come to us through faith in Jesus Christ.
There is another truth that speaks directly to your fear about someone putting a curse on you. In the Scriptures a king tried to hire Balaam to curse the people of God, much like people today try to hire someone to bring harm on an enemy through spells or enchantments. Balaam sought the Lord and God told him plainly, you shall not curse the people, for they are blessed. The king kept trying from different places, but the answer was the same. God is not a man that He should lie, nor does He change His mind like a man. The prophet had to confess that there is no sorcery or divination that can prevail against those whom God has blessed. No hex or curse spoken by another person has greater power than the blessing and protection of God over those who belong to Him through Jesus.
This does not mean that choices have no consequences, and it does not mean that spiritual opposition is not real. But it does mean that your hope is not in trying to find a stronger counter curse or a different spiritual power. Your hope is in turning fully to Jesus Christ alone for salvation. Santa Muerte and any power associated with it is not a true source of life or protection, and Scripture calls us to turn away from all such things and to trust only in Jesus, who alone bore the curse and alone can break the power of sin and death.
If you have not already, come to Him in simple faith. Confess your sin to God, including your addiction, and ask Him to forgive you through what Jesus did on the cross. Ask Him to be your Lord and to make you His own. God has set before us a blessing and a curse, blessing when we walk in obedience to Him through faith, and curse when we walk away. In the new covenant we are blessed not by keeping the law perfectly ourselves, but by trusting in Christ who kept it and bore the curse for us.
From that place of faith, take practical steps toward freedom. Addiction is powerful and you should not try to face it alone. Seek help from a pastor or mature believers who can walk with you, and seek qualified help for substance abuse, such as a biblical counselor and medical support where needed. Cut off access to drugs, be honest about your struggles with someone you trust, spend time daily in Scripture and prayer, and ask God to restore what has been broken as you learn to walk with Him one day at a time. It may take time to see work and family relationships heal, but God is able to bring restoration as you continue to follow Him.
I will pray for you now.
Father, I lift up this dear one who feels cursed and overwhelmed, who has lost so much and is bound by addiction. Thank You that Jesus became a curse for us on the tree, wearing the crown of thorns to bear the curse of sin and the earth. I ask that You would show Your power and mercy today. Forgive sin through the blood of Jesus, break the hold of addiction, and set this heart free from fear of any curse spoken by others. For there is no curse that can stand against those You have blessed, and You are faithful and do not lie. Fill this life with Your Holy Spirit, give strength to turn from all false ways and to trust only in Jesus, provide wise help and community for the days ahead, and begin the work of restoring life, work, and family according to Your will. In the name of Jesus, amen.
