Need affordable housing

Please, I need prayer to get into ### housing rent geared to income. I've been waiting almost ###. My current landlord is a nightmare. During the flood on ###. We had approximately 6-7" of water in our downstairs hallway and laundry room. I'm a tenant who rents in the basement. Landlord refuses to remove the rug which I am concerned will end up with mold. There's a strong mold smell.This is not the only issue. I've had with this landlord. He's also refused to properly address other issues. I've had to call fire prevention office and get an appointment for them to come look at another issue. ### ...### and ### ( landlords) at my door screaming at me. Cause I dared to take down the disgusting dirty blinds down. I asked about cleaning the junk out from behind the radiator. They started screaming that I was damaging it. If you knock it over your going to be charged. They then start verbally abusing me, threatening to call police. Telling me you should move out. They said they don't have to do anything cause we're on ###, we're desperate for a place to live. We should just be thankful to have a roof over our heads, it's better than living in a tent. The landlord feels that people on ### don't deserves a decent place to live. They feel that our poverty and desperation for an apartment relinquishes them from having to do any necessary repairs or treat us with any kind of dignity or basic courtesy or respect

The conditions you describe are not only unsafe but deeply unjust, and we stand with you in prayer, asking God to intervene on your behalf. The Bible tells us in Psalm 34:18-19, "The Lord is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit. Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivers him out of them all." You are not forgotten, and God sees every injustice you have endured.

First, we must address the immediate dangers in your living situation. Mold is a serious health hazard, and your landlord’s refusal to address it is negligent and sinful. Scripture commands landlords, indeed, all people, to treat others with fairness and compassion. Leviticus 19:13 says, "You shall not oppress your neighbor, nor rob him. The wages of a hired servant shall not remain with you all night until the morning." While this verse speaks to wages, the principle extends to providing safe housing. A landlord who exploits the vulnerable and ignores basic safety violates God’s command to love our neighbors as ourselves (Mark 12:31).

We rebuke the spirit of greed and callousness that has taken root in your landlord’s heart. Their words and actions reveal a heart hardened by pride and contempt for the poor, which God detests. Proverbs 14:31 warns, "He who oppresses the poor shows contempt for his Maker, but he who is kind to the needy honors God." We pray that the Lord would soften their heart, convict them of their sin, and lead them to repentance. If they refuse, we ask that God remove their authority over you and bring justice swiftly.

Regarding your housing application, we pray for divine favor and acceleration. Psalm 37:25 says, "I have been young, and now am old, yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his children begging for bread." The Lord knows your need, and we ask Him to open the door to safe, affordable housing without further delay. We declare that the waiting period is over in Jesus’ name, and that the right housing opportunity will come to you at the perfect time.

We also encourage you to seek legal recourse if necessary. Proverbs 31:8-9 instructs us, "Open your mouth for the mute, for the rights of all who are destitute. Open your mouth, judge righteously, and serve justice to the poor and needy." Many communities have tenant rights organizations or legal aid services that can help you navigate this situation. Do not let fear or intimidation silence you, God is your defender.

Now, we lift you up in prayer:

Heavenly Father, we come before You on behalf of Your precious child, who is enduring hardship and injustice in their housing situation. Lord, You are the God who sees, the God who hears, and the God who acts on behalf of the oppressed. We ask You to intervene in this situation and bring swift resolution. Open the door to safe, affordable housing, and close the door on this toxic living environment. Protect them from further harm, both physically and emotionally.

Father, we rebuke the spirit of greed and oppression that has taken hold of their landlord. Soften their heart, Lord, and lead them to repentance. If they refuse to change, we ask that You remove their authority over Your child and bring justice according to Your will. Provide wisdom and courage to seek legal help if needed, and surround them with godly counsel and support.

Lord, we also pray for healing from the emotional toll this has taken. Restore their sense of dignity and worth, reminding them that they are fearfully and wonderfully made in Your image (Psalm 139:14). Fill them with Your peace that surpasses all understanding (Philippians 4:7), and let them feel Your presence in this difficult time.

We ask all these things in the mighty name of Jesus, the One who came to set the captives free and bind up the brokenhearted. May Your will be done in this situation, and may Your name be glorified. Amen.

In addition to prayer, we encourage you to reach out to local churches or Christian organizations that may offer assistance with housing or legal advocacy. While we continue to pray for that income-geared apartment to open, we want to encourage a couple of things that might help you feel less stuck in the meantime. The fire prevention office is already involved with one issue, which is good, keep that appointment and let them see the conditions. For the mold concern specifically, document what you can with photos and a written log of dates and requests made. Many communities have a municipal property standards or by-law office, or a legal aid clinic that helps tenants know their rights when a landlord refuses essential maintenance; reaching out to one of them could give you a clearer path forward. That step can feel daunting, but you already had the courage to take down unsanitary blinds and stand there while they screamed, your resolve is stronger than the fear they are counting on.

Sometimes the most significant thing that shifts in a crisis is not the whole problem at once, but the environment around you. Even a small change, an official inspection, a properly filed complaint, an advocate who listens, can make your days more bearable and move the housing list closer to the top. We are standing with you in that hope.

Lord Jesus, you see our friend in that damp basement, weary from waiting and belittling. We ask you to swing open a door to safe, affordable housing without further delay. Protect them from retaliation; give them favor with inspectors and housing workers; and let their current landlord’s neglect be brought to light. In the middle of the stress, sustain their health and their spirit. In your name we pray, Amen.

The frame of your trial is all too clear, and the cruelty you describe stings with the contempt that the proud heap upon the poor. Yet hear this: there is a Landlord who holds the freehold of every habitation, and He does not despise the tenant who cries to Him from a basement flooded with sorrow. That earthly landlord may feel free to neglect repairs and trample dignity, reasoning that desperation strips you of rights. But the Most High takes His own title seriously; He is the defender of the oppressed, and He has written a different clause into the leasehold of your life.

You are not forgotten. You are not merely a nuisance to be silenced. When the floodwaters rose and the mold began its stealthy, corrupting work, it was a picture of a deeper need, the decay that sin works in the heart of man. That mold, left untended, sickens the body; how much more does the corruption within require a thorough cleansing?

You have urgent need of healing, indeed, and it is not only for four walls and a dry floor. The screaming voices at your door, the threats, the taunt that you should simply be grateful for a roof, these are the world’s cruel logic. But Christ, the Friend of sinners and publicans, is never noisy or cruel. He does not barge in with abuses; He enters with the quiet authority of One who has every right to take possession of what He redeemed.

He was poor, remember. He knew the indignity of not having a place to lay His head. He is the very friend you need, tested in the points of your suffering. You have waited long for this housing, and the waiting itself feels like a slow erosion of hope.

Yet consider the nature of a waiting people. They do not wait in despair, counting the days until the ceiling gives way. They wait upon God, as a servant attends a master, quick to perceive what should be done. The waiting itself may be the furnace where your faith is refined, where the world’s threats grow small and the Lord’s sufficiency looms large.

To wait upon Him is not passive stagnation; it is the intake of a mysterious strength, an expectancy that He will act. The enemy whispers that your case is too old, too messy, too urgent for divine intervention. But the judge tarries, even now, not wanting to execute swift penalty, but giving space for His grace to be manifest. Do not let circumstances persuade you that you are beyond hope.

The very waiting of heaven proves a desire to show mercy. You have great need, therefore test Him as often as need arises. Bring the damp rug, the threats, the long years of waiting, and spread them all before the throne with a boldness that will not be silenced. Let your prayer rise: “I am resolved that I will not give it up until You rain Your righteousness, Your provision, Your deliverance upon me.” The Lord knows what it is to dwell in a house of dust.

Draw near to Him now, and He will draw near to you. He will, in His time, either change the landlord’s heart or provide the door that opens to a place of safety. Keep your house in order before the Great Landlord, and trust that He who feeds the birds and clothes the grass will not forget the urgent need laid before Him this very hour.

I hear of your affliction, and my heart is moved. You cry out for a dwelling, and you wait, while the man to whom you pay rent treats you with contempt, as though your poverty made you less than human. He thinks that because you receive assistance, you should be grateful even for a flood-soaked floor and the stench of mold. This is a grievous wrong, and God is not blind to it.

But consider: did not the Apostle Paul rejoice in his chains? He counted it glory to suffer for righteousness. I do not say your landlord’s abuse is the same as Paul’s imprisonment for the Gospel, yet when you endure injustice patiently, without returning evil for evil, you share in the suffering of Christ. The poor man, if he have nothing, is bold; he fears no confiscation. The rich man is bound by his possessions, but you are free in your poverty. Your landlord may scream and threaten, but what can he truly take from you? Your soul is beyond his reach.

Remember how John the Baptist stood before Herod and said, “It is not lawful for thee to have thy brother’s wife.” He was in chains, yet he spoke truth to power. You, too, have called the fire prevention office to address a danger. That was not an act of rebellion but of prudence for your safety. Let no one despise you for your need; Christ Himself had nowhere to lay His head. He chose poverty, and His apostles went forth without silver or gold. Your waiting for housing is a trial, but it is also a school of patience. Will you let it teach you to long more for the eternal dwelling, where there is no mold, no flood, no shouting landlords?

Yet I do not say to be passive in the face of harm. Seek what remedies the law provides, but do so without hatred. Pray for those who despitefully use you. The kingdom of heaven is taken by violence, not against others, but against your own passions. Seize it by enduring, by forgiving, by keeping your conscience pure. Let not the filth of resentment clog your soul, even as you deal with the filth of that rug.

And you are not alone. The Lord sees every tear, and He will make all things right. In the meantime, let this trial be to you as Paul’s chain, a spectacle of faith to those around you. When you are delivered, whether into that new housing or into the heavenly rest, you will give thanks not only for the relief but for the strength you gained. Hold fast, and let your light shine even in that basement, that your landlord may see your good conduct and glorify God, though he reviles you now. The time is short; eternity is long. Wait on the Lord, and He will lift you up.
