It is a great mercy when the people of God are stirred to pray after this manner, pouring out their hearts for rulers and for nations, and laying hold of the promise that all men should be saved and come to the knowledge of the truth. Such prayer ascends like incense before the throne, and He who sits in the heavens does whatever He pleases. Yet let us be clear on this point: the holy oratory of the pulpit and the polished speech of the council chamber are nothing if they are but the Judas spirit, putting Christ up for pieces of silver while the heart pursues gain or fame. Woe to that man who makes a bargain of godliness; he is a son of perdition. True prayer for authority must spring from the fear of the Lord, which alone is strong confidence and a place of refuge for His children.
You plead for leaders to be saved, to possess wisdom and humility, to foster godly alliances, and to champion liberty for the Gospelβs advance. Yes, pray that they may not merely lean upon Christ as a stone leans upon a foundation, but that they may know a living union with Him, as the branch draws life from the Vine. For if Christβs life does not lay hold of a man, if he is not emptied of all pretensions of his own, then all his governance is but a dwelling-place built of alabaster and gold which the Eternal will not inhabit. The Lord looks to him who is of a contrite spirit and who trembles at His word. He that strips himself of self-admiration shall long for the robe of righteousness which Christ provides, and there alone is salvation.
Consider the test of prayer itself. It is easy to cry out in public, βLord, help our rulers,β but will you always call upon God? Public prayer is no evidence of piety, it is practiced by an abundance of hypocrites, but private prayer is a thing for which the hypocrite has no heart. Examine whether your intercession for the President, the SCOTUS justices, the generals, and the pastors is the pulse of a living soul or only the imitation of a spiritual action. The man who never wrestles alone in his closet may well be one of those who will not always call upon God. All our times of national anxiety ought to be times of private prayer; every funeral knell of liberty should ring us to our knees.
And as you pray for peace and the diminishment of evil, remember that the first result of true prayer is often battle, storm, and earthquake upon the earth. The trumpet sounds, and the warriors of the Cross must gird on their swords. Yet the fruit of this Tree of Life is for the healing of the nations. Plead for that healing, but do not think the doctrine of Godβs fixity of events makes prayer void. The supremacy of the Almightyβs will is the very ground on which we urge our plea, for He works all things after the counsel of His own will, and He bids us ask that His face may shine upon the sanctuary. Let the request be importunate: βWill You not revive us again, that Your people may rejoice in You?β
For the nations cannot know the shining of Godβs countenance except through a living Church. A lifeless Church is a dishonor to God, and the better a Church has been, the more of a nuisance it becomes when His presence is gone. So pray for the pastors, the spiritual leaders, with holy jealousy, that their faith fail not. For if faith is destroyed, all the graces cease. And what is the great protection of our faith? Our Saviorβs intercession. βI have prayed for you,β He says. He shows His wounds and pleads the merit of His sacrifice, and this is the preservative that shields the whole person of the poor attacked one. You ask for angelic protection and for the thwarting of the wicked. Look higher: the intercession of Christ covers the entire person of His people.
Therefore, bring this prayer for national leaders, for the beautiful land, for the peace of Godβs people worldwide, and for the salvation of the worst. Lay it at the feet of Him who is greater than he that is in the world. And when you have done, let your own soul take up the cry, βLord, help me,β for that is the prayer for everybody, the prayer that suits the sick, the dying, the burdened heart, and it opens the gates of heaven. The God of peace will be with you, and the peace that guards the heart and mind will keep you, through Christ Jesus.
