Chrysostom
Beloved of All
You have lifted up a good and right prayer, for we are commanded to offer petitions, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings for all people, for rulers and for all in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and dignity. This is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. So do well to pray for the President, for governors, for all who bear the office of the sword, not because we endorse every deed, but because their institution is ordained of God for the tranquility of our life together. They beat off enemies, they restrain sedition, they put an end to differences. Look not to the one who makes ill use of the thing, but to the good order of the institution itself, and you will see the wisdom of Him who established it.
Yet understand that the peace for which we pray is not merely the peace of this world. Christ Himself said, “Peace I leave with you, My peace I give unto you; not as the world gives do I give unto you.” There is an external peace that is often mischievous and unprofitable, but the peace of Christ makes us stronger, for it reconciles us to God and to one another in truth. Remember, agreement is not in every case a good thing, even robbers agree together. Therefore when we ask for peace, we ask first for that peace which is the mother of all good things, the peace that comes when the diseased is cut off and the mutinous removed, so that heaven may be united to earth. We must pray that God will thwart the plans of the wicked, for their evil harmony is worse than any war. True peace is founded on righteousness, and its makers are called the sons of God.
You have asked for wisdom for leaders. But what is true wisdom? The wisdom of this world, which seems so lofty, is foolishness with God. We speak wisdom among the perfect, and the perfect are those who believe, yet a wisdom not of this world, but God’s wisdom in a mystery, the word of the Cross. Since the world through its wisdom knew not God, it pleased God through the foolishness of preaching to save those who believe. The Gospel, the method of salvation by the Cross, is the wisdom and power of God. So the wisdom we must desire for all in authority is first this: that they may come to the knowledge of the truth, that they may believe and be saved. For this is the great lovingkindness of God, that He takes away the sin of the world. Do not delay to proclaim it; let all hear that there is One who delivers without our labor, and let none put off receiving the Gift.
You have also sought protection and guidance. Put on the whole armor of God: gird your loins with truth, put on the breastplate of righteousness, shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace. Above all, take the shield of faith, to quench all the fiery darts of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. And remember, each believer has an angel; therefore we pray for the Angel of peace. Be sober, as though in the presence of tutors, for a demon is present also. Yet greater is He that is in you than he that is in the world.
Continue in these prayers with thanksgiving. Let your requests be made known to God, and the peace of God which surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. For He who sits in the heavens does whatever He pleases; the king’s heart is in the hand of the Lord like channels of water. He works all things after the counsel of His will, and for those who love God and are called according to His purpose, all things work together for good. So pray without ceasing, and in everything give thanks, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.
As you pray for the beautiful land and its people, and for the furtherance of the Gospel to every nation, forget not that the harvest is plentiful but the laborers are few. Pray that the Lord of the harvest send forth laborers. Let the word of the Lord run swiftly and be glorified, that all may come to repentance and the knowledge of the truth. And let your own life be a witness, living peaceably with all men as much as lies in you, making peace, for the peacemakers shall be called sons of God. Let the peace of God rule in your hearts, and be thankful. Amen.
