My son needs prayer

Disciple of Prayer
Please pray for my son ###. He had severe mental illness that is not responding to medication and he is not able to function.

We are deeply moved by your heartfelt plea for your son, and we stand with you in fervent prayer before the throne of grace. Mental illness is a heavy burden, not just for those who suffer from it, but for the loved ones who walk alongside them. We recognize the pain, fear, and helplessness you must be feeling, and we want you to know that you are not alone. The Lord sees your tears, hears your cries, and holds your son in the palm of His hand.

First, we must address the foundation of our faith and the source of our hope. It is only through the name of Jesus Christ that we have access to the Father, and it is only by His blood that we are saved. Jesus said in John 14:6, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me." There is no other name under heaven by which we can be saved (Acts 4:12). If your son does not yet know Jesus as his Lord and Savior, we pray that the Holy Spirit would draw him near, soften his heart, and reveal the love of Christ to him. Salvation is the greatest healing any of us can receive, and it is the starting point for all true restoration.

We also lift up your son’s mental health to the Great Physician, who is able to do immeasurably more than we can ask or imagine (Ephesians 3:20). The Bible tells us in Psalm 34:18-19, "Yahweh is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit. Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but Yahweh delivers him out of them all." Even when medication fails, when doctors are at a loss, and when hope seems dim, God is still on His throne. He is not limited by human understanding or the failures of modern medicine. We serve a God who heals, who restores, and who makes all things new (Revelation 21:5).

We rebuke the spirit of despair and hopelessness that may be trying to take root in your son’s mind and in your own heart. The enemy would love nothing more than to convince you that this battle is already lost, but we declare that this is not the end of your son’s story. The Word of God says in 2 Corinthians 10:4-5, "For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but mighty before God to the throwing down of strongholds, throwing down imaginations and every high thing that is exalted against the knowledge of God, and bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ." We take authority over every lie, every attack, and every stronghold that is afflicting your son’s mind, and we command it to break in the mighty name of Jesus!

We also pray for wisdom and discernment for you as his mother. The Bible tells us in James 1:5, "But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him." You need God’s guidance to know how to best support your son, whether that means seeking alternative treatments, finding the right doctors, or simply being a steady presence of love and faith in his life. We pray that the Lord would give you supernatural strength and peace as you navigate this difficult season.

Let us pray together now:

Heavenly Father, we come before You with heavy hearts, lifting up to Your throne of grace. Lord, You see his suffering, and You know the depths of his struggle. We ask that You would move in his life in a powerful and mighty way. Break every chain of mental illness, every stronghold of despair, and every lie of the enemy that tells him he is beyond hope. We declare that by the stripes of Jesus, he is healed (Isaiah 53:5), and we speak life, peace, and restoration over his mind.

Father, we pray for breakthrough in his treatment. If there are doctors, therapies, or interventions that can help him, we ask that You would lead him to them. Give wisdom to his caregivers and open doors that no man can shut. But above all, Lord, we pray for Your healing touch. You are the God who restores, who makes all things new, and who turns mourning into dancing (Psalm 30:11). We trust You to do what only You can do.

We also pray for ’s faith. If he does not yet know You as his Savior, we ask that You would draw him to Yourself. Soften his heart, open his eyes, and let him experience the love of Christ in a tangible way. For those of us who know You, Lord, strengthen our faith. Help us to trust You even when we don’t see the answers we long for. Remind us that You are good, that You are sovereign, and that Your plans for us are plans for peace and not for harm (Jeremiah 29:11).

Finally, Lord, we pray for ’s mother. Give her strength, peace, and wisdom as she walks this journey with her son. Surround her with a community of believers who will support her, pray for her, and lift her up. Let her feel Your presence in a real and powerful way, and remind her that she is not alone.

We ask all of this in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, the name above every name, the name by which we are saved and healed. Amen.

We encourage you to hold fast to the promises of God, even when the road is long and the nights are dark. The Lord is your ever-present help in trouble (Psalm 46:1), and He will never leave you nor forsake you (Hebrews 13:5). Keep standing on His Word, keep praying without ceasing, and keep trusting in His faithfulness. Your son’s story is not over, and God is still writing the final chapter. May He grant you peace that surpasses all understanding as you wait on Him.

We are holding you and your son close in our own hearts today. Navigating a severe mental illness that isn't responding to medication is an exhausting, bewildering road to walk, and we're so sorry for the weight you’re both carrying. The ache of watching your child suffer while feeling powerless to help is one of the deepest pains a parent can know, and we don’t want to rush past that.

You mentioned he isn’t able to function, and that reality is heavy, for him, and for you as you stand alongside him. It can feel so isolating, as if you’re both trapped in a long, dark hallway with no door at the end. While prayer is our greatest anchor, we also know God often works through practical channels. Sometimes when medications aren't helping, a fresh set of eyes can uncover a new path. If you haven't already, a thorough re-evaluation with a psychiatrist who can carefully look at his diagnosis, his full history, and the specific medications he's tried might open a door that feels sealed shut right now. Even a consultation at a different clinic or with a specialist can illuminate options a steady, familiar doctor hasn't yet considered. That's not a failure of faith; it's one way the body of Christ comes alongside the suffering.

And you, you mentioned him first, but we see you standing there too. Caring for a loved one with severe mental illness can hollow a person out. We pray you have some quiet space to breathe today, and someone you trust you can be completely honest with about how this is affecting your own spirit.

Jesus, into your strong and gentle hands we lift this beloved son. Though the medication has not brought relief, we ask you to guide his loved ones and his doctors toward whatever will help, the right treatment, the right environment, the right word of encouragement that can break through. Hold his mind and his identity safe in your care, secure from despair. And for this parent who loves him: wrap them in your peace that doesn't depend on easy answers. Let them feel, even quietly, that they are not alone in this valley. We pray all of this in the name of Jesus, who himself was a man of sorrows and understands every bit of it. Amen.

It is a heavy trial to watch a child in the grip of such darkness, when medicine proves hollow and the mind remains a captive. Yet despair not, for the great Physician has never met a case beyond His skill. He who cast out the legion of devils and restored the demoniac to his right mind still lives, and His arm is not shortened. The malady that baffles human wisdom is but an occasion for the display of divine power. Bring your son often before the throne of grace, and remember that Jesus Christ, the Son of the Most High, delights to bind up the brokenhearted and set at liberty them that are bruised.

You see only the wreckage of a tormented soul, but the Father sees a child for whom His own Son laid down His life. The cross of Christ is the sure remedy for every ill, for there the bitterest cup of human suffering was drained to its dregs. The same Love that spared not the Son of His bosom will not withhold any good thing from those who cry unto Him. Your son may be unable now to pray for himself, but your faith may yet bring him, like the palsied man, dropped through the roof at the feet of Jesus. Do not think Him unwilling; He who kissed the prodigal before he could finish his confession is ready to welcome the most distracted and defiled.

It may be that this deep affliction is the Shepherd’s voice calling you to a closer walk with Him, and the means by which He will draw your son to the cross. The darkness must be felt before the Light of the world is prized. When all creature comforts fail, when the cisterns are broken, then the soul learns to look to the Fountain. Lay hold of this promise: that He was sent to proclaim release to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind. No case is too complicated, no chain too strong, for Him who conquered death and hell. Trust Him with your son; the carpenter’s Son is mighty to save.

I will join my prayers with yours, that the God of all grace would command light to shine out of this present darkness, and that His peace, which passeth all understanding, would garrison the mind of your beloved child. The love of the Father runs over to us because we are one with Jesus; bring your son to that union by faith, and you shall yet see him clothed and in his right mind, sitting at the feet of Him who is the Resurrection and the Life.

May God in Jesus' name answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. God is so in love with you. Be Encouraged!

Psalm 37:4: Delight yourself in the Lord, And He shall give you the desires of your heart.
Matthew 6:33: But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.
