My son needs a job

Anonymous

Beloved of All
Please pray for my adult son who lost his job, car, possibly losing his fiancé, and facing eviction. He has applied for over 50 jobs, with no reply. Please pray that he finds work as soon as possible, and preferably on our side of town as I will be his transportation. The depression is getting to both of us. Thank you!

I prayed for this in Jesus name. amen.

We come before the throne of grace with heavy hearts, lifting up your son and this entire situation to our Heavenly Father. The weight of unemployment, financial strain, and the threat of losing so much at once is crushing, and we grieve with you both in this valley. But we know that even here, God is working, His provision is not delayed, though it may feel that way, and His strength is made perfect in our weakness.

First, we must address the matter of your son’s fiancée. Scripture is clear that marriage is a sacred covenant between one man and one woman, established by God for life (Genesis 2:24, Matthew 19:4-6). If this relationship is not built on Christ as its foundation, or if there has been any sexual immorality (fornication), it will only add to the burden your son carries. We urge you both to examine this carefully, for the Lord desires marriages that honor Him and reflect His love and holiness (Ephesians 5:22-33). If this union is not aligned with God’s design, we pray for wisdom and courage to seek His will above all else. But if it is a godly relationship, we stand with you in praying for its preservation and blessing.

Now, for the pressing need of employment: we declare that the same God who fed Elijah by the brook and provided for the Israelites in the wilderness is your son’s provider (Philippians 4:19). He is not forgotten, and His timing is perfect. We rebuke the spirit of despair and delay in Jesus’ name, this is not a season of lack, but of preparation for something greater. We pray that every door shut by man would be flung open by the Lord, and that a job would come swiftly, one that not only meets his needs but also aligns with his skills and honors God (Proverbs 3:5-6). Father, we ask for favor in interviews, for connections to be made, and for employers to see his worth as You do. Let this trial refine him, not break him, and let his testimony of Your faithfulness shine through this hardship.

We also lift up the practical matter of transportation. Lord, You know the logistical challenges here, and we trust You to make a way where there seems to be none (Isaiah 43:19). If it is Your will, let the job be nearby, or provide another reliable means of transport. We pray for patience and unity between you and your son as you navigate this together, that frustration would not turn to bitterness, but that your bond would be strengthened in Christ.

For the depression weighing on you both: we take authority over the lies of the enemy that whisper "God has abandoned you" or "things will never change." The psalmist cried out, "Why are you cast down, O my soul? Hope in God!" (Psalm 42:5). We pray for the peace that surpasses understanding to guard your hearts and minds (Philippians 4:7), and for the joy of the Lord to be your strength (Nehemiah 8:10). This is not the end of your story, it is a chapter where God is writing redemption, even if the ink is still wet.

And to your son, we say this: You are not defined by your circumstances. You are a child of the King, created with purpose (Jeremiah 29:11), and your identity is found in Christ alone. The enemy wants you to believe you’re forgotten, but Jesus says, "I will never leave you nor forsake you" (Hebrews 13:5). Keep seeking Him, keep applying, and keep trusting. The breakthrough is coming.

We pray all these things in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, the One who calms storms and makes a way in the wilderness. Amen.

Prayer:
Heavenly Father, we come before You with hearts heavy but hopeful, knowing that You see every tear and hear every cry. Lord, we lift up this family to You, asking for Your hand of provision to move mightily on their behalf. Open doors of employment that no man can shut, and let favor surround this young man like a shield. Strengthen their faith when the wait feels long, and remind them that You are working even in the silence. Heal their hearts from despair, and replace it with Your peace. If there are areas in this situation that do not align with Your will, whether in the relationship or in their response to hardship, reveal it to them, and give them the courage to walk in obedience. Provide for their needs abundantly, and let this trial draw them closer to You. We ask all this in the powerful, matchless name of Jesus Christ, the Author and Perfecter of our faith. Amen.

We are holding you both up in prayer, the weight of so many losses in such a short time is crushing, and it’s no wonder the depression is pressing in on you. When door after door stays shut, it’s hard not to feel that everything is slipping away.

A couple of thoughts that might help while you wait. First, job loss can feel like a verdict on his worth, but it’s not. Gently remind your son that his value doesn’t hinge on a paycheck, even as you both keep fighting practically. Second, since eviction is a real and immediate pressure, please reach out to your church or a local community aid group. Many can offer emergency assistance or help you talk with the landlord. Getting that single pressure point addressed, even temporarily, can lighten the emotional load for both of you.

In the meantime, staying connected to your church family, even a brief phone call, and taking a walk together can help push back the isolation that feeds depression. And if the heaviness deepens to the point where it steals sleep, appetite, or the will to keep going, please encourage him (and yourself) to speak with a doctor or a Christian counselor. That isn’t weakness; sometimes our bodies and minds need that kind of help to climb out.

We’re praying now: Father, you see the pile of rejections, the threat of eviction, the strained relationship, and the weariness in their souls. Please open a door to a job, one he can actually get to, and that brings stability. In the waiting, grant them your peace, practical relief for the pressing needs, and a steady hope that you are with them. In Jesus’ name, amen.

How often do we find that our greatest losses in this world are but the Lord’s wise means to win our hearts entirely to Himself. When a soul is brought low, stripped of car, of prospects, of the favor of men, then there is room for the everlasting arms to be felt underneath. You tell me that depression is settling upon you both, but I would remind you that the furnace is the place where faith is refined, not destroyed. The trial is sharp, yet it need not be fatal to your peace if you learn to trace the Father’s hand in it.

Our Lord Jesus Christ, who is the Husband of His church, has assumed all the responsibilities of that near and dear relationship. If you are His, then your son’s crisis is not beyond His tender care. The world clamors that work must be found immediately, that the fiancée must be retained, that the eviction must be averted, but what if the Lord in His wisdom sees that some of these things would be a net to your son’s soul? I do not speak lightly of his suffering, yet I must lift your eyes from the temporal to the eternal. Remember that if a man should gain the wages he desires, the companion he craves, and the roof he needs, and yet miss the great salvation, he has profited nothing and suffered infinite loss. This is the first and great concern: his soul’s standing before God. Let that be settled, and then every other matter is but a light affliction.

I perceive in your request a dread that your son might be unmanned by this chain of sorrows. Take heed that neither of you falls into that subtle sin of taking umbrage against the Lord. A Quaker once said to a mourner, “Friend, I perceive you have not yet forgiven God.” Many a tried believer has entertained hard thoughts of the Almighty because the path has been made rugged. But oh, what a grievous error! Our heavenly Bridegroom cannot err; He loves too wisely to give a stone when bread is needed. If the job seems delayed, the car lost, the fiancée departing, it is not because His hand is shortened, but because He is working a deeper good, perhaps a thorough humiliation, a death to self-reliance, a sharp call to repentance and faith.

I will join my prayers with yours that, if it be His will, employment may speedily open near your home. Yet I must pray with a deeper fervor that this young man may find not merely a wage, but wisdom; not only a deliverance from eviction, but a deliverance from the wrath to come. Tell him that the Saviour who bids him seek first the kingdom of God has never yet forsaken a soul that cast itself wholly upon Him. Let him pursue work with diligence, as unto the Lord, yet let him be equally earnest to lay hold of eternal life. And you, dear parent, bear this burden with a meek and quiet spirit, knowing that the Lord is your Husband, your Maker, and He will not see your seed begging bread, much less will He forget your tears.

Commit your son into the hands of that faithful Bridegroom who shed His own blood for His chosen ones. If his heart is still estranged from Christ, then this storm is a mercy designed to drive him to the Rock. If he knows the Lord, then these losses are but the chipping away of earthly dross that the image of Christ might shine the brighter. In either case, the great business of the soul must reign supreme. Let the prayer rise from both your hearts: “Say unto my soul, I am thy salvation.” Then, come what may in purse or person, you shall find that He does all things well.
