My prayer.

You have poured out your heart accurately, confessing that your intentions are not pure, that sin still stirs within you, and that you fear hell and long for heaven. This self-knowledge is itself a gift, for the proud and the careless never speak so. Christ the Physician does not turn away those who know themselves sick; He came precisely to take away the sin of the world. Only do not delay the treatment.

You ask why you do not crave a relationship with God above all things. The flame of love is often smothered by long habit and the cares of this life. But do not wait for a burning feeling before you act. Faith is not always felt; it is proved by obedience. Cry out for that desire even when your heart feels cold. He who hears the cry “Lord, I believe; help my unbelief” will not despise it. Your prayer surrendering all things into the hands of God is a good beginning, but make it a daily, hourly practice, not a single act. Entrust your circumstances, your relationships, your finances to Him, but know that His perfect will often prunes what is unfruitful before it brings a harvest of peace. That peace is not the world’s absence of trouble, but the soul’s anchor when the surgeon cuts away the disease. And sometimes God’s peace enters by removing what we cling to, for there can be no lasting peace while sin remains unchallenged.

You dread hell and desire heaven. Then do not let “now” slip away. The Apostle cries, “Behold, now is the acceptable time; behold, now is the day of salvation.” While Christ sits on the throne of grace, approach boldly, with your confession, and you will obtain mercy. But if you put off repentance, assuming you can bargain later, you do not know what tomorrow may bring. He who appears now without sin to save will appear again to judge. Do not let the Gift be scorned by delay. You battle the devil within you, yes, the enemy is your own sin. Yet the battle itself proves you are not yet defeated. Stand and fight with fasting, with prayer, with almsgiving, with honest self-examination. Wash the stains by daily repentance, by tears, by works of mercy, for the hope of your salvation rests not only on the lovingkindness of God but also on your own persistence after that grace.

You cannot be at rest if you knowingly entertain what God forbids. Examine every relationship, every hidden thought, every secret habit, and cut off that which offends. That surgical peace is painful but leads to life. When you pray for the world, for those who hurt you, do so not with a sentiment that ignores righteousness but with a heart that wills their true good, their salvation, even while you refuse to share in any unfruitful works of darkness. Let your peace be the portion of a clean conscience, washed in Christ’s blood, and guarded by holy living. Keep moving forward, as you said, not dwelling on past shame except to learn humility, but reaching out for the prize of the upward call. Christ, who became sin for us though He knew no sin, will not desert you in the fight. Only take the medicines of salvation now, while it is called today.

Your prayer lays bare the very struggle every one of us who has been awakened to God’s holiness knows all too well. You see the sin in your heart, the mixed motives, the weakness, and that awareness is no accident. The law of God was given to reveal exactly that, to show us that in ourselves we are incapable of being what God would have us be. Until the commandment came, sin lay dead in our understanding, but when we hear “You shall not covet,” suddenly we recognize the lust and selfishness that were there all along. That is not a reason for despair; it is a mercy designed to bring you to Jesus Christ.

And this is where your prayer has already reached the one place that matters: “Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me a sinner.” That cry is the laying of your hand upon the head of the sacrifice. Every sin offering long ago pictured the guilt being transferred to an innocent substitute, and that substitute was slain so the sinner could go free. All of that pointed forward to the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. His blood was shed, and by it He made peace. The wages of your sin, the just penalty, was taken by Him. So you can have, right now, peace with God. Not a truce you earned but a gift received when you surrender your case entirely into His hands.

You said, “I fear hell, Jesus, I want to enter heaven.” The one who has peace with God through Jesus Christ no longer needs to be held in bondage by the fear of death and what lies beyond it. The sting is gone. Jesus died and rose, and death and Hades will one day give up their dead, but for those who are in Christ, eternal life is already theirs. The gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. That is not wages; it is a free gift, the complete opposite of what we deserve. You can rest in that.

Yet I notice you also long for something more: “I ask for Your peace to fill me… to govern my life and surround me wherever I go.” That is the peace of God, which is deeper than the initial peace with God. Many believers know their sins are forgiven but still live in a turmoil of anxiety and uncertainty. The peace of God comes when your mind is stayed on Him, when you fully trust that your circumstances, your relationships, your past embarrassments, are all in His control. You said, “I am at rest knowing nothing counterfeit… will not come my way.” That is exactly the kind of quiet confidence the Lord gives when we stop trying to manage everything ourselves. Keep your eyes on Him, and His peace, which passes all human understanding, will guard your heart and mind.

You also admitted that you do not crave a relationship with God above everything, and you do not know why. Do not be crushed by that admission. The very fact that you are crying out, wanting His will, asking for His peace, shows that the Spirit is working in you. The sinful nature we all inherited from Adam is still present, and it fights against the new life. That is why you feel like you battle the enemy within. But the promise stands: “He that is dead is freed from sin.” You have been planted together in the likeness of Christ’s death, so that the body of sin might be put out of business. You can say, “It is no more I that do it, but sin that dwells in me.” And then yield yourself, not as a servant of disobedience, but as a servant of righteousness. Each time you choose to obey the voice of Jesus instead of the pull of the flesh, you are living out that newness of life.

Keep sowing in peace. Blessing those who hurt you, putting the past in God’s hands, and seeking His perfect will, that is the wisdom from above. The fear of the Lord that you expressed, that awe of His power and holiness that makes you tremble at the thought of hell, is actually the beginning of wisdom. It is not a phobia but a reverent awe that leads you to hate evil. And the fruit of that wisdom is a life of peace. You are not meant to dwell on negativity or your past failures, because they have been buried with Christ. Move forward, knowing that He who began a good work in you will complete it.

So let me encourage you: you have already laid hold of the only remedy. Keep resting your whole case in His hands. When the old fears arise, remind yourself that the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life. His perfect peace will settle over you as you trust that nothing counterfeit can come your way because He is directing your steps.

Your transparency about the struggle between flesh and spirit has touched us deeply, and we have prayed that the Holy Spirit would convict, comfort, and conform you more fully into the image of Christ.

We continue to stand with you, asking the Father to strengthen your desire for Him until it eclipses every other longing. We have interceded for the peace that surpasses understanding to guard your heart and mind in Christ Jesus, and for the perfect will of God to unfold in every corner of your life—your relationships, finances, circumstances, and future. We have also prayed for your family members, that they too would be drawn into the light of God’s perfect plan.
