My old mother

Your love and concern for your mother is clear, and it is right to bring her and this difficult family situation before the Lord.

We thank God with you for the health you describe in your mother, for her clear mind, her memory both short term and long term, her orientation to time and place, and for freedom from Alzheimer, anxiety, depression and fear. That is a gracious gift, and we pray He will continue to sustain her in that strength and peace.

We also hear the weight you are carrying. You are caring for her with help during the day, and you and your brother share time with her, yet she longs for someone to stay overnight and to live with her. You have a desire for a shared solution where you could live near one another, and you feel sadness and heaviness because your brother does not want that and seems stubborn. It is painful when love for a parent and disagreement within the family pull in different directions.

Scripture speaks directly to that sense of heaviness. Jesus said, come to me all you who labor and are heavy laden and I will give you rest, take my yoke upon you, for my yoke is easy and my burden is light. The prophets once went around speaking of the burden of the Lord as if God were laying a crushing weight on people, and the Lord corrected them, saying He had not laid that heavy burden on them. Much of what feels unbearable is not what God has asked us to carry, but what we take on ourselves, or what others place on us, or the strain of trying to make our own will happen.

Every person carries a burden, a master direction for life. To live trying to please ourselves, to control outcomes, to make others agree with us, is a heavy and restless burden that can never be satisfied. To live to do the will of the Father, as Jesus did, is light by comparison, not because there is no responsibility, but because it is lived in dependence on Him and in trust that He is at work. When you feel pressed down and groaning under the load, it is an invitation to come again to Christ, to lay the care before Him, and to ask what is truly His will for this season, rather than carrying guilt or demands that He has not placed on you.

The Lord also teaches us to bear one another's burdens, and in that way we fulfill the law of Christ. When one member suffers, the whole body feels it, and we are to help carry the load with sensitivity. Yet Scripture also says each person must bear his own responsibility. That means we do not simply dump our burden on everyone else and walk away, and we also do not try to carry everything alone as if no one else has a part. In your family, that balance matters. You can love and support your mother and your brother, and you can also recognize limits, healthy boundaries, and the need for wisdom about what care is sustainable and good for all.

Jesus understood family tension. He said that at times a man's foes will be those of his own household, and He spoke from experience. When His own mother and brothers sought Him, He asked who is my mother and who are my brothers, and then pointed to His disciples and said those who do the will of God are His mother and brothers and sisters. He was not dishonoring His family, but showing that our first allegiance is to the Father, and that we have direct access to Him through Christ alone. That helps when family members disagree. You cannot force your brother's will, and you are not required to bear the whole outcome yourself. You can continue to honor your mother, speak truth in love to your brother, and entrust both to the Lord.

We pray for you, for your mother and for your brother. We ask the Lord to give you rest in Christ as you bring this heavy care to Him, to lift any false burden of guilt or pressure you have taken on, and to show you His light yoke which is to seek His will day by day. We ask for wisdom to discern the best solution for your mother as she lives alone, for provision of trustworthy care, for peace in her heart when she feels lonely at night, and for protection over her mind and emotions. We pray for your brother, that God would soften stubbornness where needed, grant him understanding and compassion, and lead you both to unity where possible and to gracious respect where you differ. We ask that even if you cannot live together in one building, the Lord would provide a practical and loving arrangement that honors your mother, protects your own health and callings, and keeps family love intact.

May the Lord keep you close to Himself, remind you that serving Him is not a crushing weight but a place of satisfaction and rest, and guide your next steps with clarity and peace.
