We are joining you in prayer with deep compassion for you and for your dear mother, and we hear the ache in your heart as you watch her lying in the hospital bed after her stroke. We understand how connected you feel to her, how she has been your support and the engine for those around her, full of energy and always available, and how painful it is now to see her suffering and asking what the purpose of her life is. We want to lift her and you together before our heavenly Father and seek His will in Jesus name.
We want to gently remind you that our prayers and our very access to God come only through Jesus Christ. You have cried out many times to Lord, and that is beautiful, but Scripture teaches us that Jesus is the way to the Father. Jesus said in John 14:6, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. And in Acts 4:12 we read, There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved. It is through confessing our sins and believing in Jesus, that He died for our sins and rose again, that we are forgiven and can come boldly to God in prayer. If you have not already, we encourage you to place your full trust in Jesus Christ for forgiveness and eternal life, and to pray in His name, for in Him we have mercy and grace.
We also hear your cry, forgive me for all of my sins especially against her, and we rejoice that God is merciful to forgive. In 1 John 1:9 it says, If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. We encourage you to confess specifically to God through Jesus what weighs on your conscience, and to trust that He cleanses you. We also encourage you, if there are things you need to say to your mother while you have time with her, to speak words of honor and love to her, for God commands us in Exodus 20:12 to Honor your father and your mother, and He sees and honors the care you have given her.
Your mother is feeling like a burden and questioning her purpose after losing her husband and facing so many health struggles. We want to assure you that in God's eyes her life still has profound purpose and value, even in old age and weakness. In Psalm 71:9 and Psalm 71:18 we hear the prayer of the aged, Dont reject me in my old age. Dont forsake me when my strength fails, and, Even when I am old and gray, God, dont forsake me. In Isaiah 46:4 God says, Even to old age I am he, and even to gray hairs I will carry you. I have made, and I will bear. Yes, I will carry, and will deliver. She is not a burden to God, and her worth is not measured by what she can do but by being His beloved creation. Even now He can use her life as a testimony of His sustaining grace.
We also hear your panic and fear at imagining life without her, and your plea that God not take her yet. It is natural to love deeply and to fear loss, but God does not want you to be overcome by panic. In 2 Timothy 1:7 we read, For God didnt give us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control. And in Philippians 4:6-7, In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus. In 1 Peter 5:7 we are told to cast all our worries on him, because he cares for us. We understand you need her, but ultimately we need the Lord to be our unfailing support, and He promises to be with you whether He chooses to heal her and extend her days or to call her home in His perfect timing. In Psalm 31:15 we pray, My times are in your hand, and we submit her life and your future to His wise and loving will, trusting Romans 8:28 that God works all things together for good for those who love Him.
We are praying together now for your mother according to what you have asked, seeking God's mercy and healing from the top of her head to the tip of her toes.
Father in heaven, we come before You in the name of Jesus Christ and lift up this precious mother to You. You know her by name, You know the stroke she suffered days ago, the injury to her brain and nerves, the early late stage Alzheimer, diabetes, depression, and chronic gastrointestinal issues of the stomach and intestines. We ask for Your healing touch upon her. In Psalm 103:2-3 we praise You who forgives all your sins, who heals all your diseases, and in Jeremiah 30:17 You promise, For I will restore health to you, and I will heal you of your wounds. We ask that You would heal her brain, restore the damaged vessels and nerves, help her to walk again if it is Your will, restore her memory and her orientation to time and space, stabilize her blood sugar, calm her stomach and intestines, and ease her suffering. We ask You to lift the cloud of depression and remove every depressive and suicidal thought, and to heal the brokenhearted as You promise in Psalm 147:3, He heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds. Replace her despair with Your joy and hope, not a fleeting positivity but the deep optimism that comes from knowing You are with her and that her life is held in Your hands. Let her know she is not a burden but deeply loved by You and by her family.
We also pray for everyone in the hospital who cares for her, for doctors, nurses and aides, that You would give them wisdom, skill and compassion, and that they would treat her gently and with great dignity and honor, as a queen, with tenderness and respect. Give them eyes to see her as You see her.
And Lord we lift up her child who is suffering with panic and fear. Have mercy and grant Your peace that surpasses understanding. Forgive all sins as they are confessed through Jesus, wash away guilt, and give comfort in knowing that You are in control of life and death. Help this dear one to continue to honor and love their mother with patient care, to speak life and Scripture over her, to read Your Word to her, and to trust You with both today and tomorrow. In Psalm 34:18 we cling to the promise that Yahweh is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit. Draw near now.
We ask all of this according to Your perfect will, trusting Your mercy and Your timing, and we pray with thanksgiving in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior, who alone is our hope and our healer. Amen.
We encourage you to stay close to the Lord through prayer and reading His Word, to share your fears with a trusted pastor or Christian counselor and with other believers who can support you, and to let the medical team know about any depressive or suicidal statements so she can receive the best care. Keep honoring your mother with your presence, gentle words, and touch, and keep entrusting both her life and your own into the hands of our gracious God who carries us even to old age.
