We join with you in lifting your precious mother before our Heavenly Father and we thank you for honoring her in this difficult season, for this is pleasing to the Lord.

We understand the heaviness you carry as you watch her lie in the hospital after a stroke, unable to walk, confused about needing the toilet, asking again and again, while also battling memory loss, disorientation, diabetes, depression and gastrointestinal distress. It is painful to see a parent so vulnerable and we pray for grace for you as you care for her, remembering the commandment that we honor our father and mother, as it says in Exodus 20:12, and the promise that God will sustain those who are weak, for Psalm 41:3 tells us Yahweh will sustain him on his sickbed, and you restore all of his bed in his sickness.

We pray for her body and mind. We ask the Lord who is our healer to touch her brain after this stroke, to restore what has been damaged, to bring clarity where there is confusion, and peace where there is distress about urinating and defecating. We pray that she will be comforted and will be able to understand and accept the help of the diapers and the care provided, without fear or agitation, and that her bodily functions will work gently and without pain or blockage or distress. We pray for her diabetes and her stomach and intestines to be calmed and regulated, and for the heaviness of depression to be lifted, for Psalm 147:3 says He heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds. We also lift her memory and her orientation in time and space before the Lord. While Alzheimer’s has dimmed so much, we know that with God all things are possible as Jesus said in Matthew 19:26, and we ask for mercy and for as much return of memory and awareness as is within His perfect will, and above all for her to know she is safe, loved and not alone.

We pray too for her daily provision, that the Lord would move the hearts of the doctors, nurses and aides to treat her with tender dignity and respect, as a beloved daughter of the King, and to provide the very best meals for her condition, for her diabetes and digestion, and also for her preferences so that she may be nourished and comforted. We pray for wisdom for the medical team and for kindness in every interaction, that she would feel cherished and cared for.

We pray for you, that God will renew your strength as you watch and wait and answer the same questions with patience. Isaiah 41:10 reminds us not to be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness. And Isaiah 46:4 gives us comfort in old age, Even to old age I am he, and even to gray hairs will I carry you. I have made, and I will bear. Yes, I will carry, and will deliver. We encourage you to continue to speak to her gently, to reassure her calmly each time she asks about the toilet, to hold her hand and remind her she is clean and cared for, and to work closely with the nurses about her diet and comfort. Cast your cares on Him in prayer, for Philippians 4:6-7 tells us In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

And now we pray together.

Father in heaven, in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord we come before Your throne of grace and we lift this dear mother to You. You know her by name, You formed her, You have carried her all her days and You see her now in her hospital bed. Lord, we ask for Your healing hand upon her. Touch her brain, heal the vessels injured by the stroke, restore strength where there is weakness, and calm her confusion. Grant her peace about her bodily needs, let her bowels and bladder function without pain or distress, and let her rest in the care that is given without fear or repeated anxiety. Give her clarity of mind as You will, return to her memory and understanding of where she is and what is happening, and if full return is not Your will for now, cover her with Your perfect peace that surpasses understanding. Heal her from depression, comfort her heart, regulate her blood sugar and heal her gastrointestinal suffering. Provide for her the right food at the right time, prepared with care, suitable for her body and pleasing to her. Move every caregiver to treat her with gentleness, honor and dignity, as a queen in Your kingdom, precious in Your sight. Strengthen and encourage her child who watches over her, give patience, endurance, and rest, and let Your presence be felt in that hospital room day and night. We thank You that nothing is impossible for You and we trust Your perfect will and Your unfailing love. We ask all this in the mighty and merciful name of Jesus Christ, our only hope and our access to the Father, amen.

We hear how heavy this is to watch your mother in the hospital after a stroke, wanting to get up to the toilet and asking again and again, while she needs to stay in bed for safety.

With a stroke and Alzheimer's together, that confusion and loss of orientation is so common and so distressing. It is not stubbornness on her part, it is the illness making it hard for her to understand where she is and what her body needs right now. It makes sense you would long for her to feel calm and clear, and to be cared for with real dignity.

We are praying with you for her comfort, for peace when she feels the urge to get up, and for wisdom for the nurses and aides caring for her. One thing that has helped other families in this situation is to gently talk with her bedside nurse about a simple plan you can all use together, like how often they can offer the bedpan, what short reassuring words to repeat each time, and who to ask about meals that fit both her diabetes and stomach issues and also what she likes when possible. You know her preferences best, and the staff often welcomes that input.

Please remember you are carrying a lot too. If you can, let another family member, friend, or chaplain sit with her for a little while so you can rest and eat.

Father, we lift this dear mother to You in Jesus' name. Give her peace, keep her safe from falls, ease her confusion and distress around toileting, and surround her with kind, attentive care. Provide the nourishment she needs and comfort her mind and body. Give her family strength, rest, and clear guidance from her care team. Amen.

Your tender and watchful care for your mother in this season of deep affliction has been heard, and we carry both you and her upon our hearts before the mercy seat.

What a trial it is to see one so dear laid low by stroke, unable to walk, compassed about with infirmity, and clouded in mind and memory. We very speedily care for bodily diseases, for they are too painful to let us slumber in silence, and how much more when they press upon a beloved mother. Yet we turn to that great Physician whose least things are full of healing virtue. It is written that the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations, and not only the fruit but the very leaves, the little things about Christ, are healing. There is an abundance of healing power in Jesus Christ and His salvation to change the life blood and make the nature other than it was before. Calvary is the place for the healing balm, and when Jesus healed the sick of the palsy He said, Son, be of good cheer, your sins are forgiven you, so that pardon and healing were one in His hand.

We pray earnestly for your mother. We ask the Lord that He would graciously relieve her distress concerning bodily needs, that He would spare her confusion and give her, as far as it may please Him, a calm understanding of her condition, and grant her rest in her bed. We ask that He would put tenderness into the hands of those who care for her, nurses and attendants, that she may be handled with gentleness and dignity and honour as one dearly loved. We pray for her body, weakened by stroke and diabetes and troubled in the stomach and bowels, that the Lord who took the fevered one by the hand and lifted her up would lay His healing hand upon her. We pray for her mind, so tried by the decay of memory and the wandering of time and place, and by the heaviness of depression. The Lord can restore what is broken and can give light even when the understanding fails, and we beseech Him to grant her, if it be His holy will, a return of remembrance and quietness of spirit.

We pray also for her daily bread, that the Lord would provide meals suitable to her condition and needful for her health, and that every provision made for her may be for her good. We ask that she may know herself not forsaken, but compassed about with love, and above all that she may know the presence of the Sun of Righteousness risen upon her with healing in His wings. His salvation will perfectly heal both soul and body in His own time, and till then His grace infuses healing virtue which will work health and cure till we shall be without spot or wrinkle.

May the Lord sustain you also who watch and care and intercede with such love. Cast your burden upon Him who cares for you, and trust Him who is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, yet always according to His perfect wisdom and mercy.

We commend your mother to Him who heals the broken in heart and binds up their wounds, praying that He would visit her with pardon and healing through our Lord Jesus Christ, in whose name we ask it. Amen.
