We join with you in lifting your precious mother before our Heavenly Father and we thank you for honoring her in this difficult season, for this is pleasing to the Lord.
We understand the heaviness you carry as you watch her lie in the hospital after a stroke, unable to walk, confused about needing the toilet, asking again and again, while also battling memory loss, disorientation, diabetes, depression and gastrointestinal distress. It is painful to see a parent so vulnerable and we pray for grace for you as you care for her, remembering the commandment that we honor our father and mother, as it says in Exodus 20:12, and the promise that God will sustain those who are weak, for Psalm 41:3 tells us Yahweh will sustain him on his sickbed, and you restore all of his bed in his sickness.
We pray for her body and mind. We ask the Lord who is our healer to touch her brain after this stroke, to restore what has been damaged, to bring clarity where there is confusion, and peace where there is distress about urinating and defecating. We pray that she will be comforted and will be able to understand and accept the help of the diapers and the care provided, without fear or agitation, and that her bodily functions will work gently and without pain or blockage or distress. We pray for her diabetes and her stomach and intestines to be calmed and regulated, and for the heaviness of depression to be lifted, for Psalm 147:3 says He heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds. We also lift her memory and her orientation in time and space before the Lord. While Alzheimer’s has dimmed so much, we know that with God all things are possible as Jesus said in Matthew 19:26, and we ask for mercy and for as much return of memory and awareness as is within His perfect will, and above all for her to know she is safe, loved and not alone.
We pray too for her daily provision, that the Lord would move the hearts of the doctors, nurses and aides to treat her with tender dignity and respect, as a beloved daughter of the King, and to provide the very best meals for her condition, for her diabetes and digestion, and also for her preferences so that she may be nourished and comforted. We pray for wisdom for the medical team and for kindness in every interaction, that she would feel cherished and cared for.
We pray for you, that God will renew your strength as you watch and wait and answer the same questions with patience. Isaiah 41:10 reminds us not to be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness. And Isaiah 46:4 gives us comfort in old age, Even to old age I am he, and even to gray hairs will I carry you. I have made, and I will bear. Yes, I will carry, and will deliver. We encourage you to continue to speak to her gently, to reassure her calmly each time she asks about the toilet, to hold her hand and remind her she is clean and cared for, and to work closely with the nurses about her diet and comfort. Cast your cares on Him in prayer, for Philippians 4:6-7 tells us In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.
And now we pray together.
Father in heaven, in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord we come before Your throne of grace and we lift this dear mother to You. You know her by name, You formed her, You have carried her all her days and You see her now in her hospital bed. Lord, we ask for Your healing hand upon her. Touch her brain, heal the vessels injured by the stroke, restore strength where there is weakness, and calm her confusion. Grant her peace about her bodily needs, let her bowels and bladder function without pain or distress, and let her rest in the care that is given without fear or repeated anxiety. Give her clarity of mind as You will, return to her memory and understanding of where she is and what is happening, and if full return is not Your will for now, cover her with Your perfect peace that surpasses understanding. Heal her from depression, comfort her heart, regulate her blood sugar and heal her gastrointestinal suffering. Provide for her the right food at the right time, prepared with care, suitable for her body and pleasing to her. Move every caregiver to treat her with gentleness, honor and dignity, as a queen in Your kingdom, precious in Your sight. Strengthen and encourage her child who watches over her, give patience, endurance, and rest, and let Your presence be felt in that hospital room day and night. We thank You that nothing is impossible for You and we trust Your perfect will and Your unfailing love. We ask all this in the mighty and merciful name of Jesus Christ, our only hope and our access to the Father, amen.
