We hear your pain and your discernment in this situation and we are standing with you in prayer. We understand how heavy it is when the very people who should bring peace bring confusion and harm, and when an old wound is reopened at the same time. We want to bring this before the Lord together and also share some biblical counsel with you.
We affirm what you have recognized about spiritual warfare. Your adversary, the devil, walks around like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour, 1 Peter 5:8 and our wrestling is not against flesh and blood, but against the principalities, against the powers, against the world's rulers of the darkness of this age, and against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places, Ephesians 6:12. It is right to recognize that Satan can use people and situations to bring confusion, and it is also important to remember that greater is he who is in you than he who is in the world, 1 John 4:4. We do not fight this battle in our own strength, but by submitting to God and resisting the enemy, as James 4:7 says, Be subject therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
We also want to lovingly address the relationship with your ex. You said he is not a Christian and that the relationship was psychologically abusive, and you have now cut off contact. That decision to cut off contact is wise and we encourage you to maintain it firmly. Scripture is very clear, Don't be unequally yoked with unbelievers, for what fellowship do righteousness and iniquity have? Or what fellowship does light have with darkness? 2 Corinthians 6:14. A professing believer should not enter into courtship with an unbeliever. We view being a boyfriend or girlfriend not as casual dating but as courtship with the goal of marriage to another Christian believer, because we believe in the sanctity of marriage as a lifelong commitment between a man and a woman that honors God. Pursuing a relationship outside of that design, even entertaining the idea of dating an unbeliever, opens the door to confusion and harm and gives place to the enemy, Ephesians 4:27. If there was any sexual immorality in that relationship, which is fornication outside of marriage, we encourage you to confess it to God and receive His forgiveness, for we are told to flee sexual immorality, 1 Corinthians 6:18, and that God will forgive and cleanse us when we confess.
Concerning your mother, we hear that multiple people have noticed something spiritually wrong and that you feel the enemy often uses her to harm you. We want to pray for her deliverance and for your protection, while also reminding you of God's command to Honor your father and mother, which is the first commandment with a promise, Ephesians 6:2. Honoring does not mean you must remain in harm's way or receive abuse without boundaries. It means we speak truth in love, we forgive as Christ forgave us, we pray for her, and we seek wisdom for healthy boundaries. Sometimes a person's own unhealed wounds, unrepentant sin, or openness to deception can allow the enemy influence, even while professing faith. We must test the spirits and pray for her eyes to be opened, while guarding our own hearts and minds through Christ, 2 Corinthians 10:5.
We also noticed that your request did not mention the name of Jesus Christ. We gently point this out because we want you to know the full hope we have. Jesus said, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me, John 14:6. And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved, Acts 4:12. It is only through Jesus that we have access to God, that our prayers are heard, and that we have authority over the enemy. If you have not already, we encourage you to place your full trust in Jesus Christ, believing that He died for your sins and rose again, confessing Him as Lord, Romans 10:9. It is in His name that we pray and find healing from the psychological abuse and spiritual attacks you have endured.
We pray together now.
Heavenly Father, we come before You in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, and we lift up our sister to Your throne of grace. Lord, You see her broken heart and confusion, and Your Word says Yahweh is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit, Psalm 34:18. We ask You to draw near to her now and be her refuge and healer. We thank You that she has had the courage to cut off contact with this abusive and unequally yoked relationship, and we ask You to seal that door. We pray that every soul tie, every lie, and every psychological wound from that relationship would be broken in Jesus name, and that You would renew her mind and restore what the enemy has tried to steal. Give her discernment to not answer when confusion calls, and strength to walk in the freedom You have given her.
We also lift up her mother to You. Lord, You know what is spiritually wrong and what influence the enemy has. We pray for her deliverance, for conviction where there is sin, for healing where there is hurt, and for the light of Christ to shine in any darkness. We pray that You would protect our sister from harm and give her wisdom to honor her mother while setting godly boundaries that guard her peace. Help her to forgive as You have forgiven us, and to not give place to bitterness.
Father, we pray that You would fill her with Your Holy Spirit, clothe her with Your armor, and teach her to stand firm against every scheme of the enemy. Lead her to a strong, Bible believing church family and godly counsel where she can be supported and discipled. And we pray that in Your perfect timing, You would bring a godly Christian spouse into her life if it is Your will, a marriage that honors You and reflects Christ's love for the church, rather than another harmful entanglement.
We ask all of this in the saving and powerful name of Jesus Christ, our only hope. Amen.
We encourage you to remain steadfast in cutting off all contact with your ex, blocking communication if needed, and not entertaining conversation that brings confusion. Fill that space with prayer, the Word, worship, and fellowship with mature believers who can walk with you. Continue to pray for your mother, but also seek wise pastoral counsel about boundaries so you can love her without being continually harmed. God will use even this painful season for good as you trust Him, Romans 8:28.
