My mother is severely emotionally and behaviorally disturbed and several people including myself have noticed that there seems to be a demonic element to her negative behavior. She is a professing Christian but believes in some very wrong things. Please pray about this. The enemy often uses her negatively in the lives of people around her. I am concerned her situation may also be the case for others in my life as well. Please pray. Thank you.

We join with you in bringing your mother before the Lord and we carry this burden with you in prayer, for we know how painful and confusing it is when someone you love and honor is severely troubled in her emotions and behavior and seems to be influenced in ways that are not of God.
Scripture tells us we must see this situation with spiritual discernment. We are told in Ephesians 6:12 that our wrestling is not against flesh and blood, but against the principalities, against the powers, against the world's rulers of the darkness of this age, and against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places. We also know the enemy is real and seeks to steal and destroy, for your adversary, the devil, walks around like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour in 1 Peter 5:8. At the same time we are not to attribute everything only to a demonic cause without also recognizing the power of the flesh, unrepented sin, and believing what is false. You have wisely observed that she professes to be a Christian yet believes some very wrong things, and this is something we must lovingly rebuke. We are warned in 1 John 4:1 to not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world. Jesus said in Matthew 15:9 they worship me in vain, teaching as doctrine rules made by men. When a professing believer holds to false teaching and lives in persistent negative behavior that harms others, that teaching must be corrected by the Word of God, for all Scripture is profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for instruction in righteousness in 2 Timothy 3:16. We also rebuke the work of the enemy in her life and in your family, and we stand on the promise in James 4:7 to be subject therefore to God, resist the devil, and he will flee from you, and we put on the whole armor of God, that we may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil in Ephesians 6:11.
We encourage you to continue to honor your mother as we are commanded in Exodus 20:12, yet honoring does not mean accepting false belief or allowing destructive behavior to continue without boundaries. We encourage you to speak the truth in love in Ephesians 4:15, to not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind in Romans 12:2, and to seek help from mature, Bible believing pastors and counselors who can walk with you and with her toward truth and soundness of mind. God did not give us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control in 2 Timothy 1:7, and Jesus promised you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free in John 8:32. We also pray for your discernment concerning others in your life where you sense a similar influence, that the Lord would give you wisdom and protection and that you would be sober and self-controlled and watchful.
We noticed your request did not mention the name of Jesus, and we want to gently remind you that it is only through Him that we have access to the Father. Jesus said in John 14:6 I am the way, the truth, and the life, no one comes to the Father, except through me. There is salvation in none other, for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, by which we must be saved in Acts 4:12. If your mother has only a profession of faith but has not truly been born again through repentance and faith in Jesus Christ, her greatest need is salvation, and if she is truly His, she still needs repentance, deliverance, and renewal in the truth. We pray with confidence only in His name.
We now pray together for you and for her. Father, in the name of Jesus Christ we come before Your throne of grace and we lift up this dear mother to You. Lord, You know the depth of her emotional and behavioral disturbance and You see what is of the flesh and what is of the enemy. We ask that You would shine Your light into every dark place, expose every lie and false belief, and bring her into the freedom of Your truth. If she does not truly know You, we pray You would draw her to genuine repentance and saving faith in Jesus. If she is Yours, we pray You would convict her, cleanse her, and restore to her a sound mind. We rebuke every influence of the evil one in her life and command in Jesus name that the enemy's work be broken and that he flee as she and those around her submit to You. Fill her with Your Holy Spirit, with power and love and self-control, and renew her mind by Your Word. Protect this child who has brought this request and all those affected by her behavior, guard their hearts and minds in Christ Jesus, give them wisdom to set godly boundaries, courage to speak truth in love, and peace that surpasses understanding. Lead them to faithful help and to a fellowship that teaches Your Word without compromise. We also lift up the others in this life where a similar heaviness is felt, that You would reveal what is true and bring deliverance and healing there as well. Your request concerning your mother has been received with much tenderness and we have carried it before the Lord who hears every groaning that is not hid from Him.
It is a heavy trial to love one who is given to such disturbance of mind and behavior, and to see in that behavior what appears to be the influence of the enemy working harm in the lives around her. We do not take such things lightly, for Scripture teaches that we wrestle not only against flesh and blood, and that the power of darkness is real. Yet we are also taught that deliverance from the power of sin and from the adversary is as much the work of God as deliverance from the guilt of sin, and that we must look to our heavenly Father altogether and alone for it.
There is comfort here for you. The Lord has found a ransom. When a soul is going down to the pit, He is gracious and says, Deliver him, for I have found a ransom. No one would have thought of such a way of deliverance if God had not thought of it Himself, that His own Son should bear the penalty of iniquity and save His people from themselves, from sin, from the devil and from evil. He who has delivered us from the power of darkness is able to keep back a soul from the pit and to bring forth His own with joy out of the house of bondage. What is impossible with man is possible with God, and there is no true liberty but that of which Christ makes us free through His shed blood.
We also remember that troubles do not spring out of the dust, but the Lord Himself sits as a Refiner by the furnace. That which comes by His permission, even when it is sore chastening, is in the hand of a Father who refines and who hears every tear and every prayer offered in the name of Jesus, the only way of salvation.
Let us pray together.
O gracious Father, we come through the blood of Thy Son, our only ransom and hope. Thou knowest this mother of whom we speak, her distress, her wrong beliefs, and the harm that has come through her to others. We ask not that Thou wouldst bless what is false or sinful, but that Thou wouldst deliver her from going down to the pit. Deliver her, we pray, from the power of darkness and translate her into the kingdom of Thy dear Son. Open her eyes to see Christ alone as Saviour, correct her in what is false, and bring her to love Thy truth. Restrain the adversary, break his influence, and protect those around her from harm. Give to this dear child who has asked for prayer, and to all others who are burdened, wisdom, discernment, patience and peace, and keep them close to Christ. We have heard your request and we are praying with you in this painful and heavy situation with your mother.
We understand your concern about her emotional and behavioral struggles and the sense that there is a spiritual element at work, and also your concern that she holds to wrong beliefs while professing faith in Christ. We do not take lightly the distress this causes you and those around her, and we bring it before the Lord asking for His mercy, truth and protection.
We are praying that God would make His presence and truth clear to your mother, that He would draw her to genuine repentance and faith in Jesus Christ alone, correct what is false in her thinking, and bring healing to what is troubled in her mind and heart. We pray that any influence of the enemy would be exposed and overcome by the power of Christ, and that she would be restored to soundness, humility and love for God and for others. We also pray that God would limit any harm that has come through her words or actions to you and to others, and that He would guard your hearts.
Prayer is a great weapon given to us, and we need it every day as we go out into the struggles and storms of daily life. We are praying for you early and late, that God would be propitious to you and give you favorable winds, wisdom and strength so that you are not shipwrecked by these trials. At the same time, Scripture teaches that we must remain watchful ourselves. The prayers of others profit us greatly, as the Church prayed earnestly for Peter and as God heard Cornelius, but we are also called to be alert and to seek the Lord ourselves. Continue with one accord in prayer, as the first believers did, and keep seeking Him personally each morning and evening.
