Mother

Good and Faithful Servant
My mother is a professing Christian but there is something spiritually wrong with her (multiple people have noticed it) and the enemy often uses her to harm people. I'm very upset today because my ex (who isn't a Christian) popped up this week randomly after refusing to speak to me and brought confusion and harm to my life after I had healed from our psychologically abusive relationship. Now at the same time, my mother is being used to harm me. This has happened before especially with this relationship with this ex because Satan really sent him in my life and I've experienced heightened satanic attacks from even entertaining the idea of dating him. I have since cut off contact with him. Thank you.

We hear your pain and your discernment in this situation and we are standing with you in prayer. We understand how heavy it is when the very people who should bring peace bring confusion and harm, and when an old wound is reopened at the same time. We want to bring this before the Lord together and also share some biblical counsel with you.

We affirm what you have recognized about spiritual warfare. Your adversary, the devil, walks around like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour, 1 Peter 5:8 and our wrestling is not against flesh and blood, but against the principalities, against the powers, against the world's rulers of the darkness of this age, and against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places, Ephesians 6:12. It is right to recognize that Satan can use people and situations to bring confusion, and it is also important to remember that greater is he who is in you than he who is in the world, 1 John 4:4. We do not fight this battle in our own strength, but by submitting to God and resisting the enemy, as James 4:7 says, Be subject therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

We also want to lovingly address the relationship with your ex. You said he is not a Christian and that the relationship was psychologically abusive, and you have now cut off contact. That decision to cut off contact is wise and we encourage you to maintain it firmly. Scripture is very clear, Don't be unequally yoked with unbelievers, for what fellowship do righteousness and iniquity have? Or what fellowship does light have with darkness? 2 Corinthians 6:14. A professing believer should not enter into courtship with an unbeliever. We view being a boyfriend or girlfriend not as casual dating but as courtship with the goal of marriage to another Christian believer, because we believe in the sanctity of marriage as a lifelong commitment between a man and a woman that honors God. Pursuing a relationship outside of that design, even entertaining the idea of dating an unbeliever, opens the door to confusion and harm and gives place to the enemy, Ephesians 4:27. If there was any sexual immorality in that relationship, which is fornication outside of marriage, we encourage you to confess it to God and receive His forgiveness, for we are told to flee sexual immorality, 1 Corinthians 6:18, and that God will forgive and cleanse us when we confess.

Concerning your mother, we hear that multiple people have noticed something spiritually wrong and that you feel the enemy often uses her to harm you. We want to pray for her deliverance and for your protection, while also reminding you of God's command to Honor your father and mother, which is the first commandment with a promise, Ephesians 6:2. Honoring does not mean you must remain in harm's way or receive abuse without boundaries. It means we speak truth in love, we forgive as Christ forgave us, we pray for her, and we seek wisdom for healthy boundaries. Sometimes a person's own unhealed wounds, unrepentant sin, or openness to deception can allow the enemy influence, even while professing faith. We must test the spirits and pray for her eyes to be opened, while guarding our own hearts and minds through Christ, 2 Corinthians 10:5.

We also noticed that your request did not mention the name of Jesus Christ. We gently point this out because we want you to know the full hope we have. Jesus said, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me, John 14:6. And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved, Acts 4:12. It is only through Jesus that we have access to God, that our prayers are heard, and that we have authority over the enemy. If you have not already, we encourage you to place your full trust in Jesus Christ, believing that He died for your sins and rose again, confessing Him as Lord, Romans 10:9. It is in His name that we pray and find healing from the psychological abuse and spiritual attacks you have endured.

We pray together now.

Heavenly Father, we come before You in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, and we lift up our sister to Your throne of grace. Lord, You see her broken heart and confusion, and Your Word says Yahweh is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit, Psalm 34:18. We ask You to draw near to her now and be her refuge and healer. We thank You that she has had the courage to cut off contact with this abusive and unequally yoked relationship, and we ask You to seal that door. We pray that every soul tie, every lie, and every psychological wound from that relationship would be broken in Jesus name, and that You would renew her mind and restore what the enemy has tried to steal. Give her discernment to not answer when confusion calls, and strength to walk in the freedom You have given her.

We also lift up her mother to You. Lord, You know what is spiritually wrong and what influence the enemy has. We pray for her deliverance, for conviction where there is sin, for healing where there is hurt, and for the light of Christ to shine in any darkness. We pray that You would protect our sister from harm and give her wisdom to honor her mother while setting godly boundaries that guard her peace. Help her to forgive as You have forgiven us, and to not give place to bitterness.

Father, we pray that You would fill her with Your Holy Spirit, clothe her with Your armor, and teach her to stand firm against every scheme of the enemy. Lead her to a strong, Bible believing church family and godly counsel where she can be supported and discipled. And we pray that in Your perfect timing, You would bring a godly Christian spouse into her life if it is Your will, a marriage that honors You and reflects Christ's love for the church, rather than another harmful entanglement.

We ask all of this in the saving and powerful name of Jesus Christ, our only hope. Amen.

We encourage you to remain steadfast in cutting off all contact with your ex, blocking communication if needed, and not entertaining conversation that brings confusion. Fill that space with prayer, the Word, worship, and fellowship with mature believers who can walk with you. Continue to pray for your mother, but also seek wise pastoral counsel about boundaries so you can love her without being continually harmed. God will use even this painful season for good as you trust Him, Romans 8:28.

Thank you for sharing this so honestly. It makes sense you feel upset and worn down right now, with an old wound reopened by your ex reaching out again and at the same time feeling hurt by your mother. Carrying both at once would leave anyone feeling confused and on edge.

We are glad to hear you have cut off contact after a psychologically abusive relationship. That is a hard and brave boundary to hold, and it is understandable that even brief contact after a season of healing would stir up a lot again. When family relationships also feel harmful, it can be especially painful and isolating.

One steady step that may help in the weeks ahead is to not carry this alone. Keep the no-contact boundary you have set, and identify one or two safe, trusted people, a pastor, a mature Christian friend, or a counselor, you can reach out to right away if your ex tries to contact you again or when interactions with your mom feel overwhelming. Having someone to talk with in the moment can help you sort what is yours to respond to and what is healthier to step back from, and give you ongoing support as you continue to heal from the past abuse.

We are praying for you.

Father, we lift our sister to You. You see her hurt and confusion and the strain in these relationships. Cover her with Your peace, guard her heart and mind in Christ, and give her wisdom for each boundary and decision. Surround her with safe, caring people and guide her toward healing and clarity. Lead her step by step in Your will. In Jesus' name, amen.

Your burden has been brought before the Lord and before His people, and we have carried it to the throne of grace on your behalf.

There is a wound that only the Great Physician can heal, and there is a balm that flows from Christ Himself. As it is written, He healeth the broken in heart and bindeth up their wounds. The very leaves of the tree of life are for the healing of the nations, and the least thing about Christ has healing virtue in it. After we have been saved from sin by faith in Jesus Christ, everything about Him helps to purge and cleanse the blood which as yet is not wholly cleansed. That medicine is given and appointed for the very purpose of healing, and it is freely given to those who come to Him in faith.

We thank God that you have cut off contact with one who brought confusion and harm, and who did not know Christ. The Scripture teaches that salvation is through Jesus Christ alone, and that a man and a woman are not to be unequally yoked. What you have described as psychological abuse and confusion is not the pattern of a covenant of love as God ordained it, where marriage is the lifelong union of one man and one woman and where affection and intimacy belong within that covenant. To turn away from such a harmful and unequally yoked entanglement is wisdom, and it is right to remain apart from it. We will not ask God to bless or restore what would lead you away from obedience and into further harm, but we do ask Him to keep you in purity and uprightness and to preserve you from all the devices of the enemy. In answer to the prayer, Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the Evil One, the Lord is able to keep you so that the Evil One touches you not.

In your sorrow concerning your mother, we also pray with you. To honour a parent and to set a needful boundary against harm are both commanded, and they can be held together in love. When those nearest to us become instruments of pain, whether through their own wounds or through the subtle working of the adversary, our first concern must be not only to be delivered from suffering but to be kept from sin. Like Job, who in all his great loss sinned not, we pray that you may be kept from bitterness, from returning evil for evil, and from any iniquity having dominion over you. Pray daily, Lord, keep my feet that I stumble not, and preserve me with garments unspotted from the world. Seek first the kingdom of God and obedience to Him, and then deliverance shall be added unto you.

We pray for your mother as one who professes faith in Christ. We ask the Lord to search her heart, to forgive sin and then to bring healing, for pardon and healing flow from the same pierced hand. We ask that He would put His fear in her heart so that she shall not depart from Him, and that He would preserve you both from all evil and preserve your souls.

May the Lord grant you healing draughts of His grace. May you know that all the eternal penal consequences are gone from the forgiven, and that for you there is no condemnation. May He breathe into your soul at this very moment a peace with God which passes all understanding, which springs from perfect remission of sin. May you be kept from the pestilence that walks in darkness, from deceitful errors and sins, and may you hear the Word of God with heedfulness, for when Christ was teaching, the power to heal was present.

We will continue to pray that you will be rooted in the fellowship of faithful believers, under the regular teaching of the Word, and if the wounds of that abusive relationship still trouble your mind and heart, that you will seek wise and godly counsel and help within the church to walk in safety and wholeness. The Lord who allowed this trial is the same Lord who will be your conduit of abundant streams of healing flowing down to you from above.

O Lord, forgive and heal this dear one. Cleanse by the blood of Christ, calm the agitated bosom, wipe the tear from the eye, and take the furrow from the brow. Keep this child from sin and from the snares of the enemy, establish her feet upon the Rock, and let her prove in her own life that the leaves of the tree are indeed for healing. In the name of Jesus Christ our only Saviour, Amen.

May God in Jesus' name answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. God is so in love with you. Be Encouraged!

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

Thank you for sharing this so honestly and for trusting us to pray with you. What you describe is deeply painful and confusing, to have found healing after a psychologically abusive relationship and then to have that confusion stirred up again by your ex reaching out, and at the same time to feel hurt by your own mother. It makes sense that you feel upset and spiritually attacked.

Your decision to cut off contact with your ex is wise and right, and we encourage you to remain firm in it. Scripture is clear that salvation is through Jesus Christ alone and that God calls his people not to be bound together with those who do not share faith in him. A relationship that is outside of faith, that has been abusive and that pulls you into confusion and harm, is not one God asks you to bless or to return to. God’s design for marriage is a lifelong covenant of one man and one woman, with intimacy and shared life belonging within that covenant. To step away from a relationship that violates that design and that has harmed you is not failure, it is protection and obedience. We will not pray for that relationship to be restored, but we will pray for your healing to continue and for your ex to come to know Christ for his own salvation, apart from you.

It is also right to take seriously that the enemy seeks to confuse and harm, but Scripture also teaches us to examine ourselves strictly. One of the homilies reminds us that sin is more grievous than a demon, because a demon may afflict a person and leave them humbled, while sin, if we hold onto it, leaves a habit and a kind of venom in the soul even after the act is over. That is why we are called to free not only our neighbors but first ourselves, by chasing away worldly cares and strengthening our minds in the truth. This is not to blame you for the abuse you suffered, you did not cause it, but it is an invitation to keep asking God to search your own heart, to keep you from bitterness, from returning to what harmed you, and from any habit of sin that would make you more vulnerable. Healing after abuse takes time, and even after health returns, the soul can remain sensitive. God can use even this painful trial to make you more sober, more self controlled, and more dependent on him, and if you bear it thankfully he will purify and strengthen you.

Concerning your mother, we hear how heavy this is. We are called to honor our parents, and also to not plot against those who harm us or return harm for harm. When someone harms us, even a parent, we injure ourselves more if we respond with hatred or revenge, and we benefit ourselves when we respond with truth and grace. That does not mean staying open to being harmed. Loving your mother can include setting clear and calm boundaries, limiting contact when needed for safety, refusing to engage in harmful conversations, and seeking wise counsel from a pastor or mature believers who know you both. Continue to pray for her, that God would bring her into greater health and wholeness in Christ, and that any spiritual oppression or pattern of sin that others have noticed would be broken. Pray also for discernment for yourself, to see clearly when you are being pulled into confusion and to step away.

Here are some practical steps we encourage as you move forward. Keep no contact with your ex, including blocking phone and social media if that helps you stay free from confusion. Stay rooted in daily prayer and Scripture, and bring your thoughts to God honestly. Stay connected to faithful Christian community where you can be known and supported, and consider meeting with a pastor or biblical counselor who can walk with you regarding both the past abuse and the ongoing pain with your mother. Practice doing good even to those who have hurt you, not by reentering harmful relationships, but by releasing bitterness, forgiving as Christ has forgiven you, and refusing to speak or act in ways that would harm them in return.

We are praying for you now. Father, we thank you that you see this daughter and love her. We ask in the name of Jesus Christ, our only Savior, that you would guard her mind and heart with your peace, heal the wounds left by abuse, and keep her firm in her resolve to walk away from what harms her. Give her wisdom and strength to set loving boundaries with her mother, bring healing to her mother and to their relationship where possible, and protect this family from the enemy’s schemes. Lead her into deeper freedom from every habit of sin, fill her with your Holy Spirit, and surround her with faithful people who will help her grow in holiness and hope. We ask that her ex would come to know you, and that you would keep her from any further entanglement with him. Restore to her joy, clarity, and confidence in your goodness, and help her to use this trial for your glory. Amen.
