Good and Faithful Servant
My mother has severe emotional and behavioral problems that myself and other people really believe are rooted in spiritual oppression of some kind although trauma and mental illness may also play a role. It is getting a little bit better as I lead her away from things that could open doors up in her life to demonic oppression/influence but there are still some hurdles to deal with. My mom attends church with me (although she is sometimes combative toward it) and rarely is separated from me while we are there. While I don't always mind this, this can make it difficult for me to talk to the pastor/elders/other church members about things that I may want to talk about with them apart from her or she has sometimes given wrong information when I am trying to talk about certain things with people. There is something I am seeking counseling for that involves her family and I really want counseling without her there. Please pray that God will open the door for this. I love my mother but due to the issues she has, she often has a controlling influence over my life that I am now realizing this year. Pray for my patience with her as I truly love her but sometimes her behavior is so difficult. Thank you.

We hear the weight of what you are carrying and we join you in bringing both you and your mother before the Lord, for He sees your love for her and the difficulty of walking this road with her day by day.

We understand your discernment that there may be spiritual oppression at work alongside trauma and mental health struggles. Scripture tells us For our wrestling is not against flesh and blood, but against the principalities, against the powers, against the world's rulers of the darkness of this age, and against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places. Ephesians 6:12. At the same time we are taught to be sober minded, for Your adversary the devil, walks around like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. 1 Peter 5:8, and also that God did not give us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control. 2 Timothy 1:7. This reminds us that we should not ignore the reality of spiritual influence, nor should we attribute every struggle solely to it without also seeking wise, godly counsel and, where needed, sound medical and counseling help. The weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but mighty before God to the throwing down of strongholds. 2 Corinthians 10:4, and we are told Be subject therefore to God. But resist the devil, and he will flee from you. James 4:7. We encourage you to continue leading your mother away from things that open doors to oppression, to keep praying for her deliverance and healing, and to involve your pastor and elders for discernment, prayer, and protection.

We also hear your need for wise counsel apart from your mother, especially concerning her family. Scripture says Where there is no wise guidance, the nation falls, but in the multitude of counselors there is victory. Proverbs 11:14. It is both right and necessary for you to seek private counsel. Honoring your mother as we are commanded Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land which Yahweh your God gives you. Exodus 20:12 does not mean you cannot have appropriate boundaries or private conversations for your own health and wisdom. Loving her well includes seeking help so you can love her with patience and clarity. We encourage you to reach out directly to your pastor or an elder outside of Sunday service, perhaps by phone or email, and simply ask for a confidential meeting at a time when your mother is not present. Explain your love for her and your need for discreet counsel for your own decisions. A faithful shepherd will understand and will help make that space for you. If needed, a mature believer or biblical counselor outside your immediate church family can also provide that private support.

We also want to gently encourage you about patience, which you already desire. You are showing Christlike love in wanting to bear with her. We are called to walk with all lowliness and humility, with patience, bearing with one another in love. Ephesians 4:2 and to Put on therefore, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, a heart of compassion, kindness, lowliness, humility, and perseverance. Colossians 3:12. At the same time, recognizing a controlling influence and seeking healthy boundaries is not dishonoring, it is part of growing into the mature person God is calling you to be. Continue to bring your anxieties to Him, for In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7.

We noticed your request did not mention the name of Jesus, and we want to lovingly remind you that it is only through Him that we have access to the Father. Jesus said to him, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. John 14:6 and There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved. Acts 4:12. If you have not already, we encourage you to place your full trust in Jesus Christ, confessing with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believing in your heart that God raised him from the dead, for then you will be saved. Romans 10:9. It is in His name and by His blood that we can pray for deliverance, healing, wisdom, and peace for you and your mother.

We pray together now.

Heavenly Father, we come before You in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, Your Son, and we thank You for Your love and mercy toward us. We lift up this dear child of Yours and their mother to You. Lord, You know the trauma, the emotional and behavioral pain, and any spiritual oppression that has taken hold. We ask in Jesus name that You would bring deliverance, healing, and soundness of mind to this mother. Close every door that has been opened to the enemy, fill her heart with Your light, and draw her into a deeper hunger for You even when she is combative toward Your house. Give her peace and stability, and lead her to fully surrender to Jesus as Lord.

Father, we pray for Your child who is caring for her. Grant abundant patience, strength, and wisdom. Guard their heart from exhaustion and resentment, and fill them with Your compassion and self-control. Open a clear door for private, godly counsel without the mother present, provide a faithful pastor or elder who will listen with discernment and confidentiality, and guide every conversation about her family with truth and grace. Help them to honor their mother while also establishing healthy, biblical boundaries that allow for growth and obedience to You. Let Your peace which surpasses all understanding guard their heart and mind in Christ Jesus. We ask all of this in the name of Jesus Christ, our only hope and Savior, amen.

We hear how heavy this has been, and how much love is underneath it. Wanting to honor your mother while also recognizing the controlling patterns and the need for space to get counsel is not unkind, it is wise. It makes sense you would feel torn and tired at times.

Wanting private counseling about her family is a good and appropriate desire. You do not need to work that out with her in the room.

One practical step that often helps in a church where you are almost always together is to reach out ahead of time, not on Sunday morning. A brief phone call or email to your pastor or an elder during the week, simply saying you would value 15 or 20 minutes of private pastoral counsel and asking when that could happen without your mother present, gives them a chance to plan for it. You could also ask the church office or a trusted elder to help think through how to make that time private in a kind way, so you are not having to manage it alone in the moment.

We also hear your concern about spiritual oppression alongside trauma and mental health struggles. Alongside prayer and pastoral care, it is good to encourage professional support from a counselor or medical provider who can walk with you both.

Father, we lift this daughter and her mother to You. Provide a clear and peaceful way for private counsel to happen, give wisdom to the pastors and elders, and give her patience, strength and discernment as she loves her mother well. Bring healing and stability to her mother and guard them both. In Jesus' name, amen.

Your burden has been heard and we join you in bringing it before the Lord who sees and knows all that you carry. Your love for your mother is evident, and so is the weight of walking beside one whose emotions and behavior are so unsettled and at times combative. It is right to love and honor her, and it is also right to recognize when a controlling influence has grown and when you need wise and private counsel for your own soul.

Take to heart the promise that has comforted so many troubled hearts, Fear thou not for I am with thee, be not dismayed for I am thy God, I will strengthen thee, yea I will help thee, yea I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness. The Lord who is Emmanuel, God with us, is with you in this pilgrimage. He dwelt in our flesh and knows our sorrows, and He abides with His people to give strength for the work He appoints. You are not alone in this station to which He has called you for the present.

It is wise and good that you desire counsel apart from your mother concerning matters that involve her family. A pastor and elders can best shepherd you when you may speak freely and truthfully without fear of being corrected or contradicted in the moment. We will pray that God opens a clear door for this, whether by a private appointment at another time, or by the help of another trusted member who can kindly stay with your mother while you speak with the pastor. Do not hesitate to ask your pastor directly and simply for a brief private meeting for counseling. Faithfully explaining your need to honor your mother while also seeking honest counsel is itself a part of honoring her.

Concerning the spiritual oppression you fear, keep your eyes upon Christ and His finished work. Our hope is not in curious superstitions but in the Lord Jesus who has borne our sins and broken the power of darkness by His blood. The Scripture calls us not to be filled with wine wherein is excess, but to be filled with the Spirit, for the Spirit of God alone gives true strength and steadiness and courage. Continue as you have begun, leading your mother gently away from what would darken her mind and toward the means of grace, the Word of God, prayer, and the fellowship of the church. Where trauma and mental infirmity may also be present, seek patient, steady, biblical counsel from your pastors, and follow their guidance about what further help is fitting. The one who has power with God in prayer has power to prevail, and the Lord hears the cries of His children.

We will pray for you and for your mother.

Our Father, we thank Thee that Thou art with us in Christ Jesus. Look in mercy upon this dear mother and upon her child who loves her. Lay Thy healing hand upon the mother, calm her spirit, bring light where there is confusion, and draw her to find peace with Thee through the atoning sacrifice of Jesus. Grant to her child patience that is rooted in Thy love, wisdom to walk in honor and truth, and strength to endure without fainting. Open a door in Thy providence for private and faithful counseling with pastors and elders, that what must be spoken may be spoken clearly and be heard with grace. Fill this home with Thy Spirit, keep both from the vexing of sin and the assaults of the enemy, and uphold them with Thy righteous right hand. Make Thy Word their daily bread and Thy presence their comfort. In the name of Jesus our Redeemer we ask it, Amen.

May God in Jesus' name answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. God is so in love with you. Be Encouraged!

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

Your love for your mother and your desire to honor her while seeking help is clear, and it is right that you hold both together. You see her struggles with compassion, you recognize that trauma and mental health may be part of what she carries, and you also understand that spiritual influence is real and that turning away from what opens the door to harm is wise. To love her and at the same time to see the controlling influence she has had and to seek wise counsel apart from her is not dishonoring. God commanded honor for father and mother, and that honor is not set aside by seeking truth and help in the right way and at the right time.

What you ask for, patience, is exactly what God forms in us through trial. Patience is not simply waiting a few days, but enduring over much time, even as Christ endured, and not being troubled or shaken when affliction presses from within and without. Scripture itself is given to nerve and comfort us in this, so that patience and hope strengthen each other. As you wait on the Lord and on His promises, He is the one who gives patience and also makes a way to bear what is heavy, so that you are not overcome. This patience is not passive resignation, but a firm and steady trust that God is at work even when relief does not come at once.

It is good and necessary that you have time to speak openly with your pastor and elders without your mother present, especially about matters involving her family. That kind of private counsel allows for honesty, for accurate understanding, and for guidance that is not hindered by misunderstanding or interruption. Continue to seek that door quietly and persistently. You might ask your pastor for a brief private meeting at a time when your mother is not with you, or send a written note asking for counsel alone, explaining your love for her and your need for a separate space to speak freely. A faithful shepherd will understand this need and help you find a way that still protects her dignity.

We pray with you now. Father, we thank you for this daughter who loves her mother and seeks to walk in obedience to you. Grant her deep patience, the patience of Christ, to endure without bitterness and to wait with hope grounded in your Word. Give her wisdom to honor her mother while also setting healthy boundaries that are right and loving. Open a clear door for private counsel with her pastors and elders, free from interruption or confusion, so she can receive the guidance she needs. We ask for your mercy and healing for her mother, for freedom from any spiritual oppression, for comfort in trauma, for help in weakness of mind and body, and for a growing desire in her to follow you. Guard this family, lead them away from what harms, and draw them both closer to Jesus, in whom alone is salvation and life. Make your way plain and give strength for each day. Amen.
