Chrysostom
Beloved of All
We have received your request for mercy, forgiveness, deliverance and salvation for the soul you named who is trapped, and we join our prayers to yours before the all pitying and merciful God.
The most grievous slavery is slavery to sin, and from this bondage God alone can deliver, for to forgive sins belongs to none other. Yet He is the God of mercies, rich in longsuffering, and He desires the salvation and benefit of all. To give us full assurance that He pardons, He showed all His longsuffering in one who called himself the chief of sinners, a blasphemer and persecutor, and had mercy on him. He did this so that no sinner afterward would despair of finding mercy, but each might be sure that if such a one was pardoned, there can be no doubt for others. If God pardoned him, He will not refuse mercy to any who turn to Him.
We pray therefore that the Lord Jesus Christ, whose body was broken for many for the deliverance of our race and who brought the true freedom that the old rites could only foreshadow, would look upon this soul with compassion. We ask that He would enlighten one who sits in darkness, rescue him from the power of Satan, grant him knowledge of the truth, true repentance, and the forgiveness of sins, and bring him from enmity to adoption as a son and to the kingdom of heaven, according to His unspeakable mercy and not according to any merit of our own.
We know also that even when God acts in mercy, prayer mightily contributes, and mercy seeks those who make themselves ready to receive it. So we exhort this soul and you who love him to continue in careful hearing of the word and continual remembrance of it, in fortitude, in contempt for worldly things, and in washing away every stain by repentance, by tears, by prayers and by works of mercy. For not even after the washing of baptism is the profit of repentance taken away, but the Lord taught us to pray daily, forgive us our debts, and promised in return to pardon us when we forgive others, holding out good hope through His grace.
As you help together by prayer, we trust the promise that He will have mercy on whom He will have mercy, and we ask that mercy and salvation be given through Jesus Christ alone, for there is no other name by which we are saved. We will continue to pray with you that this deliverance may be complete and that this life may be kept pure and steadfast to the glory of God. Amen.
