The weight of preparing food, the cost, the shifting of your mood when your body receives what it cannot bear, this is a real trial, and it is not trivial. Yet consider how the soul, even more than the body, needs its proper nourishment and cannot thrive on that which is foreign to its new nature. Spiritual food comforts mourners, and often, the best possible cure for a poor, dispirited, fainting soul is a good meal of Gospel food. Your bright spirits will, in that way, come back to you. When the body is a burden and the pantry seems bare, let faith turn to the milk of the Word, which does feed the soul, the simplest Truths of Christianity contain in them all that the soul needs, just as milk is a diet upon which the body could be sustained without anything else.
But do not imagine that your physical limitation is a sign of God’s neglect. We are not so absolutely dependent upon the bread we eat as, at first sight, seems, food is but the vehicle of sustenance, God could sustain us without it. Even now we know that there are many ways by which waste can be suspended and the need of food greatly lessened. If He so wills it, this frame might be sustained by His own immediate hand. The same God who gives you the diet that your body requires will give you the time and provision to secure it; He is not a wilderness to His people. The preparation itself, which seems so costly and so wearying, may be turned into a sacred exercise. Before the great feast, a Jewish parent would sweep out every piece of leaven with a candle, searching every cupboard however unlikely. Let your necessity for careful, advance preparation become a holy diligence, a setting apart of your life in little things. If we acted aright, we would never come, even to the hearing of a sermon, without prayer. So in the chopping of vegetables and the boiling of water, let supplication rise.
When your mood darkens because your body has been betrayed by wrong food, do not let the enemy accuse you as though you were forsaken. There is no spiritual nutriment in despair. Instead, see that your very need drives you to the strong meat of doctrine, the deep things that are for full grown men. You are being exercised by these trials, your nostrils trained to detect what is wholesome and what is toxic, both for the body and the soul. And in this, look to the Seal of your preparation for heaven. The work is not yet done; it must be found before we die. Do not be afraid to be happy even now. If you are in health, live for Christ earnestly. If you are bound to pain, live for Christ patiently. Go about your business and sing for Jesus. Or if He bids you stay at home and cough away your life, then cough for Jesus. But let everything be for Him. You have the guarantee that you shall abide in Christ in the Covenant engagement, "I will put My fear in their hearts, that they shall not depart from Me." This is the real meat that sustains you, the food the world knows not of, which fits you to feed others in your turn even through your weakness.
