Your prayer reflects a biblical heart that longs for the Lord Jesus to reign and for His Word to guide those in authority. Scripture teaches that the heart of a ruler is in the hand of the Lord and that He directs it as He wills, and it also calls us to pray for all who are in authority so that we may lead peaceful lives and so that many may come to know salvation through Christ alone. It is right to ask that those who govern would submit themselves to God, seek His counsel, and rule in a way that honors His truth.

The foundation for such prayer is wisdom, and the beginning of wisdom is the fear of the Lord. To fear the Lord is to hate evil. That hatred of evil is not bitterness toward people but a settled turning away from pride, arrogance, perverse speech and every crooked way. When wisdom enters the heart and knowledge becomes pleasant to the soul, discretion preserves a person and understanding keeps him. That wisdom delivers from the way of the evil person and from those who speak twisted things, who leave upright paths to walk in darkness and who delight in doing wrong. It also guards against flattering lips and deceitful enticements. Praying that leaders would fear the Lord, depart from evil, and not be wise in their own eyes is praying for their true health and stability, and for the good of the people they serve.

There are two kinds of wisdom. One is earthly, driven by envy and selfish ambition, which brings confusion and every evil work. The other is from above. That wisdom is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy. It leads to purity instead of lust, to peace instead of strife, and its fruit is righteousness sown in peace by those who make peace. You can discern which wisdom a person is following by the life that follows. As you pray for those in government, in the courts, in defense and intelligence, and for all who bear responsibility, ask that God would grant them the wisdom that comes from above rather than the wisdom of this world which the Scriptures call foolishness with God.

A prudent person foresees evil and takes refuge, while the simple go on and suffer for it. To foresee evil and hide in the provision God has made through Christ is itself an act of wisdom. So it is right to pray for protection from falsehood, from imposters, from leaks and from evil plans, and to ask the Lord to restrain evil and to frustrate counsels that are against what is good and true, as He did when He revealed the plans of enemies to Elisha. It is also right to pray, as Jesus taught us, lead them not into temptation and deliver them from evil, and as He prayed for His own, keep them from the evil one. The Lord is faithful and He keeps His people, and He gives His angels charge to guard them.

Continue to seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, to pray continually and not lose heart, and to trust in the Lord with all your heart rather than leaning on your own understanding. No ruler is perfect, and our ultimate hope is in the coming of His kingdom and the doing of His will on earth as it is in heaven. In the meantime, pray that those in authority would know what to do, what priorities to set, and that they would fulfill the purposes God has for them in this generation, as David served the purpose of God in his own time. There is no other name under heaven by which we must be saved but the name of Jesus, and in Him all the promises of God are yes and amen. As you bring these requests with thanksgiving, may the peace of God guard your heart and mind in Christ Jesus.
