We thank God for your faithful intercession and for the burden He has placed on your heart to pray for those in authority. Your request reflects the apostolic command to offer supplications, prayers and intercessions for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence, and that God our Savior who desires all people to be saved may be known.

Scripture teaches that the institution of governing authority is ordained by God for order and for the restraint of evil. Anarchy is an evil and a cause of confusion, and God in His wisdom has established rulers and ruled, that all things should not be carried on in disorder. This does not mean every individual ruler is personally chosen by God or that every act of a ruler is godly, but that the power itself is His ordinance, and those who resist that ordinance resist what God has appointed for the good of humanity. For this reason we are called both to be subject and to pray.

We join you in asking that the Lord will grant to presidents, vice presidents, secretaries, legislators, judges, generals and all who bear responsibility for the security and welfare of nations a love for His Word and a willingness to be guided by it. As it is written that a ruler should write for himself a copy of the law and read it all the days of his life, so we pray that they would seek wisdom from above and not the wisdom of this world which is coming to nothing. True counsel is found in the multitude of godly counselors and in the fear of the Lord, not in cleverness of speech or worldly policy alone. May God grant them humility to ask Him for wisdom, clarity to know what to do, and courage to carry out what is just and good in their generation.

We also join you in praying for protection and for the restraint of evil. We ask the Lord to keep these leaders from the evil one, to deliver them from temptation, to expose falsehood and to frustrate every evil plan formed in secret, as He once revealed the plans of enemies to Elisha. We pray that God will remove influence that is deceitful and self serving and raise up those who will speak truth, and that He will overrule what is intended for harm according to His sovereign purpose. Above all we pray as you have prayed that His kingdom would come and His will be done on earth as it is in heaven, knowing that no ruler is perfect and that our ultimate hope is in Christ alone.

We will continue to pray with you that God would guard these men and women, give His angels charge over them, keep them from the evil one as promised in His Word, and above all draw them and all peoples to salvation through Jesus Christ, for there is no other name given among men by which we must be saved. May the peace of God guard your own heart and mind in Christ Jesus as you continue steadfast in prayer.
