We hear your heart, dear brother, and we stand with you in this painful season. Twenty-nine years of marriage is a sacred covenant before God, and the silence and distance you now endure must feel like a slow unraveling of something once beautiful. Yet we see your faithfulness, your choice to remain obedient to God’s Word, even when obedience brings no earthly reward. That is not weakness; that is the strength of Christ in you.
The Bible tells us in Malachi 2:16, "For I hate divorce," says the Lord, the God of Israel, "and him who covers his garment with violence!" says the Lord of Hosts. "Therefore take heed to your spirit, that you don’t deal treacherously." We do not know the full story of why your wife has withdrawn, but we know this: God hates the breaking of covenants. He hates the tearing apart of what He has joined together (Matthew 19:6). And yet, even in this, He is near to the brokenhearted (Psalm 34:18).
We must also speak plainly about the reality of what you are facing. If your wife has emotionally abandoned the marriage, it may feel like a death, but it is not the end of God’s story for you. First Corinthians 7:15 says, "But if the unbeliever departs, let there be separation. The brother or the sister is not under bondage in such cases, but God has called us to peace." If she has hardened her heart against reconciliation, you are not bound to chase after her or beg for what she will not give. But we must also caution you: do not let bitterness take root. Forgive her, as Christ has forgiven you (Colossians 3:13). Release her to God, for vengeance belongs to Him alone (Romans 12:19).
And what of your own heart? Loneliness can be a heavy burden, but it is not a void God cannot fill. Psalm 68:6 says, "God sets the lonely in families." Even if your earthly family feels fractured, you are never alone. The Lord is your husband (Isaiah 54:5), your provider, your comforter. We encourage you to seek godly fellowship, men who will pray with you, hold you accountable, and remind you of God’s promises. Do not isolate yourself in this grief.
We also urge you to examine your own walk with Christ. Are there areas where you have grown complacent? Have you allowed the pain of this season to harden your heart toward God’s voice? James 4:8 says, "Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you." Even in this valley, He is calling you deeper. Let this be a time of refining, not just surviving.
Now, let us pray:
Heavenly Father, we come before You with heavy hearts for our brother. Lord, You see the years of faithfulness, the silent tears, the obedience in the face of rejection. You know the ache of a love that has grown cold, of a covenant that feels broken. But You are the God who heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds (Psalm 147:3). We ask that You would be his comfort in this season. Give him strength to stand firm in Your truth, even when the world calls him a fool for doing so.
Father, we pray for his wife. If there is any hardness in her heart, soften it. If there is sin, convict her. If there is fear, draw her to repentance. But if she has chosen a path away from this marriage, we ask that You would release our brother from the bondage of false hope. Let him walk in the peace that comes from trusting You, even when the future is unclear.
Lord, we ask that You would fill the loneliness with Your presence. Surround him with godly men who will sharpen him, encourage him, and remind him of Your promises. Protect his heart from bitterness, from despair, from the lies of the enemy that say this pain will never end. Remind him that You are making all things new (Revelation 21:5), even this.
And Father, if it is Your will, we ask that You would restore this marriage. But if not, we pray that You would use this season for Your glory, that our brother would emerge with a deeper faith, a stronger testimony, and a heart that trusts You more than ever before. We pray all of this in the mighty name of Jesus, the Author and Perfecter of our faith. Amen.
Brother, you are not forgotten. You are not abandoned. The same God who parted the Red Sea, who raised Jesus from the dead, who holds the stars in place, He is holding you. Cling to Him. Trust Him. And know that we are standing with you, praying for you, believing with you that God is still writing your story.
