It is well that you have turned to the Lord in this hour of bodily weakness. Our gracious Physician never wearies of attending to the cries of His children. When the body is racked with such a distressing ailment, how speedily we discover that all strength apart from God is derived strength and must utterly fail. Yet from the measureless fountain of His love you shall draw strength which all eternity will not exhaust.
The very leaves of the tree of life are for the healing of the nations, and the least thing about Christ is full of healing virtue. Do you not know that He gives power to the faint, and to them that have no might He increases strength? Jehovah Rophi can commence tonight that blessed process by which every trembling member of your frame shall be braced up. He can breathe into your soul at this very moment a peace with God which passes all understanding, even while the body groans. That peace is a present possession, peace, perfect peace, even with sorrows surging round. The blood of Jesus whispers peace within, and when you fix your mind on Him, He will keep you in perfect peace, peace, peace, because you trust in Him.
Do not look for strength where it cannot be found. The joy of the Lord is your strength, not your own resolves. When you are utterly stripped of all power and brought low, then is the time to cast your guilty, weak, and helpless soul upon Christ’s kind arms. Out of weakness were made strong, says the Scripture, and it is often when we feel our infirmities most keenly that we plead most importunately for His aid and then, in the strength gained by prayer, attain to heights of recovery.
Take this affliction as a fresh call to trust entirely. If you would renew your strength, plunge afresh into a baptism of the Spirit; submit yourself completely, and give yourself up for God to use you. Many a child of God, when weary, has renewed his strength at the remembrance of pardoning mercy. Let the chastisement of your peace rest upon Him, for with His stripes we are healed. The healing power is conspicuously present when Christ is teaching, so open His Word, hear Him speak, and faith will come.
I join my prayer with yours, that the Lord will stop the illness, restore your health, protect you from all dangerous weakness, and grant you speedy recovery. May He give you quiet strength instead of fussy worry. Bear your distress with Him, and you will find rest in doing the will of Jesus. Soon these struggles shall cease, and He will call us to Heaven’s perfect peace. Until then, trust and be still, for the eternal God is your arm every morning, your salvation in the time of trouble.
