You applied back in January, and the day is nearly upon you, and I can well imagine how the waiting has tugged at your heart. It is one thing to commit a matter to God, and quite another to keep it there through the long stretch of uncertainty. But do not think that the Lord has forgotten you in the silence. He has not been idle. While you have waited, He has been going before you, preparing the way, shaping circumstances you cannot see, and smoothing a path you will not know until your foot is already upon it.
There is a word I would have you carry with you into that room: prevent. The old meaning of it is not to hinder but to go before. David, shut up with his enemies watching the house, sang, “The God of my mercy shall prevent me.” He knew that before ever he reached the door, his God was already there. So it is with you. The Lord Jesus Christ steps into that interview ahead of every question, every glance of the eye, every weighing of your worth. The people who will decide, their hearts are in His hand. He can turn them as easily as He turns the channels of water. You go in with a love letter folded in your pocket, so to speak: His own promise that His mercy meets you at the threshold.
I would not have you pin your whole soul’s peace on the outcome, as though your future hung upon a single word from a human voice. The things that are seen are shadows; the things invisible are the only substances. A position accepted or a position denied, neither one can touch the solid ground beneath your feet. You are already accepted in the Beloved, and that sweet savor can never be snatched away. Let that truth steady you as you answer the questions set before you. You are not a beggar knocking at a stranger’s gate; you are a child of the household, and your Father has already supplied all your need according to His riches in glory.
Picture it this way, a ship out in deep water. The shallows might seem safer, but the deep is what holds her steady. So it is with the deep things of God. When you feel your own resources are thin and your tongue might falter, remember that underneath are the everlasting arms. Not the arms of your own preparation or your own charm, the arms of the eternal God, who has carried you from the womb and has never once let you slip. If the answer is yes, He will give you grace to rejoice. If the answer is no, He will still be your shelter and your exceedingly great reward. Either way, you cannot fall out of those arms.
Go, then, in a quiet confidence, not in yourself, but in the God who goes before and underneath and behind. Let your heart be at rest. He who provided the ram in the thicket for Abraham will provide what is needed for you. The same love that endured the nails for you has not grown cold by the time it reaches your small, daily cares.
Lord Jesus, You who went before Your people in a pillar of cloud and fire, go before this dear soul now. Calm every anxious thought, steady every nerve, and grant a clarity that comes only from Your Spirit. Let the interviewers see not a striving applicant but a quiet child of God whose trust is anchored elsewhere. Give favor where favor is needed, and give peace that passes understanding whether the door opens or closes. For Your name’s sake, and because You are the God who answers prayer, we ask it. Amen.
