Prayer Focus: God, Thank You for loving me. Thank You for loving me, Jesus. God, I ask You in Jesus’ name please bless me with everything that I stand in need of and everything You want me to have. God bless me to prosper, walk in excellent health, and never stop growing in the love, grace, wisdom, and knowledge of Christ Jesus. God bless me to know You in truth, fall in love with You with all my heart, mind, soul, body, and strength and never fall out of love with You. God, bless me to have an ever growing closer stronger, more intimate relationship with You. Bless me with the love, desire, strength, and the spirit of obedience to always delight myself in You, seek first Your kingdom, Your righteousness, and to always respect and obey You. Bless me to know You, the way You want me to know You. So that I will trust You with my life and anyway that You move in my life. Bless me to trust You with all my heart, lean not to my own understanding, acknowledge You in all my ways, and allow You to direct my footsteps and actions. Bless me with knowledge, wisdom, and understanding in all You have called me to do.

God heal me in every area of my life. Deliver and cleanse me of everything in my life that doesn't honor You. Transform and renew my mind. Bless me with love, power, and a sound mind. Let the mind that is in Christ Jesus be in me. Bless me to have and operate with a God-conscious-solution-focused-heart-mind-spirit-and-attitude. Bless me to have a God Kingdom Culture Mentality. God be with me as a mighty warrior. Let no weapon formed against me prosper. Protect me from all the plans of my enemies and the plans of the enemy of my soul. Your honest and humble prayer has been heard, and I thank you for speaking so plainly about your struggle. God hears the one who confesses his weakness and asks for help to do what is right, and your desire to get up, to go to work, to be sober and to be kind is itself a work of His grace in you.

Scripture teaches that marriage is honorable and ordained by God, and that He desires peace and holiness within it. Holiness in marriage is shown in chaste and faithful love, in patience and kindness toward one another. It is not wine itself that is the master, but the use of it beyond measure and the purpose of the heart that turns to it for escape. God calls us to be sober and wakeful, and to do our part with diligence after He has given us His help. Christ is the one who frees us from the rottenness of sin, and our labor is then to not return to it again, but to be preserved in the freshness He gives.

I will pray for you and your wife in this way.

Heavenly Father, in the name of Jesus Christ Your Son, have mercy on this husband and wife. You alone are the way of salvation, and we ask You to draw them both closer to Christ and to strengthen their faith. Give them grace to turn away from drunkenness and to choose sobriety today. Take away the craving and keep them from withdrawal and harm, and give them wisdom to seek help from trusted pastors and from medical care and Christian community where needed. Help this brother to rise and to labor faithfully, to complete his projects and proposals and invoices with care and on time, and to do all his work as unto You. Soften his heart and the hearts of his bosses, coworkers, customers and his wife, and teach them both to be gentle and forgiving to one another. Do not let either wait for the other to move first, but give each the courage to seek reconciliation and to show love in word and deed. Make him a better husband and father and worker, not by his own strength alone, but by Your Spirit helping his own diligence. Guard their marriage, keep it pure and peaceful, and make their home a place of order and kindness. Grant them a good day today, step by step, and help them to persevere this week. Amen.

Take heart and take the next faithful step you have already named. Get up, go to work, and do the task in front of you. When temptation comes to stay in bed and drink until you pass out, call upon the Lord, reach out to your wife with a kind word, and reach out to a trusted brother or pastor or counselor who can walk with you both in person. If you face trembling or sickness from not drinking, please seek medical help promptly and do not try to endure it alone. God is pleased not only with great signs but with a faithful course of life, keeping His commandments day by day. He will give you strength to use your own wings as you look to Him, and He is able to keep you from falling back.

Thank you for sharing this honest prayer from your heart. Your willingness to be open about the struggle you and your wife are facing with alcohol, and your desire to change, to be kind to one another, and to be faithful in your work and family, is something God sees and hears.

In Scripture leprosy is often used as a picture of sin because it is a loathsome disease that slowly eats away at a person and no human cure could touch it. Only a divine work of God could cleanse a leper. Yet in the law God made provision for the leper in the day of his cleansing. Even though the disease was considered incurable, God left room for His own work. He did not put Himself in a box. That is remarkable. It shows that when God wants to heal and cleanse, He has already made a way for it to happen.

Alcohol can be like that. It slowly takes over, it affects your body, your marriage, your work, your desire to even get out of bed. You may feel as if it is incurable and that you have no control. But God has left room to work in your life. When the leper came to Jesus he said, if you are willing you can make me clean, and Jesus answered, I am willing, be clean. That same willingness is extended to you. God is willing to forgive, to cleanse, and to lift you out of what David described as the horrible pit and the miry clay, to set your feet on a rock and establish your steps. Whatever God does for you He does not do because you have earned it by fasting or by trying harder. It is not by works of righteousness that we have done, but by His grace alone. You cannot deserve His work, but you can give Him room to do it and trust Him to do it.

You showed that trust in a very practical way today. You said you want to stay in bed and drink until you pass out, but you will not do that. You will get your tired body up and go to work. That choice matters. There was a man with a withered hand who could have told Jesus all the reasons he could not move it, how he had no strength or control. Instead he willed to obey the command of Jesus when Jesus told him to stretch it out, and his brain sent the message again and his hand was restored. In the same way, you are willing to obey even while you feel weak. God honors that willingness. He has given to each person a portion of work to do and He calls us to watch and not be found sleeping when the Master comes. Getting up, going to work, doing your projects and proposals and invoices honestly and on time is part of that faithful watching.

I will pray for you and your wife together. I pray that God will do His cleansing and healing work in both of you, that He will give you a new desire for sobriety and for kindness toward one another, that He will soften hearts in your home and also among your bosses, coworkers and customers. I pray He will help you be the husband and father and worker He created you to be, and that He will restore love and gentleness in your marriage as you both turn to Him.

Please do not try to face possible withdrawal on your own. Alcohol withdrawal can be dangerous to your body, so please reach out right away for medical help as well as for pastoral and trusted Christian support and accountability. You need others around you who can walk with you, pray with you, and help you stay faithful day by day.

As God works in you, you will naturally want to share what He has done, just as those who were touched by Him could not help but tell others. Ask Him today for that fresh work of His Spirit and His grace in your life, and leave room for Him to do what only He can do.
