We hear the honesty and humility in your prayer and we join you in bringing it before the Lord Jesus Christ.

God is gracious and ready to forgive when we come to Him with a repentant heart. Scripture says if we confess our sins He is faithful and just to forgive us and to cleanse us. Your sorrow over drinking again after nearly a month of abstinence is not hidden from Him, and His mercy is greater than our failures. In Christ there is forgiveness and there is also power to walk in a new way.

We pray with you for today. We ask the Lord to give you clarity, diligence and strength to complete your proposal well and on time, and to do your work as unto Him. We ask Him to soften the hearts of your bosses, coworkers and customers, and to give you favor and peace in those relationships. We especially pray for your marriage, that God would draw you and your wife closer together in kindness, patience and mutual help as you grow older together. Marriage is honorable before God, and He delights when a husband and wife seek to be gentle and gracious to one another each day.

We also pray for your struggle with alcohol. It is not wine itself that is the master, but the misuse of it beyond measure that enslaves. When that struggle has become a stronghold, the wise path is to turn away completely and to seek strength outside yourself. We ask God to give you victory today when you return home, to give you a clear mind and a steady will to say no, and to surround you with help. Continue to call on Christ in that moment of temptation, and consider bringing other faithful people into this battle with you, whether a pastor, a trusted brother, a counselor or a recovery group, so you are not fighting alone. Each day of faithfulness is a gift from God and a step toward becoming the husband, father and employee He is calling you to be.

May the Lord lift the burden of guilt you feel and replace it with His peace, and may He help you and your wife to speak to each other with love and respect, bearing with one another and forgiving as Christ has forgiven you.

Father, we thank You for this brother who seeks You. Forgive his sins through the blood of Jesus. Grant him strength to complete his work today with excellence. Give him self control by Your Spirit and keep him from turning to alcohol tonight. Soften hearts in his workplace and in his home. Help him and his wife to be kind, tenderhearted and united, helping one another every day. Make him more like Christ for his family and for those he serves. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior. Amen.

Your honest and humble prayer is a blessing to read, and God hears the heart that comes to Him through Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.

You asked for forgiveness for drinking again after almost a month without it, and you said you feel really bad about it. That guilt is important to bring directly to God. When we sin, our sin is ultimately against God Himself, because He is the one who has given His commands. Another person can say they forgive us, but only God can grant forgiveness for sin against Him, and we must ask Him for it ourselves. The good news you have already confessed is that God has made one provision for that forgiveness, and that is through Jesus Christ alone. There is no other way for sin to be atoned for. The Scripture says God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. To turn away from Jesus and reject Him is the sin that has no forgiveness, but to come to Him as you have done, calling on Jesus as Lord and Savior, is the way to receive forgiveness. If you are sensitive to your sin and are asking God for help, you have not put yourself beyond His grace. Bring this struggle with alcohol to Him openly, confess it, and receive the forgiveness He offers in Christ, and ask Him for power to walk in a new way.

It is also good that you want to change and be a better husband, father and employee. Often we are tempted to pray mainly about the outward pressures, like a deadline, or that others will be softer toward us, or that circumstances will be easier. God does care about those daily needs, and it is right to ask Him for help with your proposal and with your relationships at work and at home. But His deeper work is in the heart itself, dealing with the root problem of sin and bringing real transformation, not just relief from symptoms. He wants to change us from the inside so that we can live differently.

That same heart change is what will help your marriage. God designed marriage so that two become one, a deep unity where two lives are joined together as one flesh. That oneness is meant to be lifelong, and growing older together is part of His purpose, learning each day to be kind, patient and helpful to one another. Asking God to help you and your wife be nice to each other and help each other is exactly in line with what He desires for a husband and wife.

I am praying for you, that God will give you strength and a clear mind as you work on your proposal and do your work well, that He will give you grace in your interactions with your bosses, coworkers and customers, and especially that He will strengthen you when you get home today to say no to alcohol. Ask Him for practical help as well, including honest accountability with trusted people who can support you and help you stay sober, and if needed wise counsel and medical help for this struggle. I am praying that you will know the assurance of His forgiveness through Jesus, that you will experience His power to live a new life, and that He will grow kindness and unity between you and your wife as you both look to Him each day.
