Servant of All
Dear God please help me and my wife to figure out what to do. We both have AUD and I have a lot of AWS . Thank you for giving me a wife and a son and a daughter and the many good but hard working jobs that I have had over many years to be able to support my family. I am am an old man and I am dealing with my AUD and my AWS. Please help my wife and our adult kid's to be able to take care of themselves with out me. I'm thinking about getting a divorce or a separation to not be around my wife anymore. I'm thinking about closing this down and going back to taking care of my self and living with my older brother who lives in ### just to be able to enjoy his company for what little time that we can have together. I did the best that I could have done and I really appreciate the opportunities that you have given me and my wife and our adult kid's. Please soften the hearts of my bosses and my coworkers and my customers and especially my wife. Even if I was not an alcoholic I think that I would still think and do what I have been doing for so many years. I use the alcohol as an excuse and a way to self medicate . Please help me get my projects and proposals done correctly and on time. Please help me to be able to keep my job and my marriage and to be able to help and support my wife and our adult kid's and my employer. Amen 🙏

We hear your heart, brother, and we come before the throne of grace with you in this moment of deep struggle. You are carrying a heavy burden, alcohol use disorder (AUD), alcohol withdrawal syndrome (AWS), the weight of years of hard work, and the fear of what the future holds for your marriage and family. But we want you to know this: your honesty before God is not weakness; it is the first step toward healing. You are not alone in this fight, and the Lord sees your pain, your efforts, and your love for your wife and children.

First, we must address the mention of divorce or separation with great care and biblical truth. Marriage is a sacred covenant before God, not just between two people but with Him as the foundation (Matthew 19:6). The enemy would love nothing more than to use this season of struggle to drive a wedge between you and your wife, but we must stand on the promise that God is able to restore what is broken. "For no temptation has overtaken you except what is common to man. God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but will with the temptation also make the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it" (1 Corinthians 10:13). Your marriage is worth fighting for, and we believe God can bring redemption even in this hard place.

Your struggle with alcohol is not just a physical battle but a spiritual one. The Bible warns us, "Don’t be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit" (Ephesians 5:18). Alcohol has become a false refuge for you, a way to numb pain or escape reality, but it cannot provide the true peace and healing that only Christ can give. We rebuke the lie that you are beyond help or that your best days are behind you. The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit (Psalm 34:18). He is not done with you, and He is not done with your marriage.

We also want to speak to the idea of leaving your wife and children to "take care of themselves." While we understand the exhaustion and despair that may lead to such thoughts, we must gently but firmly remind you that God calls husbands to love their wives as Christ loved the church (Ephesians 5:25). This is not a call to perfection but to perseverance, humility, and reliance on God’s strength. Your wife and children need you, not just as a provider, but as a husband and father who is present, even in weakness. If you leave, who will show them the love of Christ in the midst of this storm? Who will model repentance, grace, and the power of God to transform lives?

We encourage you to seek help, not just for yourself, but for your marriage. This may mean reaching out to a biblical counselor, a pastor, or a Christian recovery program that can walk with you and your wife through this season. The body of Christ is designed to bear one another’s burdens (Galatians 6:2), and there is no shame in asking for help. Your wife may also need support, and we pray that God would provide godly community for both of you. Isolation will only deepen the struggle, but fellowship with believers can bring hope and accountability.

As for your job and your responsibilities, we pray that God would give you clarity, focus, and the strength to fulfill your commitments. Proverbs 16:3 says, "Commit your deeds to the Lord, and your plans shall succeed." Even in the midst of withdrawal and temptation, God can sustain you and help you to honor Him in your work. But we also want to gently challenge the idea that alcohol is merely an "excuse" or a way to "self-medicate." While it may feel like a coping mechanism, it is ultimately a snare that leads to destruction (Proverbs 23:29-35). True healing comes from surrendering every part of your life, including your struggles, to Jesus Christ.

Now, let us pray together:

Heavenly Father, we come before You with heavy hearts, lifting up our brother and his marriage to You. Lord, You see the pain, the exhaustion, and the fear that he is carrying, and we ask that You would meet him in this place of struggle. We declare that You are the God who heals, the God who restores, and the God who makes all things new. We rebuke the spirit of addiction and despair in Jesus’ name, and we ask that You would break every chain that has bound him to alcohol. Fill him with Your Holy Spirit, Lord, and give him the strength to resist temptation and walk in freedom.

Father, we pray for his wife and their marriage. Soften her heart, Lord, and help her to see her husband through Your eyes, with grace, patience, and love. Give them both the humility to seek help and the courage to fight for their marriage. We ask that You would surround them with godly counsel and community, and that You would heal the wounds that alcohol and this struggle have caused. Help them to remember the vows they made before You, and give them the strength to honor those vows even in this difficult season.

Lord, we also pray for their adult children. Give them wisdom, peace, and the ability to care for themselves while also supporting their parents in a way that honors You. Protect their hearts from bitterness or fear, and let them see Your faithfulness even in the midst of this trial.

Father, we ask that You would sustain our brother in his job. Give him the focus, clarity, and strength to complete his tasks with excellence. Help him to see his work as an act of worship to You, and give him favor with his employers and coworkers. Provide for every need, Lord, and help him to trust in Your provision rather than in his own strength.

Finally, Lord, we ask that You would draw near to him in this season. Let him feel Your presence in a tangible way, and remind him that he is not defined by his struggles but by Your love for him. Give him hope for the future, and help him to see that You are still writing his story. We ask all of this in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, the name above every name, the One who has overcome the world. Amen.

Brother, we want to leave you with this encouragement: "The Lord is my strength and my shield. My heart has trusted in him, and I am helped. Therefore my heart greatly rejoices. With my song I will thank him" (Psalm 28:7). You are not alone, and your story is not over. God is with you, and He is able to do immeasurably more than you could ask or imagine (Ephesians 3:20). Keep fighting, keep seeking Him, and keep pressing into His grace. There is hope, and there is healing available to you through Jesus Christ.

Thank you for opening up to us. We can feel the weight you’re carrying and the genuine love you have for your family even as you wrestle with so much pain and exhaustion. You’ve worked hard all these years, and it’s clear you want to do the right thing, that matters.

Right now, the most urgent step is to care for your body during alcohol withdrawal. Those symptoms can be dangerous, so please see a doctor or go to a local emergency room to begin a medically safe detox. We’re not trying to alarm you; this is simply a practical way to protect the husband, father, and employee you still long to be. While you get that help, it may be wise to set aside thoughts of divorce or moving out. Divorce is like a death in the family, the grieving and fallout can last for years and touch everyone you love. In the middle of a crisis, our judgment is often clouded, and making permanent decisions can wait until you have a clearer head and steady support.

We hear you naming your drinking as a way to self-medicate and cope. That honesty is a gift. Underneath the addiction are real needs and struggles you’ve been carrying alone. You don’t have to figure them out by yourself. A Christian counselor, pastor, or a trusted mentor can walk with you, not to lecture, but to help you find the way forward step by step. Spending time with your older brother could be a comfort, but maybe start with a visit rather than a move, so your marriage isn’t set aside before you’ve had a chance to heal together.

God sees you. You are not too old, and your story is not over. He has not given up on you, and neither have we.

Lord, we lift our brother to You. Bring him safe medical care and steady companions. Calm his spirit and give him the courage to face what has driven him to drink. Protect his job, hold his marriage, and soften hearts all around him, his wife, his children, his coworkers, and his own. Let him know he is not alone. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Your words betray a man who, in his weariness, mistakes isolation for deliverance. You speak of closing down, of separating from the wife God has given you, of fleeing to your brother as though a change of place could cure a plague of the heart. Hear me plainly: the alcohol is not your excuse, it is your accuser. You say you would think and do as you have done even without it, then the root runs deeper still, down into the soil of self-will. Should it be according to your mind? Shall the Almighty adjust His government to suit your despair? You propose to abandon your post, yet it is precisely there, in the furnace of your present trial, that God would meet you.

Job longed for death, yet he did not unyoke himself from duty. He did not sin with his lips, nor charge God foolishly. He fell down and worshipped. You speak of praying for your wife’s heart to be softened, yet you contemplate the very act that would harden it beyond measure. The Lord turned the captivity of Job when he prayed for his friends, for the very ones who misjudged him. Your own release is bound up in pleading for her, not plotting escape from her. You ask God to help your children stand without you, but the truest help you can give them is to remain steadfast, a living testimony that grace can steady a staggering man.

You have forgotten what you yourself have known, that your bow can be renewed. Age is no barrier to the fresh oil of divine supply. Cast this thought of divorce behind you; it is a counsel of the adversary, who would see you bite the dust in defeat. Instead, lay hold upon the Lord, though He slay you. Say with Job, “I know that You will bring me to death,” yet meet that knowledge not with flight but with faith. Your projects and proposals will find their right order when your soul is ordered under God’s hand. Cease your striving against the Most High; accept His plan of salvation fully, which includes the sanctifying of your present sorrows. Go to your wife not with a paper of separation, but with the humble confession of a man who knows his own corruption and leans wholly upon Christ. Pray with her. Weep with her. Your captivity shall yet be turned, if you will but stand still and see the salvation of God.

May God in Jesus' name answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. God is so in love with you. Be Encouraged!

Psalm 37:4: Delight yourself in the Lord, And He shall give you the desires of your heart.
Matthew 6:33: But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.

God, all that I have asked of You, in this prayer, please do the same for the writer of the prayer, all those who love and care about me, and all those I love and care about. God, please forever honor this prayer over each of our lives. God Thank You. Amen, so be it by faith, and by faith, it is so
