Jesus Christ please help me

Dear God please help me and please forgive me for being a alcoholic again. I'm laying in my bed and it feels so good to rest and relax. I went down stairs this morning and I made myself a little drink of whiskey and sprite. I'm thinking of being a little bit late this morning to work so that I can enjoy my morning before I go to work because I have way too much work to do and I am very stressed out with anxiety and I just want a break. I'm sorry but I am getting old and tired of having to work so hard for many hours and days just to be able to support my wife and our adult kid's. If it was just for me I would be happy living in a van down by the river. Old Chris Farley saying on an old Saturday Night Live Show! I'm thankful for you giving me a good family and a good job. I'm just a little bit tired and worn out. Please give me the courage and the strength and the belief that I can keep this dog and pony show going for at least another 5 years! Amen 🙏

We hear your honest and weary heart in this prayer and we thank you for bringing it openly before the Lord. We understand that feeling of being tired and worn out from many years of hard work and the heavy burden of providing for your family, and we are grateful with you that God has given you a good family and good work. We also hear your stress and anxiety and your desire for rest, and we want to lift you up and also speak truth to you in love as we pray together in Jesus' name.

We want to gently but clearly address the drink you made this morning. We know you feel it helps you relax, but the Word of God warns us plainly about this path. Wine is a mocker and beer is a brawler. Whoever is led astray by them is not wise Proverbs 20:1 and we are told Do not be drunken with wine, in which is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit Ephesians 5:18. Alcohol may feel like rest for a moment, but it does not give true rest or true strength, and drunkenness is listed among the works of the flesh that keep us from inheriting the kingdom Galatians 5:21. We love you and we say this because we want to see you free. God offers forgiveness when we confess, If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness 1 John 1:9, but He also calls us to turn away and walk in self-control, which is part of the fruit of the Spirit Galatians 5:22-23. Choosing to be late for work to drink will not honor the Lord, your employer, or your family, and it will only add more stress and guilt. Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men Colossians 3:23.

We also hear your anxiety about having way too much work and feeling like you must keep this going for five more years in your own strength. The Lord does not want you to carry this alone. Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest Matthew 11:28. We are told to cast all our anxiety on him, because he cares for you 1 Peter 5:7 and In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus Philippians 4:6-7. Your desire to provide is noble and right, for If anyone does not provide for his own, and especially his own household, he has denied the faith 1 Timothy 5:8, yet God also promises He gives power to the faint. To him who has no might he increases strength Isaiah 40:29 and that those who wait for Yahweh will renew their strength Isaiah 40:31. You do not have to keep the show going in your own power. No temptation has taken you except what is common to man. God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted above what you are able, but will with the temptation also make the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it 1 Corinthians 10:13.

So we pray for you now together.

Father, we come before You in the name of Jesus Christ, thanking You for this brother who has humbled himself to ask for help and forgiveness. Lord, we ask You to forgive him for turning to alcohol for comfort and to cleanse him and deliver him from this bondage. Fill him instead with Your Holy Spirit and give him true rest and peace that only You can give. Take his anxiety and stress and exchange it for Your peace that guards his heart and mind. Give him courage and strength for each day, renew his strength as he waits on You, and help him to be diligent and faithful in his work as unto You. Help him to be honest with You, with his wife, and with others who can hold him accountable, perhaps a pastor or a trusted Christian brother or counselor, and give him wisdom regarding how to continue to provide for his household while also setting godly and healthy boundaries, especially with adult children. Help him to not grow weary in doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up Galatians 6:9. Sustain him, Lord, not just for five more years, but for all the days You have ordained for him, and let him find his joy and rest in You and not in the bottle. We ask this in the mighty name of Jesus, Amen.

We encourage you to take practical steps today in repentance and faith. Pour out what remains and do not keep alcohol easily available in the house. Tell your wife honestly what happened this morning and ask her to pray with you and help keep you accountable. Go to work on time and do your work faithfully even when you are tired, trusting God to honor that obedience. Seek fellowship and counsel from a Bible believing church, and if drunkenness has been a repeated struggle, seek ongoing Christian accountability and counseling. When the urge to drink comes with stress, go immediately to prayer and the Word instead, casting that care on Him. You are not alone and you are not without hope. God is able to keep you and strengthen you one day at a time.

We hear how tired and stretched you feel right now, and we appreciate your honesty in bringing this to God just as you are. Wanting a moment of rest before facing a long day of work, especially when you are carrying the weight of providing for your wife and family, is understandable. And feeling worn out after years of hard work does not mean you have failed.

We also hear that the whiskey this morning felt like a way to get a break from stress and anxiety. That desire for relief makes sense, but those short breaks often leave us more tired and more anxious afterwards, and make it harder to face the very pressures we want to escape.

You don't have to carry this alone for the next five years on your own strength. When alcohol and anxiety have become part of coping with stress, it helps to have people alongside you. If you have a trusted pastor, counselor, or your doctor, we encourage you to reach out to one of them soon, alongside prayer, to talk honestly about what you are experiencing at work and at home. Even one conversation with someone who knows you can be a steady next step, and sharing with your wife as you are able can keep you from isolating.

Father, we thank You for this brother, for his love for his family and his faithful work. You see his weariness and his desire to do what is right. We ask You to give him strength for today, wisdom for each decision, and courage to reach for support. Surround him with grace and guide his steps. In Jesus' name we pray, amen.

There is forgiveness with God, and that word is for you this very morning. You have come with a trembling and penitent heart desiring forgiveness, and the Lord meets such a heart not with a cold rebuke but with a surprising and complete forgiveness. Hear what He says, I, even I, am He that blotteth out thy transgressions for mine own sake. It is divine forgiveness, not the pardon of a man who may forgive a little, but the act of God Himself who can blot out sin as a thick cloud. Where He draws no limit, do not you draw any. There is forgiveness with Him that He may be feared, and that forgiveness is to be had now, through Jesus Christ His Son who died the Just for the unjust to bring us to God.

You have confessed truly that you have turned again to strong drink, taking whiskey in the morning to find rest. Do not deceive yourself that this is rest or relaxation. The Scripture warns us plainly that wine is a mocker and strong drink is raging, and drunkenness unfits a man for duty and for communion with God. What you call a little drink is a snare that would keep you from the true rest you seek. There is forgiveness for this sin, as for all sin, but that forgiveness is given that you may forsake it, not continue in it. As you believe in the forgiveness of sins for yourself through the blood of Christ, you must also turn from it with purpose of heart, confessing it before God without excuse and seeking help in the light, before a faithful pastor or a trusted brother, that you may be kept accountable and not fight this battle alone in your bedroom.

Your weariness and anxiety are also heard. You speak of being old and tired, of too much work and many hours to support your wife and your adult children, and of wanting to linger in bed and be late for work to steal a little ease. It is right to thank God for a good family and good work, and it is an honorable thing to labour to provide for your household. Yet have you not found that the very anxiety which arises through being in a difficulty unfits you to meet that difficulty. To tell yourself over and over of your stress, and to seek to quiet it with drink and with sloth, will bring no good. Rather do the indoor work of the soul, bless the Lord within your heart and cast all your care upon Him, for He careth for you. God has appointed your work, and He will give strength for it, but He is not honoured when we turn aside from duty to indulge the flesh.

You ask for courage and strength to keep going for another five years. God can give it, and He delights to give it not through whiskey and sprite but through His own grace. When you rest most in Christ, you will work best for Him. Come to Him just as you are, with nothing in your hands, pleading the name of His dear Son, and trust that He not only forgave you at the first but continues daily to forgive and to cleanse. Then rise, wash your face, and go to your labour faithfully and soberly, trusting Him for this day's strength, and for tomorrow when it comes. The Lord your God shall bless you in all that you do when you walk in His way.

May the Lord now grant you repentance and faith, deliverance from strong drink, quietness of heart in place of anxiety, and renewed strength to labour with honesty and love for your family. Seek Him at once, do not wait till you get home or till another morning, for now there is forgiveness, and now there is grace to help in time of need.
