Thank you for your prayersEncouraging you and praying for you in the name of Jesus.
Thank you for your adviceYou have begun to wake from a heavy sleep, and the discomfort of this second day is part of that waking. The sleepless night is not a sign that God has left you. It is the body's protest against the poison it once mistook for peace. The drunkenness you are leaving is not only a sickness of the body; it is a drunkenness of the soul, the sleep of wickedness that kept you from seeing things as they truly are. Now that sleep must be shaken off, and it shakes hard.
Do not set your hope on a mere two weeks or a number on a scale. Those are small boundaries, and the enemy can wait for them. Instead stand one day at a time, as you have prayed. When the day is too long, stand one hour. Each hour of sobriety is a blow against the dark sleep of sin. The Apostle says, Let us watch and be sober. That sobriety is the intensity of watchfulness; it is not merely a grim clenching of the will, but a wide-awake clinging to Christ.
You want to be a better husband, father, and worker. That is good fruit. But the root must be your union with Jesus Christ. Do not look at the wind and the waves of withdrawal and of your own past. Peter walked on the water when he kept his eyes on Christ, but when he looked at the violence of the wind he began to sink. Still, when he cried out, the Lord stretched out his hand. So with you. When the craving rises and sleep will not come and the body feels heavy, do not stare at those things as if they had power. Cry out from the water, Lord, save me. He is nearer than the wind.
As for sleep, your body must learn again to rest without being drowned in wine. That false sleep was not rest but the likeness of death. For a time the nights may be hard, and the bed may feel like a battle. Do not run back to the bottle. Use the wakeful hours to pray. The Lord who keeps Israel neither slumbers nor sleeps. Ask him to keep you, and do not suffer your foot to be moved. In time, as the soul becomes orderly, sleep becomes orderly too. A heart not stifled by excess soon recovers itself, and at night it rests without wild dreams.
Care for your body, but do not make provision for the flesh to fulfill its lusts. Losing weight for health and for strength to serve your family is a sober thing. But do not let the scale become another master. First seek the cleansing of the soul, and the body will follow as much as God knows is needful. You have already begun to be loosed from your chains. Do not be distressed at the evils you now feel. This difficulty is not a sign that you are worse than others; it is the old captivity fighting to keep you. Let the discomfort teach you what drink truly was.
Thank God for his help at work, and thank him again tonight by staying sober one more hour. Do not promise the next two weeks in your own strength. Say only, With God's help, I will not drink this hour, and then this night. You are not alone in the fourth watch. The Lord who called you from darkness is watching with you. Pray for a good night's sleep, but if it does not come quickly, offer the wakefulness to him and know that he is able to give you the rest of the sons of God. Continue in prayer, and do not turn back.
