Servant of All
Dear God please forgive me for my AUD. Please help me to not drink so much alcohol so that I don't damage my liver and my heart and my mind. Why do I drink too much every day and night. I lay on my bed and drink alcohol and pretend that it's going to be okay every day when I get home from work. I have been a functioning alcoholic for a long time and I hope that you can help me change. Please help me be a better husband and a better dad to our adult kid's and a better employee and to be able to have a better relationship with my wife. I want to go back home to lay on my bed and drink alcohol because I really don't want to be at work today. Please help me get my projects and proposals done correctly and on time. I wish that I could be able to retire and to relax at home. I hope that I can win the lottery soon. That would be great 👍. I promise to be a good steward with your money.

We hear the cry of your heart, and we come before the throne of grace with you, lifting up your struggles to the Lord. Your honesty about your alcohol use disorder (AUD) and the pain it is causing in your life, your marriage, and your work is a crucial first step. The Word of God tells us, "Confess your offenses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The insistent prayer of a righteous person is powerfully effective" (James 5:16). You are not alone in this battle, and we stand with you in prayer and support.

First, we must address the root of this struggle. Alcohol has become an idol in your life, a false comfort that you turn to instead of the Lord. Jesus warns us, "No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other; or else he will be devoted to one and despise the other" (Matthew 6:24). You have confessed your desire to drink when you return home, to escape work, and even to rely on the lottery for financial freedom. These are all signs that your heart is seeking fulfillment in things other than God. The apostle Paul reminds us, "All things are lawful for me, but not all things are expedient. All things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of anything" (1 Corinthians 6:12). Alcohol has taken power over you, and it is time to break its hold in the name of Jesus.

We rebuke the spirit of addiction in your life. The Bible tells us, "Be sober and self-controlled. Be watchful. Your adversary, the devil, walks around like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour" (1 Peter 5:8). The enemy wants to destroy your health, your family, and your witness, but we declare that greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world (1 John 4:4). You do not have to be a slave to this addiction any longer. Jesus came to set the captives free (Luke 4:18), and we claim that freedom for you today.

We also want to address your desire to win the lottery. While it is not a sin to play the lottery, relying on it for financial security is misplaced trust. The Lord calls us to work diligently and trust Him for our provision. "Let him who stole steal no more; but rather let him labor, working with his hands the thing that is good, that he may have something to give to him who has need" (Ephesians 4:28). Instead of hoping for a windfall, focus on being a good steward of what God has already entrusted to you. Seek His wisdom in managing your finances, and trust Him to meet your needs.

Now, let us pray for you:

Heavenly Father, we come before You in the mighty name of Jesus, lifting up this brother who is struggling with alcohol addiction. Lord, we thank You for his honesty and his desire to change. We ask that You would break the chains of addiction in his life. Fill him with Your Holy Spirit, that he may have the strength and self-control to resist the temptation to drink. Help him to turn to You for comfort and peace, rather than to alcohol.

Father, we pray for his marriage and his relationship with his wife. Restore the love, trust, and intimacy that may have been damaged by his addiction. Help him to be the husband You have called him to be, one who loves his wife as Christ loves the church (Ephesians 5:25). Give him the wisdom and patience to be a godly father to his adult children, leading by example and showing them Your love.

Lord, we also pray for his work. Give him the motivation, focus, and discipline to complete his projects and proposals on time and with excellence. Help him to find joy and purpose in his work, knowing that whatever he does, he should do it as unto You (Colossians 3:23). If it is Your will for him to retire, provide a way for that to happen in Your perfect timing.

Father, we ask that You would heal his body from the damage caused by alcohol. Strengthen his liver, his heart, and his mind. Renew his energy and his desire to live a healthy, sober life. Help him to find healthy ways to cope with stress and to find true rest in You.

Lord, we declare that this brother is more than a conqueror through Christ who loves him (Romans 8:37). We rebuke the spirit of addiction and command it to leave his life in the name of Jesus. Fill him with Your peace, Your joy, and Your hope. Help him to walk in the freedom that Christ has won for him on the cross.

We pray all these things in the precious and powerful name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. Amen.

We encourage you to take practical steps to overcome this addiction. Seek out a Christian counselor or a support group like Alcoholics Anonymous, where you can find accountability and encouragement. Surround yourself with godly men who can pray for you and walk alongside you in this journey. Memorize Scripture that speaks to your struggle, such as 1 Corinthians 10:13: "No temptation has taken you except what is common to man. God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted above what you are able, but will with the temptation also make the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it."

Remember, the battle is not yours alone. The Lord is fighting for you, and He will give you the victory if you trust in Him. Keep your eyes fixed on Jesus, the author and perfecter of your faith (Hebrews 12:2). He is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that you ask or think (Ephesians 3:20). You can overcome this addiction, and we are here to support you every step of the way.

We hear the exhaustion in your words, the way you describe lying on the bed, pretending everything's okay, and just wanting the day to be over. That's a heavy weight to carry, and we're glad you reached out.

What stands out is how much you long for change. You've named it clearly: you want to be a better husband, a better dad to your adult kids, a dependable employee. Those desires aren't random, they point to the man you genuinely want to be. That matters.

Many people who struggle with alcohol for years find that wanting to stop, by itself, isn't quite enough. The patterns are old, the relief is real in the moment, and the pull is powerful. So one of the most courageous and practical steps you could take this week is simply to let someone else into this with you, not just here online, but in person. That might mean walking into a recovery group meeting, or calling a doctor for an honest conversation about your liver and heart. You mentioned damage you're worried about, and a checkup could give you a clear picture and some accountability, not shame, just truth you can work with. You don't need to figure out all the "why" right now. You just need to break the isolation.

At the same time, the lottery dream and the wish for retirement sound like a deep ache for rest, a longing for life to feel different without all the pressure. That's understandable. But the change you're really hoping for, in your relationships and your sense of self, won't come from a windfall. It will come one day, one honest choice at a time.

Lord, you see this man right where he is, tired, honest about his drinking, and wanting to change. Give him the courage to take one small, tangible step this week. Bring someone into his life he can talk to face to face. Help him begin to find the rest and healing he's been looking for in all the wrong places. Protect his body, his marriage, and his work. We ask this in Jesus' name.

The cry that springs from a terror of consequences is not yet that repentance which the Spirit works. You dread a damaged liver, a wounded heart, a shattered mind, and it is well to fear the pit, for it is deep. But judgment-born sorrow, however bitter, washes the outside of the cup while leaving the inside full of uncleanness. True repentance gives God glory. It does not merely weep over a diseased body or a fractured home; it abhors the sin itself because it is committed against so holy, so good, so glorious a Being. Ask your own soul: do you loathe the sin because it dishonors the Christ who died for such sin? Or do you chiefly lament its earthly wages?

You speak of lying upon your bed, drowning weariness in the bottle, pretending that all will be well. That pretense is the opiate of a soul that has not yet found its rest in Jesus Christ. You dream of a lottery, a windfall that would let you retire and escape your labors. Ah, but a thousand fortunes could not buy one drop of true peace. The thirst that drives you to the glass is a thirst no creature can slake. The Son of God cried, “If any man thirst, let him come unto Me and drink.” Have you come? Or are you still digging broken cisterns that hold no water?

You promise to be a good steward if God will give you riches. But this is to bargain with the Almighty, not to bow before Him. The deliverance wrought at Calvary comes with silver and gold, the unsearchable riches of Christ, but it begins by stripping us of all self-trust. Your resolutions, your promises, your own strength are cords of sand. The Lamb must be slain. Not a drop of self-righteousness may mingle with the blood of the Paschal sacrifice. He brought Israel forth when the lamb was slain, and He brings no sinner forth from the prison of his lusts by any other door.

The least thing about Christ is healing. The very leaves of that Tree are for the healing of the nations. His name is the cure for your soul’s disorder, but you must take Him as your sole medicine. He does not merely patch up the old nature; He creates a clean heart, He renews a right spirit within. That blessed exchange, His righteousness for your rags, His peace for your shame, is the fountain where true repentance and remission of sins meet together. Have you that repentance which leads you to look out of self to Christ, and to Christ only?

Ask yourself whether this sorrow over drinking is practical and abiding. Does it breed hatred of the sin itself, or only of its penalties? Does it fling you upon the wounded side of Jesus, or only upon your bed in despair? The repentance that needs not to be repented of is a rainbow, glistening with tears of grief for sin and radiant with glances of hope at the love of Christ and His great finished work. That hope is not found in a lottery ticket, nor in a pillow soaked with wine, nor in a quiet retirement from your labors. It is found in the cleft Rock, where the soul hides and is satisfied.

Go not about to mend your own case until you have first laid hold of the Deliverer. He brings forth prisoners with silver and gold, bestowing peace that this world cannot give, but He begins by making them willing in the day of His power. Abandon the pretense that anything short of a new heart will avail. Confess that you are as powerless as a stone to rise from your despondency. Then look to the Ransom. God himself has found it. The blood of Jesus Christ cleanses from all sin. Take that blood as your plea, that righteousness as your robe, that Spirit as your sanctifier, and you shall find a deliverance more wonderful than Israel’s from the iron furnace.

May God in Jesus' name answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. God is so in love with you. Be Encouraged!

Psalm 37:4: Delight yourself in the Lord, And He shall give you the desires of your heart.
Matthew 6:33: But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

Your cry reveals a soul entangled in chains you have forged, yet you ask God for help even as you cling to the very flame that consumes you. Do not say, “Why do I drink too much every day and night,” as if some foreign power compels you. The will that lit this fire can, with God’s grace, extinguish it. You are not a helpless puppet; you are a man made in the image of God, and the same choice that brought you low can raise you up, if you would only see clearly what you are doing. You lie on your bed and pour down ruin, pretending all will be well, but that is the deceit of a pleasure that perishes even as it is grasped. Consider what you lose: your liver, your heart, your mind, these are gifts you are destroying. And for what? A fleeting numbness that leaves behind sharper sorrow and heavier chains. You say you want to be a better husband, a better father, a better worker. Then stop looking for comfort in a bottle that only steals the very things you long to restore. The health you seek is not partial, like the old circumcision that mended a single part; you have made yourself wholly undone, and you need the whole man to be made healthy. Judge not by appearances: your daily routine appears to function, but inside you are perishing. True health comes when you turn from this false remedy and seek the Physician who alone can make you whole.

You say, “I wish I could retire and relax at home,” and “I hope I can win the lottery soon.” What is this but a thirst for ease that has already led you into drunkenness? You imagine that if you had money, you would be a good steward. But do not deceived yourself: the love of wealth is another furnace, and if you cannot master a smaller craving, how will you stand against the greater? Many who won sudden riches found them not a blessing but a curse, because their souls were not prepared. The rich man in the parable was not condemned for having wealth, but for lacking pity and for trusting in his possessions. True poverty is not an empty wallet; it is a heart always craving more. You are poor right now, not because you lack money, but because your soul is famished for contentment and virtue. Cast out the desire for a lottery win as you would cast out the craving for drink, for both springs from the same root, the belief that something outside you can fill the emptiness within. It cannot. Even if you gained the whole world, you would still lie on your bed in misery unless you first change your disposition. The apostle worked whether in plenty or in want, and virtue shone in every state. So can it shine in you, at your job, in your home, with your adult children, whether you are rich or poor, whether you retire or not. The work of the Lord is your true labor: being a faithful husband, a patient father, a diligent employee. That is where your reward lies, not in a fortune that moth and rust corrupt.

You ask for forgiveness, and well you should, for your sin is not only against your own body but against those who love you. Yet hear this: when you come seeking mercy for yourself, do not harbor bitterness against anyone. Have you been wronged? Have you been disappointed? Forgive as you hope to be forgiven. Nothing closes the door of heaven more quickly than a heart that refuses to release the faults of others. If you spend your prayer time recounting what others owe you, you will recall your own debts to mind, and they are many. Instead, pray for those who have injured you; then you will have boldness to ask for your own cleansing. And do not think your sins are too great. The woman with the hemorrhage did not shrink back in despair; she pressed through the crowd, touched the edge of His garment, and was healed. She did not say, “I am too unclean,” or “He will not receive one like me.” She saw the company He kept, sinners, publicans, and she took courage. So you, in all your defilement, approach Christ not with a presumptuous promise to be a good steward of money He never gave you, but with a broken heart that says, “Lord, if You will, You can make me whole.” He does not wait for you to be clean; He makes you clean. But you must do more than lie in bed and pretend. Rise up in your will, though your body craves the ruinous comfort. Set before yourself the vanity of this world’s pleasures, the unprofitableness of wealth, the fleeting nature of ease, and the surpassing worth of a soul at peace with God. No lottery win, no retirement, no earthly circumstance can bestow that peace. Only virtue, rooted in the fear of the Lord, can make you rich. Be not like the rich man who saw Lazarus only when it was too late. See now your true condition, and do the work of the Lord in your own household and workplace. Your wife, your children, your employer, these are the ones to whom you owe a debt of love. Serve them with a sober mind, and you will find that the refreshing you sought in drink was always a lie. The living water that Christ gives quenches every thirst for good. Turn to Him, and He will give you rest.
