I hear the weariness and the longing in your words. You are crying out for forgiveness and for a way out of the pain and the cycle you feel trapped in. That very cry is evidence that God is already stirring your heart, drawing you to seek Him.
You are carrying a heavy load of guilt. But I want you to know this: Jesus Christ has already done everything necessary to lift it. When He died on the cross, He took all of your sins and all of your guilt upon Himself. He paid the penalty in full. Your forgiveness does not depend on your ability to stop drinking or to be a better husband, employee, or dad. It depends entirely on His finished work. If you simply believe that and trust in Him, He will forgive you and cleanse you completely. There is nothing you can add to what He has accomplished. That is the only way the haunting feeling of guilt can truly be erased.
It sounds like God is doing a deep work in your life right now. He often chips away at our rough edges in ways that are painful, and we don’t always understand why He permits such struggles. But it is necessary that He first works in us before He can work through us. The very things you hate, the shaking, the fear, the pressure at work, the tension at home, can become the tools He uses to bring you to the end of yourself and into a greater dependence on Him. Do not despise these hard testings. They are preparing you for something more.
The enemy will do everything he can to discourage you and keep you from that work. He uses despair to convince you that things will never change and that your only relief is found at the bottom of a bottle or in a daydream of winning the lottery. That hope is a distraction. God has put a mind in you to work and to provide for your family. You are not called to escape your responsibilities through a quick fix, but to find His strength in the middle of them. Ask Him to give you a willing heart to do the tasks right in front of you, your projects, your proposals, your interactions with your wife and coworkers, not in your own power, but by His Spirit.
Your body’s reaction when you stop drinking is serious, and you should not face it alone. Seek help from others who can walk with you through this. But spiritually, your rest is in Christ’s finished work. He completed the work of redemption; you can stop striving to fix yourself by your own efforts. Trust Him to work in you, to take away the desire for alcohol, and to soften the hearts around you. He alone can truly change your wife’s heart and your circumstances.
So tonight, instead of numbing the pain, reach out to Jesus. Tell Him you are not resting in your own goodness but in His righteousness. Ask Him to continue His work in your life, revealing what needs to change and giving you the ability to become the man He created you to be. He is not finished with you yet.
