Jesus Christ please help me

Let me speak plainly to your soul, for these groans do not fall on deaf ears, neither in heaven nor on earth. The peace you tasted with your wife this evening, however brief, that is the very fruit of the Spirit, the sweetness of unanimity which is our greatest safety. Do not despise it because it seems small. The teacher rejoiced when his children were of one mind, for this overcomes every enemy and distraction. Cultivate that momentary kindness as the most precious bloom in your home. Its beauty is not like the fading charm of outward things, which anxiety and age so quickly wither. The Lord is at hand; let that gentleness be your ornament.

You speak of sleep that flees and eyes grown heavy, and you reach for another drink to quiet the racing mind. But consider the root, not just the symptoms. The anxieties of your work, the proposals and deadlines, the crafty general contractor, these are weights you were never meant to carry alone, nor drown in a glass. You say the job has disaster written on it and you wish things were easier. Yet what did the Apostle teach from his own chains? That the things which seem adverse, even bonds and troublous projects, can fall out rather unto the progress of the Gospel, and our own growth in faith, if we meet them rightly. The pain is not in the bonds, but in a divided and anxious mind. Do not flee the difficulty by wishing the proposal refused; instead, do your work with the integrity of a man who pleases God, not the greedy schemer. Fulfill your duty with honest excellence, and leave the outcome to the One who foretells us all things so we meet nothing unwarned. If the work is yours to do, do it as unto the Lord, asking no question born of fear for tomorrow.

And there is a sharper mercy here. You pray for your own ease, yet the blessed Paul chose to perish of hunger rather than be a stumbling block, and counted it no great work to exercise high disciplines if he neglected care for others. Even so, my brother, though you feel stretched to breaking, your chief work is not the proposal, but the souls within your reach. Your wife, your coworkers, your children, these are the ones for whom you watch. It does little good to seek spiritual consolations or even a peaceful night if you are not also binding mercy and true faith about your neck as an ornament never put off. You asked for help to be a better husband and father. This is the very path: to lay aside the cup that offers a false truce with anxiety, a pleasure that brings greater mischief than the pain it numbs, and instead to pour yourself out in patient, sober, steadfast love. The enemy inflames your desire for escape, but the Spirit strengthens you for the long race. You have only begun some heats; do not faint now by seeking relief in what cannot truly relieve. Stand firm. The God who made the sun rise on your home this morning is ready to grant you not ease, but something far stronger: a conscience at peace and a heart made capable of enduring all things through Him who strengthens you.

Your cry for help has been heard, and the very fact you're reaching out in prayer shows the Spirit is already at work in you. That sense that things will be okay? That's not wishful thinking. It's the quiet confidence that comes from knowing your life is hidden in Christ. He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day He returns.

The relief you felt with your wife tonight is a glimpse of what God is doing. But remember that a peaceful home isn't something you can manufacture by sheer will. It flows from the Spirit's work in both of you, something that grows as you stay attached to the vine, not as you strive to produce fruit on your own. An apple doesn't strain to ripen; it just remains connected to the tree. Keep abiding in Him, and that fruit of gentleness and patience will keep forming, even when the edges feel rough.

I want to speak plainly about the beer and the late night. You're exhausted, and your mind is racing, but alcohol will only deepen the sleep that isn't rest. Scripture calls us to be alert and sober, not because God is waiting to strike, but because the night is far spent and the day is at hand. The enemy would love nothing more than to dull your spirit with anxiety, then numb it with a drink. You belong to the light, so put on the helmet of hope and the breastplate of faith and love. When your brain won't shut off, instead of reaching for another bottle, try speaking the promises of God aloud in the dark: “I lay down and slept; I woke again, for the Lord sustained me.” Your body may still feel tired, but your heart will be guarded.

About that proposal: it's clear you dread the idea of being trapped in a project that's poorly engineered, with a general contractor known for taking advantage of people. Your instinct to avoid a disaster isn't cowardice; it's wisdom. But let me encourage you to bring this to the Lord without trying to manipulate the outcome. Pray something like, “Father, I submit this to You. If it's Your will for me to take this on, give me the strength and the strategy. If not, I trust You to close the door, and I trust You to handle the fallout with the client.” Our impatience so often gets in the way of God's work. When we try to force a result or manage our reputation, we quench the Spirit's leading. Do your due diligence, prepare the proposal with integrity, and then leave the acceptance in His hands. He sees the whole picture, including that contractor's heart.

Your work is stressful, and you carry heavy burdens. But remember that your ultimate acceptance doesn't come from perfect projects or even from being a flawless husband, father, or employee. If it did, you'd be crushed under the weight. You are accepted in the Beloved because of His finished work, not yours. Yet, while He accepts you completely now, He is also doing a refining work in you, chipping off those clumsy edges, as you've probably noticed. That process can be painful, and we often wince when the chisel lands. But count it as a gift when He shapes your character through the pressure, because that's how He prepares you to be an instrument He can use. The goal isn't an easier life; it's a life that displays His works to a watching world.

As for being a better husband and dad, start by resting in the truth that you are already a new creation. The Spirit isn't quenched by honest struggle, but He can be grieved by bitterness, resentment, or clinging to what you know is not best. When you feel the friction with your wife, don't let the sun go down while anger simmers. That quiet evening you had, build on it not by trying harder, but by dying to self. In the Bible's picture of marriage, love isn't merely a feeling; it's a daily choice to wash your spouse with the water of the Word and to lay down your life. That's the kind of love that reflects Jesus.

I know the days feel long and the nights too short. But the night is coming when no one can work. While you have breath, there is work to do, the works of the Father, done in dependence on Him. Not to earn His favor, but because He is already smiling on you in Christ. Go to that appointment tomorrow in His strength. Do the next small thing with quiet diligence. And if you're ever unsure, just hang on. Wait long enough, and you'll see God work things out in ways you never could have orchestrated. He is faithful. You will be okay, not because your circumstances will all be easy, but because He has already overcome the world.
