Jesus Christ please forgive me

Your honesty in sharing such deep pain is heard, and thank you for reaching out instead of staying silent with these thoughts. The feelings you describe, regret about marriage and family, the sense that your wife and adult children would have been better off with someone else, the exhaustion and the thought of checking out, and saying goodbye, all point to a very heavy burden. You are not alone in feeling that weight, and God sees you in this moment.

Much of what you are carrying sounds like guilt and a sense of failure that has settled over everything. Guilt has a way of creating a cycle. A person feels inferior or frustrated, tries to escape, then feels guilty, then even desires punishment to feel free from that guilt for a little while, only to return to frustration again. It can feel like there is no way out and that punishment is the only relief. There is also a deep hopelessness that comes when you look only at circumstances, at the past you wish you could change and at the present that feels trapped and dark. In that place it is natural to think, my strength and my hope are gone.

The good news of the gospel speaks directly to that cycle. Justice is getting what we deserve, mercy is not getting what we deserve. On the cross Jesus took upon himself all of our sin and guilt and paid the penalty for it. No counselor or technique can erase guilt at its root, but God can. When a person acknowledges the truth about his sin and failure before God, without trying to cover or hide it, God offers complete forgiveness and cleansing to those who trust in Jesus. David knew this after trying to cover his own guilt. He described his sin as always before him and his whole being weighed down, until he confessed it openly to God. Then he knew what it was to have that heavy hand lifted, to be restored in relationship with God, and to hear joy and gladness again. That relief, to know the guilt is taken away and you no longer have to bear it, is something only God can give, and he does it freely when we come to him.

Hopelessness also lifts when your eyes move from your circumstances to the Lord himself. When you look only at the world and at your own failures, despair grows. When you look to God, you remember what is true about him. He is faithful, he is compassionate, his mercies are new every morning. Nothing happens outside his knowledge and care, and he remains in control even when life feels out of control. The prophet who once said his hope had perished found hope again not because his situation immediately changed, but because he remembered the character of God. That same God is present with you now, and he is able to minister to your heart, to give perspective, and to bring hope where there was only darkness.

Please do not stay alone with the thought of checking out. That thought is a sign to reach out for help right now. If you are in danger of harming yourself, please tell someone near you immediately, a family member, a trusted friend, a pastor or counselor, or go to your nearest emergency department, or call or text a crisis helpline where you live. You do not have to carry this alone, and you do not have to punish yourself to be free from guilt. Jesus has already borne the punishment.

God has not finished with your life. He is able to forgive what you regret, to lift the weight of guilt, and then to instruct you and guide you in the way you should go. He cares for your wife and your adult children, and he also cares for you and has purpose for you still among them. Even if you feel you have failed as a husband and father, God's mercy can bring healing to you and through you to them, not through your absence but through your continued life and repentance and love.

I am praying for you, that you will sense God's mercy and compassion today, that you will confess honestly to him and receive his forgiveness through Jesus Christ, that the heavy burden will be lifted, and that hope will return as you look to him. I am also praying for your wife and children, that God will guard and help them and draw your family toward healing. Please reach out for help today and let someone know you need support.
