We hear your heartfelt cry to the Lord, and we join you in lifting these burdens before Him. Your desire to honor God with your body, mind, and marriage is commendable, and we stand with you in prayer, seeking His strength and wisdom for every step ahead.
First, we want to affirm your commitment to sobriety and self-control. Scripture tells us, "Or don’t you know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit which is in you, which you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. Therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s" (1 Corinthians 6:19-20). Your decision to abstain from alcohol is not just a personal victory, it is an act of worship to the One who redeemed you. We pray that God will continue to fill you with His Spirit, granting you the fruit of self-control (Galatians 5:22-23) so that you may walk in freedom from addiction. The trembling and sweating you describe are real battles, but we declare over you that "He who calls you is faithful, who will also do it" (1 Thessalonians 5:24). We pray for deep, restorative sleep tonight, that you may rise tomorrow renewed in body and spirit, free from the grip of withdrawal.
Your concern for your wife and son is a reflection of Christ’s love, but we must gently address the reality of their choices. While we pray for their hearts to be softened, we cannot ignore the truth that their habits, drinking, smoking, and substance use, are not only harmful to their bodies but also grieve the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 4:30). Scripture is clear: "Do not be deceived: ‘Bad company corrupts good morals’" (1 Corinthians 15:33). Your wife and son are not your "projects" to fix, nor can you control their decisions. What you can do is set a godly example, pray fervently, and speak truth in love when the Lord opens the door. We encourage you to release them into God’s hands, trusting that "the Lord’s hand is not shortened, that it can’t save; nor His ear dull, that it can’t hear" (Isaiah 59:1). Pray for their salvation and sanctification, but also guard your own heart, lest their choices drag you back into bondage.
Your marriage is sacred, and we pray that God will restore unity and intimacy between you and your wife. The Bible calls husbands to love their wives "just as Christ also loved the assembly, and gave Himself up for it" (Ephesians 5:25), and wives are called to respect their husbands (Ephesians 5:33). The disparity in your lifestyles, your sobriety versus her drinking, creates a spiritual and emotional divide. We urge you to seek godly counsel, perhaps through a pastor or Christian marriage ministry, to navigate this with wisdom. Pray for opportunities to share your heart with her, not in condemnation, but in love, pointing her to the freedom found in Christ. And if she is open, invite her to join you in prayer and Scripture, that she might see the joy of a life surrendered to God.
For your daughter, we lift her needs before the Lord, trusting that He knows every detail of her life. "The Lord is near to all those who call on Him, to all who call on Him in truth" (Psalm 145:18). We pray for her protection, provision, and peace, whatever her circumstances may be.
Finally, we rejoice that you have called on the name of Jesus Christ, your Lord and Savior. There is no other name by which we are saved (Acts 4:12), and it is only through Him that we have access to the Father (John 14:6). Your faith in Him is the foundation of every victory you seek. As you continue to walk in obedience, remember that "He who began a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ" (Philippians 1:6).
Let us pray together:
Heavenly Father, we come before You with hearts full of gratitude for Your faithfulness. We thank You for the work You are doing in [this brother’s] life, for his desire to honor You with his body, his marriage, and his family. Lord, we ask that You would strengthen him with power through Your Spirit in his inner being (Ephesians 3:16), that he may stand firm against temptation and walk in the freedom You have purchased for him. Heal his body from the effects of addiction, grant him restful sleep, and fill him with Your peace that surpasses all understanding (Philippians 4:7).
Father, we lift up his wife and children to You. Soften their hearts to receive Your truth, and draw them to repentance and salvation. Break the chains of addiction in their lives, and replace their desires with a hunger and thirst for righteousness (Matthew 5:6). Give [this brother] wisdom and discernment as he navigates his relationships, that he may speak the truth in love and set godly boundaries where needed.
Lord, we also pray for his work, soften the hearts of his bosses, coworkers, and customers. Grant him favor and success in his projects and proposals, that Your name may be glorified through his labor. And for his daughter, we ask that You would meet her every need according to Your riches in glory (Philippians 4:19).
Above all, we pray that You would be glorified in this family. May they see Your hand at work and respond with faith, obedience, and worship. We ask all these things in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. Amen.
