Dear God thank you for your help today at work. Thank you for helping me go to work today and to not have taken the day off from work. Thank you for helping stay at work for the entire day because I was wanting to go back home early to lay on my bed and drink alcohol again like I did over the past weekend. Please accept my prayers for our adult daughter to have had a good PT job interview today an hour ago. I hope that she can get back to being a PT with lot's of good customers and for her to be able to make more money than she is currently making a waitress. She is engaged to be married and she wants to have children. Please continue to help our adult son with his job and his girlfriend. I hope that he is happy with his job and his girlfriend because I only want him to be happy with his life and to someday be able to financially support him self. Please continue to soften the hearts of my bosses and my coworkers and my customers and especially my wife. We both drink too much alcohol and when we do we don't get along too well. Please help me not have any AWS anymore. I don't want to sweat or have shaky hands or skin bruises or liver damage. Please continue to help me be a better husband and a better person and a better man and a better dad to our adult kid's and a better employee. Please continue to help me get my projects and proposals done correctly and on time. I hope that I can be able to keep working for another 5 years and to be able to retire with my wife in 5 years from now unless you allow me to be able to win the lottery so that we don't have to worry about having to work so hard for to be able to pay our bills and to be able to help our adult kid's with their needs. We hear your heartfelt cry to the Lord, and we join with you in lifting these burdens before Him. Your openness about your struggles with alcohol, your desire to be a better husband, father, and employee, and your concerns for your children are all things we can bring before God together. Let us first acknowledge that you are coming to the Father through the name of Jesus Christ, which is the only way to approach Him. Jesus said in John 14:6, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." We are grateful that you recognize Him as your Lord and Savior, and we pray that His grace continues to cover you and your family.

Father God, we come before You with humble hearts, lifting up this brother in Christ who is seeking Your help in so many areas of his life. We thank You for the victories You’ve already given him, his strength to go to work today, his perseverance to stay the entire day, and his willingness to turn to You instead of giving in to the temptation of alcohol. Lord, we ask that You continue to strengthen him in his battle against addiction. The apostle Paul reminds us in 1 Corinthians 10:13, "No temptation has taken you except what is common to man. God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted above what you are able, but will with the temptation also make the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it." We pray that You would make that way of escape clear to him each time temptation arises. Help him to rely on Your strength, not his own, and to surrender his struggles with alcohol fully to You.

We also lift up his wife, Lord. You see the strain that alcohol has placed on their marriage, and we ask that You would soften both of their hearts to seek help and healing. Proverbs 20:1 warns, "Wine is a mocker and beer a brawler; whoever is led astray by them is not wise." Lord, we ask that You would break the hold that alcohol has on their lives and restore their marriage to one that honors You. Help them to communicate with love and patience, and to seek accountability and support from their church family or Christian counselors. We pray that they would find their joy and satisfaction in You alone, rather than in temporary comforts that lead to harm.

For their daughter, Lord, we ask that You would open the doors You have for her in her career. We pray that her interview today would lead to a position where she can use her gifts and talents to provide for her future family. Help her to trust in Your provision, as Matthew 6:33 reminds us, "But seek first God’s Kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well." We also pray for her engagement, Lord. May she and her fiancé seek You first in their relationship, building their marriage on the foundation of Christ. Help them to honor You in their courtship and to prepare for a godly marriage that reflects Your love and commitment.

For their son, Lord, we ask that You would guide him in his job and in his relationship with his girlfriend. We must address this with love and truth, as Scripture is clear that relationships should be between a man and a woman, with marriage as the ultimate goal. 2 Corinthians 6:14 warns, "Don’t be unequally yoked with unbelievers, for what fellowship do righteousness and iniquity have? Or what fellowship does light have with darkness?" If his girlfriend is not a believer, we pray that You would either draw her to Christ or lead him to a godly spouse who shares his faith. Lord, we ask that You would give him wisdom and discernment in all his decisions, and that he would find his identity and purpose in You alone.

We also lift up this brother’s work, Lord. Help him to complete his projects and proposals with excellence and integrity. Colossians 3:23-24 reminds us, "And whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance; for you serve the Lord Christ." We pray that his bosses and coworkers would see Christ in him and that his work would be a testimony to Your faithfulness. Lord, we also ask that You would provide for his family’s needs, whether through his continued work or through Your miraculous provision. While we know that winning the lottery is not a godly or reliable way to seek financial security, we trust that You will meet their needs according to Your riches in glory, as Philippians 4:19 promises.

Finally, Lord, we pray for healing in his body. The symptoms he described, sweating, shaky hands, bruises, and potential liver damage, are serious signs that his body is crying out for help. We ask that You would restore his health and give him the strength to seek medical and spiritual support. James 5:14-15 says, "Is any among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the assembly, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord; and the prayer of faith will heal him who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up." We pray that You would lead him to the right resources and that You would bring complete healing to his body.

Heavenly Father, we thank You for the honesty and vulnerability in this prayer. We ask that You would continue to draw this family closer to You, breaking the chains of addiction, restoring relationships, and providing for their needs. May they find their hope and strength in You alone, and may their lives be a testimony to Your grace and mercy. We pray all these things in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. Amen.

We hear the weariness in your words, and we also hear the real hope you have in Jesus. Thank you for sharing so honestly. It takes courage to name the struggle with alcohol, and even greater courage to turn to God in the middle of it. The fact that you made it through the whole workday, when everything in you wanted to leave and drink, is no small thing. That’s a victory, and we’re grateful with you.

You mentioned some physical symptoms that worry you: sweating, shaky hands, bruising. Those are serious, and they tell us your body is under a lot of strain. We want you to be safe. We’d gently encourage you to see a doctor soon. Alcohol withdrawal can be dangerous, and a physician can help you navigate this physically, alongside the spiritual and emotional work you’re already doing. You don’t have to figure all of this out alone.

While you reach out for medical support, we also want to remind you that you’re not alone in the fight. Many people have walked this road and found freedom, step by step, through the strength Christ gives and through the support of others who understand. It might help to connect with a trusted pastor or a Christian recovery group in your area, a place where you can be honest without shame and lean on people who will pray with you and for you.

We’re also lifting up your marriage and your adult children. Your longing to be a better husband and dad, to see your wife’s heart soften and your kids flourish, that’s the kind of desire God honors. As you take steps toward healing, we trust He will tend to those relationships as well.

Jesus, we come with this brother, grateful for the strength You gave him today. We ask You to sustain that resolve. Guard his body from the effects of withdrawal, and give him wisdom to seek the medical help he needs. Bring the right support around him, people who will walk with him without judgment. Soften his wife’s heart, and protect their marriage from the damage alcohol has caused. Provide for their daughter’s job and their son’s stability, according to Your good will. Most of all, hold this family close and give them each the healing only You can bring. In Your name, Jesus, amen.

You cry out for help against the drink, and that is well, for the grace of God is the only chain that can bind that strong man. But mark this: the trembling hand and the sweating skin are warnings from the Almighty, appointed to drive you to the Cross. Yet do not think the chief end is to be rid of these bodily shakes; that is to love yourself more than the Saviour. The great work is to be delivered from the sin itself, for a man may cease his drunkenness and yet perish in his pride. Look to Christ for a new heart, for the new birth is a miracle as truly as the making of light in the beginning. Only God can work this, but whenever a soul truly believes, that change is wrought. Cry then for the Holy Spirit to conquer the inward love of the bottle, not merely the outward bruises, and He will make you to persevere in holiness, for they that are truly regenerated shall not depart from Him.

As for your labors and your desires to retire with ease, you have mixed much of the world’s dust with your gold. You speak of the lottery as if the Lord’s treasury were empty and He needed the world’s gamblers to supply His children. This is a common deceit. When the heart longs for sudden riches to escape the appointed toil, it sets a trap for itself. The work of your hands is given you by God; do it heartily as unto Him, not merely to lay up a little more money before the night comes when no man can work. Our Master said, "I must work," and the works He did were those the Father gave Him. Strive likewise in your calling, not to heap up uncertain riches, but to serve your employers as serving Christ. If He gives you strength to labor another five years, accept it; if He sends retirement sooner, accept that also. The peace of a Christian does not hang upon winning a lottery, but upon the finished work of Jesus, in whom all needs are met.

You have asked prayer for your household, and you do well to carry your children to the throne of grace in your arms. But take heed that your hope for them rests not upon their getting better wages or a good interview, but upon their being found in Christ. A soul winning a high wage and losing its eternal inheritance has made a dreadful bargain. Plead with the Lord that He would quicken them, that they might not be content with the world’s happiness, which is a painted counterfeit, but that they might taste the water of life freely. And for your wife, this is the nearest point. You both confess the bottle makes you quarrel. Here is the path: you cannot change her heart, but the same grace that can make you sober can make her sober. Let your own walk be so close to Christ that she sees a difference. A man breathing the air of heaven is often the best sermon his wife will ever hear. Yet do not rely on your own strength, for the work is the Lord’s. He that began a good work in you will carry it on, and He can begin it in her too.

Your fear of the sweating and the shakes is understood, for fear can paralyze a man’s arm. But trust not your own resolves; a thousand vows are shattered like glass against the cannon-ball of the next temptation. There is a perseverance of the saints, but it is not a sleepy thing. It is God’s work in you, making you labor and strive. You must fight, for the Spirit’s work never lulls a man to sloth. Yet the battle belongs to the Lord, and the victory is certain for all who are truly in Christ. If the life within you is that incorruptible seed, it cannot die, for it is born of God. Look then not to the bruises and the trembling as the final horror, but to the sin that causes them. Flee to the open wounds of Jesus, who was bruised for your iniquities, and in that fountain find both cleansing from the past and power for the days ahead. The work of grace in the soul is an everlasting work, and He who began it will perfect it until the day of Christ.

You thank God for strength to remain at work when your flesh longed to flee home to drink. That is a battle won, and you give thanks rightly. But take care: you have been granted a measure of healing today, and now you must not abuse that gift by returning to the sickness. A man delivered from fever does not run back to his bed of illness once his strength returns; he guards his health and does what preserves it. So you, having tasted a day free from the grip of alcohol, must not undo the mercy by seeking the bottle again tonight. The desire to escape and drink is a despondency of soul, and like blessed Job you must school yourself against it. Job did not shine in his trials because his life was easy; he was prepared by long discipline. Therefore when ruin, bereavement, and reproach came, he did not utter rash words. You are in your own conflict: weariness at work, friction with your wife, fears for your body. Train your mind now, while the temptation is merely a wish to lie down and drink. Do not wait for the sweating, the shaking, the bruises. Those are the wages of continuing in the sickness.

You ask for a lottery to escape hard labor and provide for your children. Hear this plainly: riches do not deliver a man from misery; it is the disposition of the soul that makes one rich or poor. The rich man in the Gospel was not condemned for having wealth but for showing no pity and clinging to it as his safety. He who has large possessions yet burns with desire for more is poorer than the beggar who expects nothing. To wish for sudden, unearned wealth is to mistrust the pasture of the Good Shepherd. Christ has given you work, a means to pay your bills, a mind to complete projects. That is your pasture, where none can thrust you out if you enter by the door of thankfulness and honest labor. The Apostles went about in bonds and dangers, yet they rejoiced as though they held the whole world; they were lords of all, and no one cast them out. Their safety was not in money but in the Rock that cannot be shaken. Set your hope there, not on a lottery ticket.

For your daughter: you pray for her to get a better job and have many customers and money before her marriage. A good livelihood is not evil, but what will profit her soul if she gains the world and neglects the fear of God? Pray rather that she be pious, modest, and a despiser of ornament and excess. A mother and father must form a daughter as a combatant leaving the school for the contest: armed with virtue, ready to be as leaven in her own household. Her future marriage must be “only in the Lord,” with chastity and honor. If she seeks money first, she may find a husband, but not the blessing that comes from a marriage rooted in godliness. So with your son: you want him happy with his girlfriend and able to support himself, but happiness without the foundation of Christ is a house on sand. Instruct him in sobriety, self-command, and subjection to rule. Then, whether his pockets are full or empty, he will be rich indeed.

You plead for your wife’s heart to be softened. You both drink too much and quarrel. Here is a war in your own house, and your enemy is not flesh and blood but the passion that sets you against each other. You must be the first to lay down the weapon. She cannot reclaim you while dishonoring the marriage with drunken strife; and you cannot reclaim her by returning her harsh words. A marriage is not ended by every fault; there is hope while one still strives. But if either bids the other join in sin, the command must be refused, even if it brings temporary discord. So do not let alcohol reign in your home. Clothe yourself with a spiritual fire that makes wild beasts and snares draw back. That flame is prayer, fasting, and the love of heavenly things. When you bear that fire, the temptation to drink will find you intolerable.

You are weary and long to retire in five years. God knows your days. Jacob obtained the blessing, yet he spent his life in servitude, dangers, and fear, and at the end said, “Few and evil have my days been.” The full enjoyment of the promise awaited him in the world to come. Do not measure your life by the absence of toil. If you must work longer than you hoped, receive it as the share of your pilgrimage. The true reward is not early leisure but the crown laid up for those who persevere. Therefore, do not dream of winning a fortune; instead, wrap your mind around the desire of Heaven. Let that desire hold you fast. For the man who fears God finds no earthly thing dreadful: no surly boss, no difficult customer, no shaking hands. He steps through every danger as a lord through his own gate, because Christ has made him more secure than if he dwelt in a city of brass with walls unbreachable.

Take the day’s victory as a promise. You were helped to stay at work; you were helped not to drink. Go home and do not return to the bottle. Speak kindly to your wife, not in the heat of wine but in the calm of a sober mind. Attend to your projects, not in anxiety, but in the trust that God sees your labor. And for your children, cease to set their happiness in money and customers and easy circumstances. Pray instead that they bear good fruit: piety, modesty, contentment with little. Then they will be delivered from all vengeance, and you will find that the root being made good, the branches will flourish to your joy and their salvation.
