The notion that a soul could be born saved is a deadly error, a cobweb spun from the vanity of a slumbering conscience. You have rightly grasped that in Adam all die, every infant drawn from the womb enters this world under the sentence of condemnation, shapen in iniquity, with a nature bent to evil as the sparks fly upward. There is no such thing as a little one coming into life already washed in the blood of the Lamb apart from the regenerating work of the Spirit. To claim “I was always saved” is to deny the Scripture which declares that we were by nature children of wrath, even as others, and that except a man be born again he cannot see the kingdom of God. Those who say such things are miserably mixed up, deceived, or perhaps have never known the trembling which marks the penitent sinner. Hardened sinners sin and tremble not; penitent sinners tremble and sin not. Gracious work in the heart usually begins with trembling. I cannot believe a man has been saved if he has never trembled before God because of the evil of sin.

Salvation is not a condition we inherit with our first breath like the color of our eyes. It is the free gift of God to those who come to Jesus Christ, just as they are, and take Him to be their complete salvation. The doctrine that any are saved apart from conscious faith and repentance is a sin against all the fallen sons of Adam, for it shuts the gates of mercy by making the Cross of none effect. Where there is no repentance, there can be no remission. But where there is true repentance, that godly sorrow for sin that needs not to be repented of, there is the full and free forgiveness of all sins of the one who has thus sincerely repented. Repentance is that rainbow made of tears of grief and glances of hope at the love of Christ; it stands at His Cross, sees sin forgiven, and then repents more than ever. All are born in sin through Adam’s transgression, and from the womb we inherit death, not life. The scripture is clear: “As in Adam all die, so in Christ all are made alive.” There is no salvation without being made alive in Christ, and no one enters Christ without personal faith and repentance. Those who say they have always been saved, that salvation came with their first breath, are clinging to a carnal imagination. They seek a refuge in birth or descent, as the Jews once boasted in their forefather Abraham, but the Apostle teaches that such hope must rest in one’s own repentance and sober living. If one could be saved from birth without any action, then faith would be made void and the promise of none effect.

Consider: all have sinned and are under the curse. Faith alone justifies, and “the just shall live by faith,” not by the flesh. No one keeps the law, no infant enters the world righteous. The gospel calls for a deliberate turning, for godly sorrow that works repentance unto salvation. It is a perilous deception to imagine oneself always safe, for that shuts the door to the remedies of repentance. Do not be misled; we are not born Christians any more than we are born free of Adam’s stain. Salvation is a gift received, tasted when the heavenly calling is embraced, but never possessed without the ongoing response of a living faith. If you have never wept over your sins, never fled to Christ, never passed through the laver of regeneration by your own conscious grasp, then do not flatter yourself that you were always His. We enter this world bearing the inheritance of Adam's fall. When Adam sinned, he lost the spiritual life and the image of God in which he was created. He could not pass on something he no longer had, and so we are born with a nature that is bent toward sin. This is not just an inclination; it is a condition. We are by nature children of wrath, not because we first committed a sinful act, but because we were born in that fallen state. Being a sinner is why we sin; our sinful actions only prove the condition we already inherited from Adam. Scripture is plain that by one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and in this way death passed to all.

Because that which is born of the flesh is flesh, no one arrives in this world already in the kingdom of God. Jesus told Nicodemus that a man must be born again, and He did not make exceptions for infants or those with a religious upbringing. A spiritual birth is entirely separate from the physical one, and it requires a direct work of God that comes through a person’s looking, by faith, to Jesus Christ.

Salvation happens when someone believes that Jesus took their sin and died in their place, bearing the judgment of God against that sin. This is justification by faith, not something that occurs automatically at the first birth. You are not saved by a prayer someone else prays on your behalf, nor by a decision someone else makes for you. A person must, with living faith, look to the finished work of Christ on the cross. God made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, and by believing in Him we are made the righteousness of God. Until that faith becomes personal, the sin nature remains, and a person is still in Adam, where all die.

The claim of being always saved, from birth onward, is a misunderstanding that confuses the physical start of life with the spiritual start of life. Faith has substance and is more than words. A true, saving faith in Jesus Christ produces evidence. Being born of God means that person does not practice sin as a pattern of life. The life moves from dead works to a law of liberty where good deeds flow out of identity, not effort to be saved. You do things because you are saved, not to get saved. That new direction, that relationship of peace with God, begins at a specific point, the moment of believing, not at the cradle.

No one drifts into the new birth, nor is anyone born into it already complete. If a person is resting in the idea that they were saved since infancy without ever having consciously placed their trust in Jesus Christ and His substitutionary death, they are resting on something the Bible does not promise. The call is the same for all: you must be born again. By faith, looking at the cross where your sin was judged, you receive life. That is the only way anyone passes from death into life, and it cannot happen before a person exists to believe.
