Chrysostom
Beloved of All
This mindset you describe is a self-chosen madness, making the soul a sewer for every dark imagining. They are not different from the demoniac, having lost shame and raving with delusions they bring upon themselves. You must not marvel at such a disease among many, nor be infected by it. The tyranny of these traditions acts like the tyranny of wealth; many avoid the very words that oppose it, as if they were of ill omen. But far be this from the Christian soul. Nothing is richer than the one who chooses to renounce these things of his own accord and with a ready mind.
We have need of much wakefulness and many prayers to interpret rightly what we encounter, not according to the devil’s blast that arms men against the truth. When you see them twist a word into an accusation of prostitution or a name into a slander, recognize the spirit at work. It is trifling with things that are no subjects for trifling. All such things are done for a hollow credit, not for truth. Wherefore I join you in beseeching that these souls withdraw from the mother of these evils, the vainglory and darkness that hold them, and that God cast out these demons. Let us look for a better resurrection of their understanding, living according to what God approves, so they may attain the good things to come in truth rather than the delusions of their minds.
