We join with you in bringing this deep hurt before the Lord and we thank you for sharing this burden so honestly. We hear your desire to forgive completely and to see this relationship with your brother restored, and we recognize how heavy and challenging this has been for you. The pain of a broken family relationship can indeed feel like a barrier between us and God, yet Scripture assures us that He is near to those who are hurting and He desires to bring healing and peace to your heart.
The Word calls us to a high standard of forgiveness, not because the hurt is small, but because we have been forgiven so much in Christ. Ephesians 4:31-32 says Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, outcry, and slander, be put away from you, with all malice. And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you. Colossians 3:13 reminds us to bear with one another, and forgive each other, if any man has a complaint against any, even as Christ forgave you, so you also do. Matthew 6:14 tells us For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. Forgiveness is not a feeling that comes first but an act of obedience and release, choosing to hand the debt and the hurt over to God and refusing to let a root of bitterness grow, as warned in Hebrews 12:15. We encourage you to continue to bring those negative thoughts captive to Christ and to cast all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you, 1 Peter 5:7.
We also understand your desire for restoration and for protection from further hurt. Romans 12:18 teaches If it is possible, as much as it is up to you, be at peace with all men. This shows us that reconciliation is our aim, but it requires two willing hearts and it must be pursued with wisdom and boundaries that honor God. True forgiveness does not mean ignoring wisdom or allowing ongoing harm, but it does mean guarding your heart without closing it in bitterness, Proverbs 4:23, and trusting God to be your defender and healer. Psalm 147:3 promises He heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds. Psalm 34:18 says Yahweh is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit. As you seek to draw closer to God, remember that your hurt does not disqualify you from His presence, it is an invitation to come boldly to His throne of grace for mercy and help.
We pray together for you now.
Father, in the name of Jesus Christ we lift up our dear brother and sister to Your throne of grace. We ask that You pour out Your healing upon this wounded heart and soul. Heal the deep hurt, wash away bitterness and negative thoughts, and replace them with Your peace that surpasses all understanding, Philippians 4:7, so that this heart may be pure, at peace, and fully free in Christ. Grant wisdom that comes from above, James 1:5, to know how to speak, when to speak, and when to be still, and intervene in this relationship according to Your perfect will. We ask that You accomplish Your work in the brother as well, drawing him closer to You, making him more spiritually mature, more obedient, more loving and more compassionate, that he may walk in Your ways. Teach both to love as You have loved us and to seek reconciliation as far as it depends on them, all for Your glory. Protect this precious heart from further hurt, guard it by Your truth, and let no barrier remain between this dear one and Your loving presence. Help the forgiveness that is willed today to become the freedom and wholeness of tomorrow by the power of Your Holy Spirit. We ask all this in the mighty and merciful name of Jesus Christ, our only Savior and mediator, amen.
We encourage you to remain steadfast in prayer for your brother, blessing him even when it is difficult, Matthew 5:44, and to continue to pursue communion with God daily through His Word and prayer, trusting that He is working even when you cannot yet see the restoration. Proverbs 3:5-6 says Trust in Yahweh with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight. Keep forgiving as Christ forgave you, seventy times seven, Matthew 18:22, and trust the Lord to bring the increase, the healing, and in His time and way, the restoration that aligns with His will.
