Husband - drinking

Your pain has been heard and I join you in bringing it before the Lord with sorrow and with hope. To live for years with a husband given to drinking five days and nights a week, and to see your family being worn down by it, is a heavy burden. God sees what this addiction is doing to him and to you, and He is able to break chains that feel unbreakable.

I pray with you that the Lord will deliver your husband from this bondage, open his eyes to see clearly what he is doing to his own soul and body and to you and your family, and grant him true repentance and strength to turn away. Salvation and freedom come through Jesus Christ alone, and I ask that your husband will hear the word of God with a careful and continual heart, and that he will receive fortitude and a contempt for worldly excess that keeps him from returning to the bottle. It is not enough to be freed from one vice for a moment, we need a continual recollection of Gods word, courage, and a turning from all that entangles us, and I pray God will work all of these in him.

For you, I encourage you to remain steadfast in your covenant. Scripture teaches that the woman is bound to her husband so long as he lives, and that she should not depart from her husband but if there is a separation to remain unmarried or be reconciled. It also teaches that the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the Church, and the wife is called to submit as the Church submits to Christ, not from fear alone but willingly for her own good before the Lord. This does not mean you affirm or excuse the drinking, but it means your faithful, prayerful presence matters greatly, for the unbelieving husband is sanctified through the believing wife and every believer is called a saint through faith.

You will not win him by outward display or by harsh contention, even if your sorrow is entirely justified. What most powerfully touches a hard heart is gentleness, meekness, and propriety, a quiet and consistent life that adorns the gospel. I know this is not easy when you have endured so much, and I do not say this to irritate or burden you further, but so that you may be freed from the parade and pressure of this life and find strength in Christ. Continue in prayer, continue in hearing the word, and let your life speak of the peace you seek from God.

Let us pray together. Father in heaven, have mercy on this husband and break the power of drink over him. Bring him to see his sin and his need for Jesus, grant him a new heart that loves sobriety and truth, and give him the fortitude to walk away from what has enslaved him. Comfort this wife, guard her heart from bitterness, fill her with gentleness and wisdom, and keep this family under Your saving care. Make Your word dwell richly in this home and lead both husband and wife to live for You. In the name of Jesus we ask this, trusting that You are the Saviour of the body and the healer of broken lives.

Do not carry this alone. Seek the steady help of a faithful pastor and trusted believers in your church who can walk with you both, pray with you regularly, and help your husband find accountable support to turn from drinking. Keep bringing your request to God, for He hears and He is able to restore.

Thank you for sharing this painful burden so honestly. To watch the man you are one with choose drinking five days and nights a week for years, and to feel your family being torn apart by it, is heartbreaking. God sees what you are carrying and He hears your cry for your husband to be set free.

Scripture teaches that in marriage two become one. It is a compound unity, two persons joined into one life, reflecting the very nature of God who is one. That is why anything that breaks that oneness grieves the heart of God. Your husband's drinking is not just a private struggle, it is breaking the oneness God created, wounding him, wounding you, and wounding your family. God cares deeply about that covenant and about both of you within it.

The Bible also shows us that God is a deliverer from bondage. Just as He delivered His people out of slavery in Egypt through the sacrifice of the lamb, He now delivers His people out of the bondage of sin through Jesus, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. Addiction is a cruel form of bondage, but no chain is too strong for Christ to break. He does not only want to modify behavior, He wants to free the heart that is held captive.

That freedom comes through repentance. When Jesus welcomed sinners, the sign that something real had happened in their hearts was change and restoration. A true turning to God shows itself in a changed direction, in taking responsibility, in seeking to make right what has been broken. My prayer for your husband is not only that he would stop drinking, but that God would open his eyes to see clearly what this is doing to himself, to you, and to your family, and that he would turn to Jesus with a repentant heart that desires a new life.

I am praying for him, that the Lord would break the power of this addiction, bring him to a place of honest conviction, and lead him to the help and accountability he needs to walk in freedom. I am also praying for you. You cannot carry this alone or fix him by your own strength. Please lean on the Lord daily for wisdom and strength, and do not walk through this in isolation. Seek trusted, godly counsel and safe support around you, people who will pray with you, speak truth to you, and help you set healthy and loving boundaries. Loving your husband does not mean covering for the drinking or carrying consequences that belong to him. Sometimes the most loving thing is to let him face the reality of his choices while you remain steady in prayer and truth.

God loves you both and He is able to bring healing where there has been long hurt. Keep bringing your husband before the throne of grace, asking for deliverance, for clarity, and for a transformed heart that bears fruit in changed actions. And keep bringing your own heart to the Lord, that He would guard you with peace, give you wisdom for each step, and restore what has been broken in His time and way.

Father, in the name of Jesus we lift this husband to You. You see his bondage and the years he has been held by it. Break its power, Lord. Take away the craving and the hold it has, and awaken his heart to see the pain he is causing himself and his family. Grant him repentance and faith in Christ, the true Lamb who delivers from sin, and lead him into real change and restoration. And Father, strengthen this wife. Comfort her, protect her heart, give her wisdom, surround her with support, and help her to trust You day by day. Bring healing and oneness back to this marriage as only You can. Amen.
