Husband drinking

The misery of drunkenness is a fire that consumes not only the one who drinks but all who dwell with him. You do well to beseech the Lord, for only His mercy can break such chains. Yet while you cry out to heaven, examine your own heart: do you add fuel to his affliction with sharp words, with nagging and contempt? A wife’s bitter reproaches can drive a man deeper into his vice, whereas a gentle and quiet spirit may win him back. St. Peter knew this when he counseled wives to be subject to their husbands, that even if some do not obey the word, they may be won without a word by the conduct of their wives, when they see your respectful and pure behavior.

Pray indeed, but pray not with vexation alone. Fast, give alms, and let your own life shine as a lamp, that he may see your good deeds and give glory to God. Do not parade your affliction before neighbours or kindred, nor turn your home into a stage for quarrels. That is a spectacle more ruinous than any theatre, for it makes the marriage bed a battlefield. Let the bed be undefiled, and keep yourself chaste and faithful, for marriage is honorable and preserves the holiness of faith. Your steadfast love may yet soften his heart.

Speak to him not when he is full of wine, but in the sober light of morning, with tears rather than scolding. Remind him that his body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, and that no drunkard will inherit the kingdom of God. But above all, cast your care upon Christ. Invite the poor, the faithful, and Christ Himself into your home through prayer and charity, for where Christ is welcomed, demons flee. Do not lose hope. God is able to raise up children of Abraham from stones, and He can restore your husband to right reason. Stand firm, and may the Lord grant you peace.

The deepest anguish in what you are facing is not just the drinking itself, though that is destroying your peace. The true crisis is the soul behind the bottle. Many pray, “Lord, just make him sick every time he drinks. Make him stop.” And it is possible that he could stop drinking entirely, yet still live and die as a sober sinner, still separated from the life of God. The real enemy is sin, and the only lasting solution is a heart made new by Jesus Christ.

In your own life, the answer begins by being anchored in the one who calms the raging storms. Remember the account on the Sea of Galilee, when the terrified disciples cried out as the waves crashed over the boat. Jesus stood and simply rebuked the wind and the surging water, saying, “Peace, be still.” Instantly, the wind ceased and there was a glassy calm. That same Jesus holds authority over the chaos tearing through your home. Cry out to him for your own soul’s peace, even before you see the outward circumstances change. When you feel you cannot take another moment and want off this ride, the first step is to get right with God, to know him and love him with all your heart. The rest begins to find its order from there.

Your husband is bound in a bondage far darker than a physical craving. Just as the Passover once remembered deliverance from Egypt through the blood of a lamb, we now look to the Lamb of God whose sacrifice takes away the sin of the world. Your deepest prayer must be for his deliverance from sin’s grip through that sacrifice. That is the true miracle to seek.

The covenant of your marriage holds weighty significance. Scripture teaches that husband and wife have a mutual belonging, and what God has joined is not to be torn apart lightly. Your faithfulness in this storm is a profound testimony, and your prayer is a sacred calling, not a last resort. Yet do not place the entire weight of your life’s joy on his change alone. Though prophecy rolls forward and certain trials must come, your soul can stand on the immovable rock. Seek God’s face for your own strengthening. The peace that Jesus speaks is not dependent on whether the other person in the boat with you changes; it comes from knowing that the one who commands the waves is with you now. He will hold you steady, and he alone can reach a heart no one else can touch.

We want you to know how deeply we have carried your heart before the Lord these past days. It has been our privilege to stand in agreement with you, lifting your husband before our Heavenly Father and asking Him to break the chains of addiction that have taken hold. We have prayed for healing—not just for his body and mind, but for the restoration of your marriage, your peace, and your hope. The weight of this struggle is heavy, and we have asked God to surround you with His comfort and strength as you walk through this valley.

If the Lord has moved in answer to these prayers—if you’ve seen even a glimmer of change, a softening of his heart, or a moment of sobriety—we would be overjoyed to hear your praise report. Your testimony could be a beacon of hope to others walking this same path. But if the battle still rages on, if the nights still feel long and the burden still feels unbearable, please don’t hesitate to post this request again. We are not finished praying. We will continue to intercede, believing that God is at work even when we cannot see it.

Remember, dear sister, that you are not alone. The same God who parted the Red Sea, who raised Jesus from the dead, is fighting for you and your husband. He sees your tears, He hears your cries, and He is able to do immeasurably more than we could ever ask or imagine. Keep seeking Him, keep trusting Him, and know that we are standing with you in this.

May the Lord bless you with His peace that surpasses all understanding, and may He draw your husband closer to His heart with each passing day. We pray all these things in the powerful name of Jesus. Amen.
