Husband drinking

Animalgirl

Humble Servant of All
Lord, please stop my husband from drinking and being lazy. Please make him change his life.

We hear your heartfelt cry for your husband, and we join you in lifting this burden before the Lord. The struggles you describe, drunkenness and laziness, are not only destructive to him but also to the marriage covenant you both entered before God. Scripture is clear that these behaviors grieve the Holy Spirit and dishonor the body, which is the temple of God (1 Corinthians 6:19-20). The Bible warns, "Do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit" (Ephesians 5:18). Laziness, too, is condemned as it leads to poverty of spirit and provision (Proverbs 6:6-11, 2 Thessalonians 3:10).

First, we must address this with truth and love. Your husband’s drinking is not just a habit, it is bondage, and bondage requires deliverance. Jesus came to set the captives free (Luke 4:18), and we declare that freedom over him in the mighty name of Jesus Christ. But we must also acknowledge that change requires repentance, a turning away from sin and a turning toward God. We pray that the Holy Spirit would convict him deeply, not with condemnation, but with the loving correction of a Father who desires his restoration (Hebrews 12:6).

We also recognize that your role as his wife is one of respect and submission, as Scripture instructs (Ephesians 5:22-24, 33). However, submission does not mean silence in the face of sin. You are called to speak the truth in love (Ephesians 4:15) and to pray fervently for your husband’s transformation. Have you considered gently but firmly addressing these issues with him, perhaps with the support of a pastor or trusted Christian counselor? Sometimes, godly accountability is the tool the Lord uses to break chains.

Let us pray together:

"Heavenly Father, we come before You with heavy hearts, lifting up this marriage and this husband who is bound by the chains of drunkenness and laziness. Lord, we know that no sin is too great for Your grace, and no bondage is too strong for Your power. We ask that You would break the hold of alcohol over him, that You would remove the desire for it from his heart, and replace it with a hunger and thirst for righteousness (Matthew 5:6). Father, awaken in him a diligence and purpose that comes only from You. Let him rise up as the spiritual leader of his home, as You intended (Ephesians 5:23).

We rebuke the spirit of addiction and sloth in Jesus’ name, and we command it to leave him now. Fill him instead with Your Holy Spirit, that he may walk in the newness of life (Romans 6:4). Lord, soften his heart to receive Your correction and give him the courage to turn away from these sins. Surround him with godly men who can encourage and hold him accountable. Strengthen this wife as she stands in faith, praying and believing for his transformation. May their marriage be restored and reflect Your love and holiness.

We ask all these things in the powerful name of Jesus Christ, the name above every name, the only name by which we are saved and set free (Acts 4:12). Amen."

We encourage you to continue standing in faith, even when the situation seems hopeless. God is able to do immeasurably more than we ask or imagine (Ephesians 3:20). Consider fasting and praying for your husband, as this can be a powerful tool in spiritual warfare (Mark 9:29). And remember, your prayers are not in vain, they are a fragrant offering before the Lord (Revelation 5:8).

If your husband does not yet know Jesus as his Lord and Savior, this is the first and most critical step. Without Christ, true and lasting change is impossible. Share the gospel with him in love, and pray that he would surrender his life to Jesus. The Bible says, "If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come" (2 Corinthians 5:17). This is the transformation we are believing for!

We hear the ache behind your brief cry, living with a husband who drinks and neglects his life is draining in ways that are hard to put into words. The weight of hoping for change day after day while nothing shifts can leave you feeling invisible and worn. We want you to know we don’t take your request lightly.

Lasting change rarely comes in a single dramatic moment; it often requires steady steps and outside help. Your husband may need more than a firm resolve, he may need professional addiction support, a Christian recovery group like Celebrate Recovery, or the accountability of caring people in your church. Meanwhile, you need support too, so this burden doesn’t crush your spirit alone. Would you consider confiding in a trusted pastor or a counselor who understands addiction? They can help you figure out how to love your husband without enabling, and how to guard your own heart while you wait and pray.

We are asking God to do what only He can do in your husband’s heart, but we also ask Him to give you clarity and the strength to take wise next steps. You don’t have to carry this by yourself.

Jesus, you see this wife’s longing and her exhaustion. Please break the grip of alcohol that holds her husband, and awaken him to the damage it causes. Surround her with steady, godly people who will walk with her. Protect her from despair and fill her with your peace that quietly guards her heart and mind. In your name, Jesus, we pray. Amen.

Your cry rises to the throne of grace, but let us look beyond the outward misery to the inward malady. The drinking and the sloth are the foul streams, yet the fountain is a heart at enmity with God, a soul that has not known repentance unto life. A man may be stopped from his cups by fear or by force, and you would call that a blessing, yet what if he remain a stranger to the cross, unwashed in the precious blood, and his nature unchanged? The swine that was washed might return to wallowing in the mire, for the swinish nature is still there. It is not a sobered sinner that will serve the Lord, but a Saviour’d sinner, a man made new by the Spirit of God.

True repentance is no mere sorrow for consequences, no transient resolution born of shame or dread. That is a repentance of the flesh, which leaves the heart a palace swept and garnished for seven worse devils. Saving repentance is worked by the goodness of God, who leads us by His long-suffering to see sin as rebellion against infinite love. When the Holy Spirit comes, He makes the knees bend at the cross, and the soul weeps, not chiefly because the bottle has brought ruin, but because sin has pierced the Lord who bought him. Until your husband beholds Christ crucified for him, and until the love of God melts his hard heart, you may bind his hands from the drink for a season, but you shall not bind his will to love righteousness.

Pray on, dear soul, but let your prayer climb higher. Ask not first that he be made decent, but that he be made a new creature in Christ Jesus. Beseech the Lord to remove the heart of stone and give a heart of flesh. Cry that repentance and remission of sins be granted to him in the name of Jesus, for these are the two rings of the golden chain that draws a soul to glory. The husband who is merely dried up from drink and driven to industry may yet walk the broad road to perdition, respectable in outward appearance but unreconciled to God. The husband who falls at the feet of Jesus, confessing his sin and trusting the Saviour, will leave his cups because a new Master rules within.

And for yourself, remember that the Lord is a Husband to His people. When earthly husbands fail, when they are cruel or careless, when they are drinking and lazy, the faithful God draws near to the wife who trusts in Him. He communed with Israel as a husband, providing, cherishing, and enduring their waywardness. Cast your burden upon Him, and let His goodness lead you, too, to a deeper repentance for any root of bitterness or despair that has sprung up in your own heart. A quiet and gentle spirit, resting upon the promises, shines with a light that may yet win the erring one.

Seek his conversion, not merely his reformation. Look for that transformation which the Lord alone can work, turning the crooked thing straight, making darkness into light before the stumbling feet. This miracle He delights to perform, and He often answers such prayers in a time of unexpected grace. Only keep Jesus at the centre of your supplications, for it is in His name and through His wounds that the chief of sinners finds a full remission and a new life that will never die.

May God in Jesus' name answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. God is so in love with you. Be Encouraged!

Psalm 37:4: Delight yourself in the Lord, And He shall give you the desires of your heart.
Matthew 6:33: But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.
